The scene with Jaime and Brienne in the baths is one of my favorite moments in Game of Thrones. A lot of people weren't as perceptive as you guys, and it wasn't until this scene that they realized that there was actually another side to Jaime, something he was hiding behind all that bluff and bluster. Ironically, Tywin speaks to exactly this the first time we see him on screen, talking with Jaime in the tent while butchering a deer: Tywin: "You spend too much time worrying about what other people think of you." Jaime: "I could care less what anyone thinks of me." Tywin: "That's what you want people to think of you."

Right… it would have hit even harder I think if Jamie hadn’t been such an ass for the much of the first season lol. Like if you act like a arrogant self-absorbed dick literally making jokes about someone’s father and brother being burned alive screaming, and don’t bother explaining the details of the circumstances that led to killing the mad king then it’s like OF COURSE people are gonna think of him as an unhonorable arrogant dick lol. It’s like yes I know he is misunderstood to a degree (by Ned stark etc) but he is directly responsible for being misunderstood by the way he acts and the fact that he didn’t even bother trying to explain himself when stark found him on the throne. But this scene was still a great moment, kinda makes me a bit disappointed with him (even prior to S8 which just left me disappointed period lol)

Jaime's always reminded me of the classic depiction of a conflicted man with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. You've already noticed that when he's around Brienne, a very honorable woman, he tends to try and behave with more chivalry, like defending her from would-be rapists (at the cost of his hand, as it turned out). When he was young, HE wanted to be that honorable knight that unerringly did the right thing, like Brienne, and when he sees her, he remembers how he used to be and how he wanted to be. Then he has Cersei on the other shoulder, his devil, the person who can get him to do unspeakable things "for love". She knows just how to twist him around and get him to do the evil things she wants to do but, as woman, can't always accomplish on her own.

One thing thats really fun to do after seeing the scene where Jaime finally comes clean about his struggles is to go back and watch his interactions with Robert and Ned back in season 1. The way he has such a distant look on his face when Robert asks him about how the Mad King died, how hurt he looks when he tries to explain why he did it to Ned and then Ned assumes he's lying and throws it back in his face. It puts it all into context and it fits so well

@@J0ECRAWF15H You have freedom of speech. Vsgue comments and cheeky remarks is in regards to spoilers and spoilers only. A lot of people end up revealing information or events in shows by trying to slyly make remarks that aren't blatant but are still revealing enough to heavily hint at what the actual spoiler is. This ruins the reactions, it ruins the experience for S&P, it ruins the experience for those watching reactions. I think you are confused by what freedom of speech actually means. You can literally talk about ANYTHING you want here that isn't blatant hate speech or spoilers. That includes insulting the reactors. We cannot have people ruining the reaxfiins by spoiling things, this seems pretty common sense to me and I am unsure why anyone that is enjoying this content would try to justify others ruining it. If these rules are unreasonable to you, then that's your perogative, but they aren't going anywhere, and 30,000 people seem to be able to follow them without issue. 90% of reactors don't read the youtube comments because of spoilers. I loved how we got to see that the reason behind Jamie’s ultimate betrayal was actually honourable all along! It’s such an in depth dive into the character arch, not to mention the acting and the music made this scene one of the most memorable and vital moments. We can also see the change in the reflection in Brienne’’s eyes listening to him open up to her about what actually happened with the mad king. I truly can’t praise this scene enough! - I also would like to add that this scene highlighted how Ned’s loyalty was always blind!
@erikperhs_
@erikperhs_ Год назад
What's crazy is that we ALWAYS knew his reasons were honourable. Since the first time they say he killed the mad king, we could have realized "oh, if the king was mad, it's good that Jamie killed him", but the show has a way of making us see him as everyone else sees him.
@rafetizer
@rafetizer Год назад
@@erikperhs_ It's an interesting look at the limitations of the honor code. Ned was blinded to the practicality of Jaime's actions because they don't line up with his own. Ned would have confronted the mad king, and probably would have been burned alive for it. He never would have had the chance to resign and leave like he did with Robert. (not that one can legally resign a kingsguard position, but you know what I mean) But because of his strict honor, he just can't get past the fact that Jaime killed the king. Regarding the OP: I'm not sure I'd give Jaime complete credit for honor here, because the mad king basically wanted to destroy the entire city. With those stakes, it just makes sense to try and stop the guy. Completely discounting honorable intention, if Jaime let's the mad king burn everyone, he's basically destroying everything that keeps their rule going. That being said, I will agree that Jaime has some level of honor. His father and sister do their best to stamp it out of him, so he's an asshole most of the time. I would say his motivation for sticking the mad king was due to both honor and practicality. (also, the king instructed him to arrest or kill his own dad, so he probably didn't feel too secure himself)
@hokagedlo6133
@hokagedlo6133 Год назад
Honor isn't about what's right or wrong morally. Honor is a code of conduct, Jamie is a man without honor he betrayed his oath and his king that's unforgivable. Yes his reasons were morally justified, but that's not his call to make he was sworn to protect Aerys he swore to the seven, to his house and country, and he ended up betraying them all. Keep in mind this is the same dude who threw a child out of a window, to hide his secret incestuous relationship with the queen of his current king which means he's once again breaking his oaths and y'all are trying to tell me the father of the queens bastard children is honorable 😂. Honor and morals are not the same regardless he has neither.

