Honestly, this movie was really good. I've had time to sit down and reflect on it, and I really, really enjoyed it! It's so much better thinking back on the events once you know the truth about Crouch Jr./Moody. I feel like this movie needs a second watch through just to enjoy the little things that are missed like Crouch Jr. torturing the spider in front of Neville, his glee at using the curses and not having any repercussions, and also Barty Crouch Sr.'s reaction when he sees Moody do the tongue thing. I'm glad I get to watch the movie a second time while I'm editing, I pick up so many things I missed!! Does this movie rank in your top 3? So far for me it does for sure! Actually this ranks in my bottom 2. It's tied for worst adaptation with an upcoming one. The movies are good. This one suffers from including only about 1/2 of the book which includes the lead up to the next one. From here on they leave a lot of stuff out but unfortunately leave in dialogue from following movies that reference things this one left out. The Order of the Phoenix is the longest book and the shortest movie but it's one of the best adaptations despite how much they had to leave out. I give credit to the fact that a different screenwriter was involved in OOP. Unfortunately they went back to Steve Kloves for the last 3 movies.

@@toodlescae Hmm I suppose it's very different if you've read the books or not. Even then, I don't compare the books to the movies since it's SO hard to keep everything in. I treat the two mediums separately so I can enjoy both and see the changes in the characters. Unfortunate that they leave in dialogue from following movies that reference things this one left out... that seems like just very bad planning and job done :(

Just to clarify. Harry is just a highschool level quidditch player. He is not a profesional player. The World Cup is for adults and its not between schools, but the actual National teams for each country (in the movie you can see Ireland vs Bulgary). So its profesional atletes playing as a job. This is kind of the equivalent to the soccer world cup in the real world. And harry's equivalent in the real world would be just a highschooler playing for his highschool's soccer team. About Victor Krum being in the team while he is still at school, this is because 1. He is in his last year of school and hes already an adult (your an adult at 17 in the wizarding world) 2. He is a quiddicht genius, so is not normal to be a profesional quidditch player that young, its just an exception, because he is specially good.

Voldemort wanting to dual Harry isn’t silly. Voldemort is a egomaniac. He doesn’t want to just kill Harry. He wants to prove that Harry living was a fluke and that he’s clearly and easily better than Harry.

One of the really interesting things about imposter Moody is that he wasn't putting on an act when he bullied Draco and shouted about his father, or when he had snide remarks for Igor Karkaroff. Barty Crouch Jr *hates* what he views as fair weather or traitor Death Eaters. Malfoy claimed after the first war that he was under the Imperius Curse and never really followed Voldemort (remember what Moody said about that curse in his first class). Malfoy was more than happy to relax in his position of influence and remain out of Azkaban, while loyal Death Eaters rotted in prison. Karkaroff turned snitch, landed Crouch Jr in Azkaban, and then legitimately renounced his loyalty to Voldemort, walking an honest path from then until his death. Another note is that Barty Crouch Jr escaped from Azkaban long before Sirius did. I wrote out a long explanation, but deleted it so I don't completely spoil it if you choose to read the books, which you totally should!

I'll be one of the few to say this is an improvement over the books. For the first time events are spinning out of Dumbledore's control. Someone tampered with the Goblet Of Fire right under his nose. He's frustrated and worried. Also, he's been known to raise his voice and drop the kindly pretense when needed. Remember his "silence!" to cut through the panic in the Great Hall when the troll was let in on Halloween. All of Michael Gambon's acting choices (or the direction he was given) moves the character away from Richard Harris' kindly and innocent portrayal - which was perfect because it was from the perspective of 11-12 year old little kids - to something darker, layered with agendas that Harry knows nothing about, and possibly not entirely altruistic or even always right as we begin to see.

