Originally, Russell Chase was supposed to be rejected due to his alcoholism, and when everybody had used their missiles, he showed up in his cropduster with a missile strapped to it already knowing he would have to crash his plane into the aliens' main weapon to stop it. In test screenings the sight of Russell's rickety old biplane keeping pace with the jet fighters as they protected him during his final attack looked so ridiculous that people laughed (you can find that version on RU-vid though, because it wasn't used in the final film, the special effects weren't completed), so it was changed to the version you see now. An added benefit of the change is that you see Russell when he makes the decision to sacrifice himself and getting the courage to do it when he looks at the photo of his children.
Felt so good to have Russell Casse come to the rescue, after having him dissed by his son for being drunk and also for having him dissed for telling people he'd been abducted.
The audience also reacted negatively to the thought of planned self-termination, so they made it spontaneous. The funny thing is they didn't reshoot the scene. Since they used CGI to create the biplane, all they did was substitute and F/A-18 instead. That explains the odd way it flies for a jet fighter.
The president’s speech will always give me chills. I hope you ended up appreciating him a bit more by the end of the movie. I felt he was kinda like a “modern” presidential type figure. Not the classic type of president we’d seen in the past. He was cool but still didn’t take any crap from anyone.
@@jimvick8397 To be sure, President Biden has not yet had to react to the occasion of the fighting to prevent the end of human existence by alien invasion
When i was young i always thought this is the most patriotic "american" speech ever. But it WORKS! Now the best thing is Bill Pullman is playing the hero in Spaceballs which is slightly different of a kind.
This movie was part of my group of friends "Will Smith saves the world" series. Every year he starred in a movie where he ends up saving the world and came out around July 4th weekend. Independence Day (1996), Men in Black (1997) Enemy of the State (1998) and Wild Wild West (1999).
Independence Day is-GREAT-I know people say it's chessy, but, came out in 1996. I LOVE: Enemy of the State !!! Gene Hackman was-GREAT-in this film. LOL. Didn't like: Men in Black and Wild Wild West was a very hot-mess !!! LOL.
One retcon popular on usenet at the time was that our computer tech was based on discoveries from the alien craft, so we could write compatible code. P.S. I think David was using a Mac...
This movie launched Will Smith's acting career to the moon. He was BIG after this. I remember watching this during my town pass, It came out the weekend of my Basic Training graduation. I'm not sure how much press there was leading up to it since I was in basic but I know all during Tech School people were talking about it. 90s Will Smith was a juggernaut. This, Men In Black, Bad Boys... he was killing it. He could have been killing it even more if he hadn't turned down starring in The Matrix to make Wild Wild West. To this day he wishes he could take back that decision.
Independance day shows for exemple a real scientist theory. If nobody communicate in space to show their existences like high civilisation life form is because probably there is in space hostile life form (like pirates) and keep the radio silence is best way to stay alive.
I grew up in the town El Toro (they call it Lake Forest now) right next to the Marine Base. When my friends and I saw this film at the local movie theater, the audience broke out laughing when they said they said El Toro was destroyed.
It is like this movie 🎬 was predicting the Chris Rock incident the same way people say Back To The Future predicts 9-11 (The firey streaks left behind when Marty goes back to 1985. They are shown along with the store sign in that scene the is shaped like the Number 9.).
I went to see this in the theater ON the Fourth of July, and it was so much fun. Everyone in the theater was cheering and clapping, and it was such a cool experience!
The officer who shot the alien at Area 51 is played by Adam Baldwin, who has a considerable presence in science fiction. He was also in "Predator 2," "Control Factor, "Digital Man," and "Serenity." In science fiction TV he was in "Firefly" "Chuck," and "The Last Ship " These are in addition to many non sci-fi projects. He wasn't a good guy in "The Patriot."
@@powerbadpowerbad My Uncle Q.D. served on the CV 6 Enterprise during WW2. I found a book about the ship and its crew to read and give him. I have a friend from high school who worked on F-14s during his Navy days.
