I think it was a really sweet little detail that anytime Mariano was in a scene he didn't just have stupid googoo eyes for Isabella. He noticed when Mirabel was under the table. It really felt like he wanted to be a brother to her and a part of the family. As someone who was frequently just ignored it was something of a comfort that Mariano was going to be a nice addition to the family regardless of which side he married into.

Again Sean is so good at noticing things! I don't think any reactor I've seen so far has caught that Abuela picked the white flower from Isabella's hair because it didn't match the pink ones so it didn't look "perfect".

I actually saw an article today where the journalist said that it was an overhyped, "meh" movie -- she said it was too plotless because it didn't have a specific villain, that there were too many useless characters, and she preferred the regular 1-3 main characters, and that the whole thing was absolutely nothing new. And I thought, when have any of our stories EVER been "new"? We humans tell the same kinds of stories over and over because they're OUR stories. They're what we relate to. _Any_ and _every_ person who watches this can relate to something different in it. That's the *_power_* of having like _12_ main characters, and a simple but _meaningful_ story about generational trauma. Either that journalist straight up didn't HAVE a family, or she currently has NO imagination or empathy 😂

Strong believer that Mirabel had the gift of Empathy the entire time. I also liked that Isabela and Mariano looked like Abuela and Abuelo, Which was why Abuela was so intent on Isabela having the perfect life with him. She was trying to recreate their story with a happy ending.

Sean would turn around and say: Y'all were ignoring me before? Now look, forget a room, I got a whole HOUSE. Y'all are renting rooms!

Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did. He was ready to take the blame for the house breaking so Mirabel doesn't turn into him He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.

Quick notes for the movie! The Madrigals get their gifts when they are 5. Bruno has been in the walls for 10 years. All of the Madrigals have images on their outfits that pertain to their gifts. Abuela was so scared of losing her home, her life, again she lost sight of the fact that the miracle was for the family. She went from losing her home, to watching her husband get murdered, to having to lead a town while raising three kids on her own. She never had a chance to process her grief and trauma so she ended up unintentionally passing on the fear of losing everything because they weren't enough to her kids and then their kids. It's generational trauma. Love this movie for tackling big issues in a hopeful way.

I can’t think of any Disney movie without a villain tbh. This one was purely about family and I loved it. Such a simple premise and setting for a movie but it was perfectly done. The music is so killer too, my favorite music from any Disney musical EVER. I live the contemporary feel they’ve added by using Lin Manuel Miranda.

A little hidden gem for everyone , when Dolores ( the one with the hearing gift) sings about Bruno.... you see him in the second level sneaking and dancing in the background . 😁

okay but the thing about Dolores is how was she able to hide the fact that her uncle who everyone has avoided talking about, was living in the walls for years but couldn't keep shut about a future prediction that may or may not have been true

The candle choose Mirabel to be the protecgor of the magic, her door is the door for the entire house

I have a theory that sweet little Antonio is spying on Maribel like he sent the toucan in Bruno’s room told the raccoon things to put the vision together and used the rats to follow her into the walls

I'm still horrified by the sight of abuelo Pedro getting cut down by the machete in shadow. Also, Luisa's song was fire, Dolores was adorable and we need to get Bruno into counselling. The poor thing was still self-blaming and apologising in the end.

I was the SAME WAY about Dolores. When I heard her sing her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno, I fell in love. Hers was the BEST part, closely followed by Camilo's part. Pepa and Felix's part was very cute though but Dolores wins. Best song for me is Surface Pressure. Related to it on so many levels and Luisa brought sexy back with the whole thing. Man, this movie is AMAZING.

Isabella is 20 and was about to get married yet grandma says that she's out of control as if she's 4.

I believe that Mirabell's gift is being the matriarch of the family, take over when Abuela passes since her gift was also being the matriarch

The reconciliation scene made me cry. It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family.

I’d like to throw in the theory that Maribel‘s gift is talking to Casita. The only other character in the movie who actively talks to Casita is Abuela, who also doesn’t have a gift since she’s the keeper of the candle, so Maribel is like her successor! So basically: Maribel is the keeper of the magic and Casita‘s friend :)

I see Encanto as a commentary on ableism - Mirabel is excluded because she doesn’t have the same abilities as everyone else, but she is still an integral part of the family and has her own talents outside of the magic. (Her outfit has little features from everyone else - dumbbells for Luisa, flowers for Isabella, etc). I love that they didn’t give her a gift at the end because the family has learned to appreciate her for being herself, and she doesn’t need to be “fixed.” Loved your commentary, I’m glad you liked the movie!

To raise 3 kids and be a leader Abuela had to put her grief aside. The needed to be strong and focused in her purpose so she couldn't let herself be relaxed and soft.

You should definitely check out the Netflix show "Arcane". It's AWESOME. 10/10 for everything: soundtrack, characters and their development, the voice acting, the animation and the storyline 😍😅😂

Abuela Alma is the antagonist, but that doesn't mean she is the villain. She got too caught up in protecting the miracle that she lost her way with the family, to the point where the family aren't happy with their roles. Mirabel's gift was being able to get the family back together. She is the glue.

Abuela had her own trauma, imagine losing her husband with 3 kids and be responsible for the entire village 🥺 Abuela did everything she thought was best for everybody but well it didn’t work out but she ain’t a villain.

Mirabelles gift is the same as abuela- the guardian of the family/ ruler. It makes more sense how she understands the casita compared to the others

Mirabel doesn't have a gift or a door. You can consider her abilities a "gift" but not in the same way they have gifts. I believe she's what you would call the anchor. She grounds the family by balancing them out since they all have magic. She's the normal one that keeps them humbled. And while they're all "special" to most normal people, she's the only normal one which makes her the special one of the family. (Aside from the dads but I guess there's no pressure on them. lol

There is sop much to unpack here but i will go with Mirabel her gift was to have no gift everyone was petrified of grandma she told them what she wanted the gifts to do so they were trapped. if Mirabel had a gift grandma would have got her claws in this is why Mirabel could see what was happening emotionally this is what i saw in it lol

Miracle helps her family to see their worth doesn't lay inside their gifts, just special for who they are.

I think Mirabel is like her grandmother, she can talk to the house and is the Heart of the house, she will be in charge of the next generations and that why her door is the house one

Very impressed by your reasoning and deductive skills. You keep looking for Mirabel's powers a bit much though. :P The most important part of this movie and the main message is you don't need a magical Gift to be special. It would have been a major disappointment if Mirabel got magical powers at any point in the movie. Mirabel is a genuinely good and caring person that helps everyone in the family, that's already more than enough. She might be the inheritor of the magic as a whole, a successor to Abela, a predominating theory online and one I think is highly plausible. So in a way she has magic, but not in a direct way.