If you need the age of the main trio always add 10 to the book number. The last two films are one book so they are 17 in that book. The movie depicted Beaubatons as a women only school which is untrue in the books. The guys underwater were never in any danger of dying. Their sleeping spell wasn't gonna wear off for one hour. The delay was given to the champions to test their decision making and prevent the Task of lasting too long. Harry in his naivity believed that you would die after one hour. You perfectly understood why Cedric HAD to die, narratively speaking I presume. Harry going alone would have not been believed by anyone, Cedric going alone would have just vanished without a trace and Voldemort's resurrection might not have been possible or would have gone unnoticed. For the story to progress, Cedric HAD to die. ironically, had Harry gone selfishly for the cup, Cedric would still be alive. The book's maze scene is very different from the movie. Barty Crouch evasion far preceedes Sirius Black's although they didn't notice it. Barty jr made his mother take polyjuice to look like him and and him to look like his mother so his mother went there instead and she died of despair shortly after and as Dementors don't really give a damn about appearances, they didn't notice the corpse they got wasn't the guy that was supposed to be their prisoner. Dumbledore is badly directed in this movie and it is the director's fault. Dumbledore acts nervous and panicked which is totally out of character. As for the Ministry being incompetent douches, you've only seen the beginning of it... Fantastic Beasts are not mandatory and are kind of messy but it's still nice additionnal lore; watch at your dicretion.

Both Barty Crouch Jr and SIrius Black escaped Azkaban by thinking around the safeguards. Sirius was an unregistered animagus, able to turn into a dog. Thing is, the Dementors only really effect humans, so when the dementors came around his cell, he would transform into a dog. He could have escaped for years, but didn't because there was no way to clear his name, or prove his innocence. To his mind, he had failed Lily and James Potter by failing to protect them from Wormtail's deception. . . . and before the Potters' murder, he had actually clashed with Lupin, thinking Lupin was being turned to Voldemort's side because Voldemort had the support of werewolves and believed Lupin going to turn against them. So he had no friends, thought Peter had blown himself up, and that Lupin likely hated him (for accusing him, and because Lupin thought Sirius had sold out the Potters). But then, he was allowed to look at a newspaper in prison, where he saw the Weasley family in Egypt. A family photo. With Ron holding a very familiar rat (after all, the three Animagus friends -- James Sirius, and Peter -- knew each other's animal forms). And that familiar rat was missing a toe (as Peter had lost a finger). He realized what had happened and began planning his escape to find and kill Peter. In dog form, he escaped, as the Dementors could not sense the human Sirius in his cell. So they entered to investigate and did not stop the animal from leaving. __________________ Barty Crouch Jr had help from his parents to escape. As she was dying, Lady Crouch begged her husband to set Junior free; but Senior could not do so legally. So they staged a visit to Junior in Azkaban. They brought polyjuice potion (enough for two) and a blanket. The dying Lady Crouch disguised herself as Junior and Junior was made to look like his mom via potion. And, as Death Eaters don't really differentiate human from human, Junior escaped looking like his mom. Mrs Crouch was later buried in Azkaban. Barty Crouch Sr then kept Junior drugged and under control for years, with their house elf Winkie as his primary caretaker. Winkie convinced Senior that Mistress would have wanted her son to see the Quidditch World Cup, as he loved Quidditch as a child. Senior gave in. But afterwards, when the stupor was wearing off, and Senior wasn't able to recapply it due to preoccupation with the rampaging Death Eaters, Junior tried to sneak away (under an invisibility cloak). Winkie tried to stop him, but was too weak. Junior saw the Death Eaters and became enraged. He had been sentenced to prison for years while these guys remained free? They could only have remained free if they had pretended to not have been serving Voldemort willingly. Viewing them as traitors in need of reminding that their Master was still powerful, he cast the Dark Mark over the grounds. When the Aurors showed up and Supefied the area, he was struck my a bolt, knocking him out. It was this display of casting the Mark that alerted Voldemort to a willing and capable servant still at large, whereupon he sent for Crouch Jr. And then made plans to hunt and kill HP. _________________

I honestly think a lot of it is from life experience and reading books and watching movies. I also have in mind that a lot of movies try to have sneaky twists and, after watching a few Harry Potter movies, it seems like a LOT of times, the characters are not who they initially are shown to be (like the Defense against the Dark Arts teachers. Quirrel seems weak and cowardly, but he's the evil guy in the end. Snape seems to be trying to harm and sabotage Harry, but he's actually countering Quirrel. Quilderoy Lockhart is this amazing person that's been on so many adventures but turns out he's the opposite, a coward and one trick pony wizard). So there's a common theme here where the watcher (not sure how it is in the books since I've never read them), is lead to believe that the character is one way, then they are not at all. I also feel like it was weird introducing Cedric so early as a new character, and the fact that they are in a "very dangerous situation" for the tri-wizard cut and "people die", I assumed someone would die, and it's always best if we've formed a sort of connection to them. It's harder to predict what will happen to movies that aren't in a series/franchise