@@jeffthompson9622 COOL,your uncle served in WW2 !!! That'a-GREAT-gift to give your uncle, that was a very different breed of americans back in WW2,now some are very-SOFT. LOL. Is your friend still in the navy ???
Your reaction to the dog is the same way how I felt the first time watching the movie! Yeah, this movie is a lot of blast! Will Smith still got that right hook 26 years later except with an open palm and it wasn't at a desert either... lmao, but besides that this movie is amazing! Bill Pullman's speech still gives me the chills after all those years! Such an epic speech! The battle is also fun too! I also love how Jeff Goldblum referenced that Jurassic Park line "must go faster" when they were escaping the mothership. Glad you enjoyed the movie, Evie! :D
Fun fact: Will Smith ad-libbed the "and what is that *_SMELL?_*" line. They shot the scene on some salt flats full of long-dead shrimp. It got pretty fragrant out there sometimes.
Why would you think 1996 movies wouldn't rock? This movie was one of the worst. 1996 movies piss all over this years & last years films... Fargo Sling Blade Swingers Bottle Rocket Trainspotting Primal Fear Welcome to the Dollhouse Mission: Impossible The Cable Guy A Time to Kill Sleepers Jerry Maguire Scream The People vs. Larry Flynt Beavis and Butt-Head Do America
It was nice that you actually left in a lot of scenes that other reactors cut out. Even in the blurred-out ones, you made it so we could still hear the dialog. It was nice, especially after seeing some really short reactions that are, well, disappointing to watch.
Yeah it must be some kind of extended cut.. there's a lot of scenes I don't remember being in the original (like the incredibly cheesy virgin thing at 38:42).
Watch "Children of Men" (2006) if you haven't. It shows the endgame of younger peoples' transference of emotions properly directed toward children to infantilized animals instead, combined with the environment being flooded with birth control chemicals.
Will Smith And Jeff Goldblum (David) are the big Mega famous superstar actors in this movie. But there are many others, including Bill Pullman (President) and Judd Hirsch (David's dad). There is also a role for the guy who plays Commander Data in Star Trek The Next Generation (the long-haired, eccentric scientist at Area 51).🙂
Last night I was watching it on the STARZ streaming service and I really like the movie, it's strange that it's not on Disney+ because it's from Fox Disney
the flaw in the chute coming out of the back of the plane the F/A 18 doesnt have a chute becausethey need to be able to land on carriers no need for a chute but thats hollywood
I love how in these sort of movies girls give about zero fucks about people getting blown to pieces but are so concerned about the well-being of dogs, cats, hamsters and the ozone layer. 😂
I remember seeing this at the theater and enjoying it, but I was like 14. I still do for the most part, but it seems to get cheesier and cornier with every re-watch lol. I guess it's the writing and the effects, cause acting pretty much carries it, it's a solid cast...At any rate, I'm here for the reaction, cause for real Evie, I'll watch you watch...golf...witcha little fine self 😘
1. Hiller is a USMC Captain he knows his holiday off is over. That's why he didn't even have to wait to be called in. Jasmine should know that. 2. In the theater I was in the people in there actually stood up and cheered when the White House and the Capitol Building blew up. 3. In my top 10 reasons out of thousands to NOT live in a Metropolis. Getting the hell out. 4. Lisa Jakub/Alicia is FINE!😍😋 5. Brent Spiner/Dr. Okum played Data in Star Trek TNG. It's nice to see him with emotions. 6. Goof: The president said he sent up an AWAC. It's AWACS= Airborne Warning And Control SYSTEM. 7. Hiller FAIL parashoot jump.🙄😲
i've seen this movie countless times since it released, yet i've never seen some of the scenes in this reaction. i can only assume this is like a director's cut or something with deleted scenes?
It's funny how when they launch the first nuke, they have the bomber quickly approaching the alien ship and the President has to hurry and give the OK. It's rather ridiculous, because they could've and would've launched the nuke from a hundred miles away. It wasn't necessary to get anywhere near that close.