Until this point, he was very much a villain but then George R R Martin introduced his POV and it changed everything... getting to see a bit of what's going on in his head and getting his backstory makes you realize that he has done some awful things but that he is not a horrible person... Terrible position he was in: 15 years old appointed to the kingsguard for life (big pressure and expectations) spending 2 years under the rule of a mad king, and being left alone with him at 17 and having to decide if he should obey the king and keep to his vows or save thousands of people... "So many vows...they make you swear and swear." "No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or the other.” - Jaime Lannister

What they don’t really go into the show, is Brienne is THE honorable knight. She is the honor by which all honor should be judged and Jaime not only sees his young self in her (bc in the books she’s 18 and he’s 34) and she’s the person he aspired to be before the realities of the world turned him jaded, but he hates that *SHE* judges him bc she’s the most honorable person he’s ever met, even more than Ned Stark and he hates that she sees him as the Kingslayer. And what’s beautiful is yeah in the show he casually told Robert what Aerys said, he casually mentions it to a few other people, but in the books she’s the ONLY person he ever tells, she’s the ONLY person he trusts with this information because she’s the only person he trusts that won’t do anything with the knowledge that KL is still littered with wildfire. Not Tyrion, not Ned, not his father, definitely not Cersei… It’s only Brienne Also in the books he sees her naked and it’s an immediate *salute* on his part that he’s like ‘whoa Wtf is that, I can’t feel that for her’

It's a complicated situation, it was an honorable act but it does make you see the other point of view.

Jamie always put his life on the line to end conflict. He challenged Ned to let go of Tyrion, so all these wars would not start. He charged towards Rob and challenged him 1on1 to end the war. The Stark would rather have wars and deaths because they are so blind to the idea of honorable and justice.
@Mrryn
@Mrryn Год назад
@@ng.benjamin "Always putting his life on the line to end conflict" shows you missed the point of the first comment. He did it when the Mad King was about to nuke the city, sure, and tried to seek out 1v1s to prevent the oncoming war and to end it. But if you look at it as though that was Jaime's only or even his primary motive, that's incredibly foolish and borderline just stanning the character. Notice how every instance named also involves his family...Aerys about to burn them all which included Jaime's father Tywin, dueling Ned for the release of his brother Tyrion, fighting a 1v1 with Robb to end the war with a Lannister victory...everything was for his family, first and foremost, with it being an "honorable/self-sacrificial" act secondary if it was even intentional. Like the original comment said, if it was really about honor and "putting his life on the line to end conflict," what stopped Jaime from doing so when he saw Rickard Stark being burned to death in a mockery of trial by combat while Brandon Stark was tortured, forced to watch and strangulating himself trying to reach a sword out of reach to cut his father's binds and save him? And that being just one notable instance of the Mad King's cruelty...one that he uses the excuse that no one else acted either to justify his own inaction, but it didn't stop him from acting later when his own family was threatened. That's the point, Jaime was hardly some selfless character that you paint his actions as being - he was driven by love for his family, has some sense of respect and honor that has survived how jaded he became under Aerys, but he moreso vicious and enacting and self-serving at this point in the story. He has tinges of gray to his character, not white, that make him intriguing, and makes his self-reflection once at rock bottom ripe for future growth.

@@ng.benjamin Jaime challenging senior citizen Ned or a literally child Robb isn't one of his good acts. He is THE best swordsman of his time at the prime of his youth he knew he'd kill both of them. Remember what Robb said, Jaime would win if they did it his way. Jaime is complex character and one of my favorites but he is comfortable with doing terrible and dishonorable acts for his family or his own selfish reasons. It isn't until he meets Brienne that he gets that awakening again and gets reminded of his ideals. It's a disservice to his character to reduce him to "He's always been perfect and good but no one listened 🥺" He is much more than that his good and bad actions always have multiple reasons that create complexity. I was trying to show the POV of Ned Stark and he's right. Brienne sees Jaime in a different light now and she is also right. Tell this to Barristan Selmy and he would probably have a reaction in the middle which is also valid. Jaime isn't confined to this or that. He's all of them and none of them. My 13 year old nephew when Thoros is telling Arya that he has revived Beric 6 times: "Why would the Lord of Light choose someone who keeps getting his ass kicked?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I died. More serious. I love Jamie telling his king slayer story. I didn't notice at 1st, But that is a decent parallel to Katlyn Stark telling her story of praying that baby John Snow would die. The world looked at her as this strong motherly honorable woman. And they looked at Jamie as a POS king slayer. But their back stories both tell the opposite story.