If I remember correctly and I’ve read the books and watched the movie many times in the past but, the reason why harry could use expelliamus easily against avada kadavera isn’t because expelliarmus is equally powerful as the killing curse but more the fact that harry and Voldemort’s wands share the same core, the phoenix that gave a feather to create Voldemorts wand gave another feather and it so happened to be Harry’s wand that received the second feather as better explained in sorcerers stone by ollivander the wand maker. The fact that the wands share similar cores doesn’t allowed the owners to fatally harm one another so even if Voldemort tried he cannot kill harry while using the wand that shares the same core as Harry’s he would have to use another wand. Wand are kind of funny and confusing like that the books definitely explain things better

I've gathered that the wands are pretty important now that I've watched Deathly Hallows part 1 :D But even then, wands just seem SO convoluted and, I REALLY hope the books shed a LOT of light on how it works. @@VerowakReacts Right out of the gate from the title of the movie, before you even start watching it, you seem to know the foundational plot. In the Prisoner of Azkaban reaction, you said, "Someone who might be WRONGFULLY accused of a crime." Lol That is literally the whole plot. A more general assumption would be (someone who is a prisoner in Azkaban) blah blah blah....etc. Then in Goblet of Fire, you are saying that (it is some sort of Olympic tournament where different schools compete)? Do different schools compete? How did you know? Maybe you have watched the trailers. I don't know what is going on here. Also, Goblet of Fire, in no way shape or form, gets you close to assuming that it would be some school tournament. It could be anything; a literal goblet of fire that enhances an individual's power, or some shit, or perhaps a mysterious artificat. On top of that, The Prisoner of Azkaban apparently had the most unexpected moments in the series up to this point. In that, when Harry was at night strolling using that map trailing Peter Pettigrew, you literally said, "It's the rat." How tf do you get to that? You also said that Hermione has a necklace that does something, and at some point in your life you knew what it did, so you clearly know what's up. In that same reaction, when Lupin was teaching the class and the bogurt turned to the moon and you said, "Is he a werewolf?" I mean, come on, that is way too precise and you said that with confidence. There are more things I have noticed, but this is just off the top of my head. I am sure I can break down all the reactions with precise quotes of your assumptions, but I don't have time for that. Not to come off as offensive, if you know things about the plot, instead of saying that it's your first time watching, it would be better if you were transparent about it.
@VerowakReacts

@@edgybastard1952 Prisoner of Azkaban assumption was because Harry Potter has a tendency of showing something, then it turning out to not be what the obvious assumption is. So a prisoner (one would assume they are guilty) could mean that they actually shouldn't be a prisoner (therefore wrongfully accused). This stems from Quirrel not being who he was first shown to be, same with Gilderoy Lockhart, and Snape (that he was trying to harm Harry, when in fact, he was not). Goblet of Fire... Unless a magician swallows magic, I assumed (wrongfully) that it was an Olympic torch for Quidditch. And since Hogwarts has matches throughout every year where each house competes, there's no way that they would have a random tournament just for that school. In my high school, we competed against different schools, so would make sense for a special tournament to involve more than one school. It's very common for championships to involve more than one school. It's not an "out of the blue" assumption. I assumed that since the Philosopher's Stone was an artifact, they wouldn't go with that again, I just figured each movie would be different from the next instead of having the same type of "goal" or important aspect. For Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry seeing the feet moving around. It didn't look like a person was walking (unless they were drunk, which I assumed wasn't the case since they're in a school), and I remembered that Scabbers had run away. So movement looked like a rat could be skittering around. The necklace was something I saw as a clip like 15 years ago since I like time travelling. I'm assuming it was some kind of "top 10 time travelling in movies" thing since the movie itself was not familiar at all. With Lupin.. what is scared of a full moon? I've read books and seen movies in my life, and the only thing that I know of that change during a full moon are werewolves and saiyans with their tails still attached. This isn't Dragon Ball, so werewolf makes the most sense. It isn't that farfetched that someone could guess that. I knew the necklace, and that's what I said at the beginning. I know nothing else of any plot aside from what the title may tell me (like Prisoner of Azkaban, and I guess Goblet of Fire, though I did not guess completely accurately). If you can't believe that this is my first time watching these, then that's unfortunate. If I know something about the movie, I will state it beforehand, like I did for Prisoner of Azkaban.

