There is a famous Leonard Nimoy story about him being in a restaurant and the waitress asked him. Yeah, they made quite a few edits along with the dropped F bombs when they decided they wanted the movie to come in with a PG rating instead of an R rating. Like all the drug references. That’s why Tony Shalhoub’s character is so laid back. He’s supposed to be stoned the whole time. They thought it’d be hilarious if they’re “Scotty” instead of reacting with the typical (add in the Scottish accent.) “I CAN’T GIVE ER ANYMORE CAPTAIN!! IF I PUSH ER ANYMORE SHE’LL TEAR THE SHIP APART!!”, they’d get the stoner’s “Hey guys. They’re…telling me…the ship can’t take it…ship’s breaking apart…just FYI, ya know”. 😂🥹

A great homage to our beloved series. Lenard Nemoy often wore the Spock ears around his home to find the character. Which he eventually nailed. Sigourney Weaver's line about there always being ducts is a reference to the Alien franchise. The we work together or not at all is a reference to the animated series. When the racist studio didn't want Nichelle Nichols or the other none white actors to voice their characters. Their friends and costars told the studio if they aren't welcomed then no one will do the show. Sam Rockwell is fantastic as the "Red Shirt" representative.

@@bunnytailsREACTS That's quite interesting. The concept of "comic relief" in a tragedy is well known, but there seems to be no term for the opposite effect: that is, I have been unable to find a phrase referring to a tragic moment in a work of comedy. It's less common, of course, but it does sometimes happen (as in Galaxy Quest), but several sources state that there is no antonym for "comic relief" and no phrase even discussing the idea of a tragic moment in a comedy.
@T.Florenz
@T.Florenz День назад
@@user-ec5bo8tx4n I think there's a theory of comedy, that it has to be rooted in deep pathos for the characters and high-stakes in their world. Like, think of the premise of Mrs. Doubtfire -- there's nothing inherently comedic in the idea of a man potentially losing his whole family. Galaxy Quest is a story about bitter, disillusioned actors feeling used and discarded in their industry and an alien civilization facing extermination. Both of these premises need to be played with absolute sincerity to work comedically. So that may be why. But I do agree that we should have a word for it!
@JohnD-scaledecks
@JohnD-scaledecks 4 дня назад
If you think about it, this is the same premise as "A Piece of the Action," but instead of the Iotians with the Gangster book it"s the Thermians and the TV episodes forming the basis of their society. This came out during the production 9f ST:TNG and the cast was hesitant t9 see it at first fearing it mocked them, but came to realize it was a tribute to Star Trek - and it's fans. The whole, "I'm not going to say that stupid line." actually has some basis in reality. After Star Trek ended, Leonard Nimoy felt that being in Star Trek hurt his acting career and said he was never going to say, "Live long and prosper." ever again. A few years went by and one of the first Star Trek conventions happened. Leonard did not go but a couple Star Trek alumni did. After the convention they contacted him and told him he really needed to attend one. He reluctantly agreed and went to the next one he could attend. While there he met fan after fan telling him how much his character Mr. Spock meant to them and one fan even said they were thinking of unaliveing themselves but hearing Spock say, "Live long and Prosper." caused them to stop. Also, many fans over the years told him that they decided to go into science because of Mr. Spock. Needless to say, Leonard did not have any problems saying, "That stupid line." after that.

Bunny, I think you have the _ideal_ outfit for your first viewing of this movie. The best kind of satire is one that fans of the _franchise_ will appreciate.

1:23 Just to illustrate my point, somewhere along the line, _Star Trek_ began to prefer for its Klingons actors from the _Shakespearean_ fold. I think this guy is here to acknowledge that fact.

This is certainly one of the best Trek movies. And it's so meta-science-fiction as it speculates about what happened on Sigma Iotia II after Bela Oxmyx and his goons figured out how the transtator in McCoy's forgotten communicator works. 😉

Love this film! Hey Bunny, the Thermian walk - when we walk, leg forward/opposite arm back, leg back, opposite arm forward. When they walk, it's leg forward/same side arm forward, leg back/same side arm back- it's counter intuitive. Basically, your arm on each side follows each leg on the same side (or leg follows arm on same side - same thing). Walking that way is tough enough, but running like that like they were in some scenes, well, that's why it's so funny, because it looks very odd and hard to do without screwing up even falling over! They actually had "Thermian School" where the actors playing them were taught how to walk and talk and otherwise be a Thermian, by actor Enrico Colantoni (Mathezar), who invented it all on his own.

It's great how you almost instantly expressed the theme of this one; yes, these shows have a bit of corn to them, but there is absolutely a significance and depth to them. They are inspiring, enlightening and even life changing. So wonderful to see the crew finally understand their show was more than just geek references and laser guns and cool outfits. It was about what it is to be human, about conveying that human experience and understanding it. The film has a perfect mix of humor and drama that is very, very rare. It's poking fun at the genre but also doing it with obvious GREAT love. One of the very few "modern classics" IMO. Now, you gotta work on a famous one-liner...!

They probably ended up not only with the show, but insanely rich as the govt could use the ship, reverse engineering it for space and domestic tech. The space travel/energy capabilities from that ship would be a quantum leap foward

I enjoy imagining that the Thermians are a tribute to the Iotians, those "very imitative" aliens who took that one book and based a whole Chicago gangster civilization on it in that episode A Piece of the Action. You have just seen one of the better Star Trek movies ever made, even if it's not canon. Thanks!

More Star Trek than Star Trek, is what tv show The Orville was called when it started around 2018. Many trekkies had problems with Star Trek Discovery and so The Orville was much liked. Seth McFarlane made the show with this intent. Its not a spoof, by the way.

The Orville was great and I do feel like it captured the essence of classic Star Trek in a way that some of the more modern Treks have not.

In addition to the major names you mentioned, superfan Brandon was played by a very young Justin Long; Fred was played by Tony Shalhoub (Monk); and one of the Thermians was played by Rainn Wilson (Dwight from the Office).

This great SNL "Get a life!" sketch aired December 20, 1986, with Shatner hosting. Robert Smigel wrote it, with contributions from future Simpsons writers Jon Vitti and George Meyer. Smigel, a long-time collaborator with Conan O'Brien, is known for Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and The Ambiguously Gay Duo. Also, Da Bearsss!

This is how Star Trek went from being a tv show to something more because fans began asking questions about stuff that the writers only intended for the episode that it appeared in, fans made it the Star Trek Universe. Sadly this is also reflective of the real disconnect between actors of Star Trek how actors would before filming scenes would edit scripts taking lines intended for other actors, William Shatner did this a lot so much that when he was given the director's chair for Star Trek V actor Geoge Takei was reluctant to apprise his role as Sulu. This "hammer" parallels not just Leonard Nimoy who was only known as Spock despite playing other characters in other shows but reflects actors being type cast by studios themselves.

Lovely to see a new fan's reaction to this as a fan. The "By Grapthar's hammer" catch phrase was reference to Spock's "live long, and prosper.". In the last season of Star Trek they wanted to exploit fans by selling a medallion they wanted Spock to start wearing. He wore it once. It was called an IDIC. I won't even mention the corny catch phrase that represented.