What you said about Loras Tyrell and the man who works with Little Finger “Poor Renly, that didn’t take long”, is something that bothers me too. Most of all because they had a scene where they showed him still mourning Renly which then makes the scenes that were kept in feel more like an expression of grief, but it was cut for time.

One big thing to keep your eyes on is the parallel development of Ned’s sons and daughters. On this particular episode, specially, the parallelism between Jon and Rob. Jon breaks his oaths and dogmas in pragmatic ways, never losing sight of his ulterior honorable goal (shielding the world of men)… whereas Rob breaks his oaths, promises and commitments in search of personal (egotistic) goals: personal love, for ex. This shows that some are more of Ned’s children than others… metaphorically speaking ;) In that, also, some show a lack of wisdom in learning from Ned’s mistakes.
@nicoterradas

On this same line, Jamie and Brienne’s conversation also sheds light on this theme or moral of the episode. IMHO

Ned was a protector of children: He tried to protect Dany from Robert, he tried to protect Cersei’s kids from Robert by warning her, and he tried to protect his kids by “admitting” treason at his end. Ned would be proud of Rob for bringing justice to lord Karstark for murdering children even his enemy’s children.

I always feel like Jaime has some sort of lifelong stockholme syndrome with Cersei. Like from as far back as when they were children Cersei clearly dominated their relationship and when it became inappropriate she was still in charge and he became nearly subserviant and developed a kind of obsessive infatuation with her. When he's around her he is her man and a horrible person. When he's away from her and doing her bidding or thinking of returning to her he is a horrible person but when someone breaks through the psychological hold she has on him and finds the real Jaime beneath he is a much better person. You just need to keep him from being around or thinking about his sister.

He wants someone to judge him fairly. The voice you heard was female. It was an instruction to the leader "Remove your helmet" Dany wants to see the face of the commander who will lead her soldiers.

Dont know if you remember but in the first season when Ned Stark was the hand of the king, he orders lord Beric Dondarrion to gather 100 men and to bring the Mountain to justice for attacking villages in the riverlands and summons Tywin Lannister to answer for the crimes of his bannermen. Thats how the war between the Starks and the Lannisters realy begins. Beric gets ambushed and killed by the Mountain and then Thoros of Myr revives him for the first time. Thoros of Myr is also mentioned in season one by Jaime Lannister when talking to Jory Cassel, Ned Starks guard who is killed by Jaime Lannister with a knife in an eye. Thoros is mentioned as the first man in the breach in the siege of Pyke just like in the story between Jorah and Baristan in this episode.

Hi, quick note: Eric Dondarrion, the guy who was resurrected in the cave after his battle with the Hound, said he was killed by the Mountain. Eric is the character who Ned Stark sent out when Ned sat on the Iron Throne while Robert was hunting. Ned learned from the citizens present that the Mountain killed the villages and Ned then sen Eric with "100 men" to bring justice to the false knight Gregor Cligane (Mountain). Ned then ordered Twyin to appear in court. Erik when with the 100 men but while out, both Ned and Robert died. So the 100 men had no banners to follow and became the "Brotherhood without banners". Cool backstory!

This ep is a great example of a very satisfying series of twists in character development. There weren’t twists for the sake of shock value- this episode shows twists and character development can drastically change, but feel real and complex because it builds up over time. In this way, it’s satisfying emotionally for the viewer when the shift happens. It’s not about shock for the sake of shock- but a natural evolution in our understanding of the character which has meaning because of all we’ve encountered with them prior to those pivotal moments.

I had been missing this channel for a while due to work. Glad to be back checking out your perspective on things. Always so entertaining! I am going to brag for a moment. I got to see that cave where Jon and Igrit went and had their first tryst. I was in Iceland and was able to pop my head in seeing that and then a few other Knights watch shoot locations. It was amazing. I encourage anyone who can - go to Iceland and take a GOT tour. Go to Iceland in general. It's a magical place. Back to the show commentary... The contrast between Rob wielding the sword and chopping off the head of Karstark in one go VS Theon's mishap last season, it was really telling. I am really pained for Arya too. Her path at such a young age- that is an imprint you can't shake. It changes you to the core. The bath scene with Jamie and Brienne is so deep to see why Jamie is the way he is and shows a vulnerability we had never seen. He shows it to Brienne. That says a lot about their relationship at this point. You saw him regard her womanhood too when she stood up. Tyrion and Sansa is her best bet at this point considering all who are present now. It's a good deal actually. Going to watch your episode 6 now.