Verowak, honestly, write a book. I mean: write a book. Yes. WRITE A BOOK!!! Your intuition is astounding, you guessed most of what was about to happen, and some of it way before you had any reason to think about that. Which means that your brain has a remarkable affinity for these kinds of plots. You could write stuff like this and it would be good. On a side note: many of your questions are answered in the book, also some of the foggier or suspicious, rather less logical stuff is clear there. This is the first movie that departs quite significantly from the source material. I see that others mentioned before the twin cores of Harry's and Voldemort's wands. it means that they will refuse to seriously battle against each other. Normally Expelliarmus cannot counter Avada Kedavra (which incidentally is an ancient Aramaic healing spell, it means "Let the thing be done" and it's the origin of Abracadabra), but in some special cases - like this one - it will work in unusual ways. Voldemort has no idea about the twin cores, has has no clue what happened in that graveyard. When twin wands are forced to battle each other, strange things happen. One wand can overpower the other and make it regurgitate echoes of the last spells that were cast with it in reverse order (in the movie Dumbledore mentions the name of this rare phenomena, Priori Incantatem, without explaining it). He does explain it in the book however. And in case you wonder, why did Harry's want overpower Voldemort and not the other way round, a basic principle is this: there's a lot more to magic than just waving a wand and uttering a spell. Your willpower, concentration, character, courage, intention matters. Harry accepted, almost embraced the idea that he will die, something Voldemort is incapable to do. That courage made his wand stronger

The Malfoys because of their connections, the Weasleys were given tickets because Mr Weasley had helped a Minister. This was the most butchered movie. They speak of Sirius as Padfoot, so no one will know. Address the letter to Padfoot, but Hedwig knows to find him. Sirius uses the floo powder to talk through the fireplace. He just pokes his face in the fire and says, Gryffindor Common room. Cho is seen in the previous book, plays as Seeker for Ravenclaw. Kept blocking Harry on his Firebolt because no way she was going to keep up with him. Pretty boy Diggory is Seeker of Hufflepuff. He didn't have to lean that close to Harry and whisper in his ear. There's a Boggart, a strange mist, a sphinx, a spider, a blast ended skrewt in the maze. That Harry encounters. Not bushes pressing into you and wind. He just took a drop of blood from Harry. They share wand cores, so when their spells collide, each tries to dominate the other. Harry holds on better.

Crouch Jr is also the one who killed his father earlier in the movie. 4. Again, I think there's good stuff in the movies, and in the books, but it's just unfortunate that the movies fixed some problems with the books BUT ALSO inserted new problems. In the movies especially the main characters flaws - as characters, not as people - is that Harry is too much a "special boy" who wins because he's the chosen one rather than earning it. Ron, of course, is too constrained by being put so firmly in the "clown/comedic relief" role... Hermione is too much of a Mary Sue because she gets to keep her own talent from the book but is also given Ron's expertise/wisdom. (She's still probably the best in the movies; her being too powerful is a problem plot-wise, but she actually has a personality to a degree that I don't really think the other two do.) I think this movie might be when the characters start to really come into their own; I really like how Harry shows honor by revealing the first challenge to Cedric. I think that's really the first time in the movies that he really makes a choice rather than being kind of swept along by circumstances. I think the first two movies are fun enough - there's fun stuff in them - so you can have a good time even if the characters are probably too flat, too generic. The third really stepped it up, going from merely a fun plot to an actually good and interesting plot, with a much more interesting conflict. Sirius Black is an interesting villain, Remus Lupin is actually a really likeable character - probably the first time in the series that there's a character who is actually soft, who interacts with the other characters (the main three) and talks to them, listens to them, rather than just trading plot points - and the Dementors roaming the school adds an element of danger, a darkness, that really helps. This one builds on that, I think, in maybe being the first one where the characters actually start to feel fully 3-dimensional. I think the books and movies are pretty obviously flawed but it's also really easy to see why they were so successful; there's a lot of good stuff in here.