You might like Bill Pullman (the President, here) better in THE LAST SEDUCTION (1994) Linda Fiorentino, Bill Pullman, Peter Berg Very cool movie, and no one else is reacting to it. You could.
Not a fan of the extended version. The boy's sickness was a side story that distracted from things rather than adding. Still, this is a great flick. I haven't heard the same said about the sequel . . .
Hi Evie!🙂Yeah, this was one year before Men in Black, so Will Smith was really riding a wave of popularity. They did have many big cast action movies in the 90s like "Armageddon" (1998), "The Rock" (1996), and "Con Air" (1997). The president was meant to start out as a wimpy unpopular character, and then become a better more powerful president during the course of the film. But that being said, Bill Pullman would not be a top choice as casting for president to me either. Great reactions to Independence Day, Evie!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Im a former communist im not disillusioned i still admire thee idea but after 8 years of study seeing the difference between what is written and what actually happens and seeing it from every conceivable angle. I can say it has a 100% failure rate. That being said im not American but even when i was a communist i did celebrate July 4 who wouldn't it's a day celebrating sticking it to the British Empire. The movie is cool to.
I figured the Presidential speech would get you to change your mind about him! I GIGGLED like when I was a schoolgirl when you heard it and smiled and saluted! 👱♀👱♀👗👗👠👠❤❤
29:29 this movie came out during the 1996 presidential election. There was a theory that President Whitmore was an image of the Bill Clinton everyone wished he was (he was a combat veteran to contrast to accusations that Clinton was a draft dodger, they were both younger (boomer aged) presidents, both had popularity problems, etc). One aspect of this was, with the unpopularity of Hillary Clinton, the First Lady in the movie was killed to remove her from the minds of voting viewers. I’m not saying there’s any truth to this theory, but it’s an interesting insight into thought processes in the mid 90s. If nothing else, boomer was a compliment from the liberal youth unlike today.
@@hv3926there were several theories floating around about how this movie fit into politics of the day. I remember hearing different stories of reactions to the destruction of the White House: some claimed the theater broke out in applause (supposedly due to the unpopularity of the Clintons), others talked about stunned silence. Looking at the environment of the day, with the 1994 elections just completed (with all of the vitriol around the Gingrich led congress), I’d be very surprised if Hollywood would make a movie at that time with a sympathetic, heroic Republican unless it was obvious he was a” McCain” type who butted heads with the “crusty old” Republicans. With politics having, in general, moved left since the 90s, I can see where Whitmore would seem to be a Republican. My guess (if the theory I mentioned is true) is that, because the country seemed to be moving to the right at that time, they would make Whitmore a solid centrist (which he was in mid 90s politics) to try to imply Clinton was one too.
15:08 I'm like you.. Kill as many people in a movie that you want to. 🤨Blah!! but kill an animal. And I'm 😭😫 P.S. Don't watch the sequel, it's just a badly written, money grabbing sequel. The usual Hollywood BS. Wringing every bit of money they can, out of a franchise, just like they did with the *Alien* movies and the *Predator* movies.
@@bigdream_dreambig Oh, come on! From the way people react to flying to the invasion, to using human programming in their system after flying up there without trouble, to characters getting close to the president so easily even during an Earth-changing event, etc. It was all very funny. It's not as funny as Armageddon, but it's on the list.
@@cshubs Interesting. None of those things were issues to me except the software compatibility, and that was resolved when someone pointed out that they'd mentioned that the roots of much of modern tech came out of discoveries with the Roswell craft. 🤷♂
@@cshubs almost like its fiction and not meant to be realistic. Weird, right? The fact people look for realism in a movie about an alien invasion is whats ridiculous. Gotta learn to just watch a movie without critiquing everything from start to finish
Tbh this reaction was not good. You barely talk, which would be fine except you also show zero emotion or reaction to 95% of the movie? What am I missing..?
26:44 you can always tell a Democrat… “We must have disenfranchised those poor invading aliens of their rights or else they wouldn’t be so mad at us”!!!