Oh, and a few quick things: 1 - Yeah, some people have a problem with Harry winning because it's all handed to him, but as you said: it makes sense because it was a trap. Barty Crouch Jr conspired to ensure that Harry passed all the tests, so... 2 - I agree with you about Ron, BUT in Ron's defense: I don't think he knows yet that he likes Hermione. So I don't think it's a situation like you said. He's just a kid, so he's not really in touch with his emotions yet. He didn't realize he liked her until he saw her with Viktor. And he acted like an ass about it, which... I mean, it's not a likeable or attractive thing, but it makes sense that he was immature about it because he's immature. 3 - Yeah, Ginny wasn't really in 3 or 4 because she's not important in them. Given how her role expanded, you can see how JK Rowling's writing wasn't great, in that the people who made the movies completely cut Ginny out of 3 and 4 because she's not important at all; a better writer would've had Ginny play a more important role, would've spent time on developing Ginny as a character since she becomes much more important later on. 4 - Yeah, Neville is a likeable character. He grows perhaps more than any other character in the series.

I think it's near impossible for movies and books to not have flaws. Some characters are better in one medium than the other, and I'm sure if we has different people adapting the books into movies, the characters would be different from the books and the movies we have. I just really enjoy seeing what people come up with.

I could see you as either Slytherin or Ravenclaw, but I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Ravenclaw. I see intelligence common to both, but not so much the fierce ambition of Slytherin. I'm thinking Ravenclaw.

There is also a channel called movie flames that’s explains each characters whole timeline. The differences between each book and movie. Krum was bewitched in the maze by Crouch Jnr who also killed his father because he had recognised him. When the movies came out the lack of any International Quidich was very disappointing to most fans. Also a lot of other good things from the book were missing because of time constraints. Not my favourite by a long way.

I think the first one is amazing actually! It manages to have an interesting story and set of characters without relying on the original series too much. The second one is completely garbage, it gets nowhere, but at least it's well done in terms of photography, CGI, etc. The third one I also loved, but the screenplay is veeery poorly made.

I do think there's a very different outlook on the movies, which I find interesting to hear. When people treat them as an adaptation, and when they treat them separately. Am I the only one who suspects that OP already knows the story and is trolling all of us? OP, your "guesses" do not conform to the norm of a first-time watcher - and please don't try to tell me that you are a story-guessing genius. Nor that you simply got lucky. Your comments are too suspicious to ignore. I'm going to watch this reaction to see if you are genuinely surprised by anything. I suspect that you won't be, but I may be wrong. I don't know what to tell you, this is my first time seeing this movie. I do think seeing it as a kid and seeing it as an adult is very different, and easier to predict some things. I guess some things wrong, some things right. I had no idea David Tennant was in this movie, for example. I'm not a story-guessing genius, I will never claim that. Just because I don't conform to the "norm" doesn't mean I'm not a first time watcher. The "norm" is just that... the norm, there are some outliers that don't conform.
@VerowakReacts

I've commented the same thing for someone else but: I honestly think a lot of it is from life experience and reading books and watching movies. Qilderoy Lockhart is this amazing person that's been on so many adventures but turns out he's the opposite, a coward and one trick pony wizard).

Ron was a much more of a serious character in the books. They made him a bit of a clown in the movies. Character development was way better in the books for all three. Harry being less of a saint and Hemione less of a miss know it all ! Likewise, there was a ton of stuff that got missed out in the movies. There was a very important sub-plot running throughout book four that wasn't even touched on in this movie. The wizarding worlds media attack on both Harry's and Dubledores credibility. That formed the basis for the start of book five and why Harry finds himself on trial before a biased Minister of Magic who clearly believes everything he had read in the media. If you have enjoyed the movies I'd recommend trying the audio books read by Stephen Fry. Well worth a listen if you out jogging or similar.
