47:20 A lot of people don't realize that the reason Russel (the pilot Dad)'s Missile wouldn't launch against the Main Weapon right here is because of the fact that he almost fired it when he first got into the cockpit @41:00. I wonder if this is how submarine Kursk sank: someone may have pushed a missile launch button by accident or joke, and the launch was cancelled, which maybe jammed the missile aboard the sub. I am aware, that the launch mechanics are different, such as airplane vs. submarine, missile sizes, U.S./Russian tech. But during a military exercise with Kursk involved, the missile in the submarine exploded as it might have gotten jammed in a similar fashion. And so the poor vessel was gone.

Yeah, being a drunk is never a good idea.
@AudioThrift
@AudioThrift 4 месяца назад
Canonically, yes. But the actual reason is because the original ending had Russel getting rejected for being a drunk so at the last minute he shows up with his little crop duster plane with a bomb tied to the side. But we never saw him make the decision to sacrifice his life, and test audiences wanted to see that, so they changed it and reshot some sequences, but they left the original dialog and stuff in. That's why they asked who he was, if he was armed, rather than already knowing. They even left the scene in where the operator says "all missiles have been fired." It's also why the supersonic F-18 moves so slowly; they just edited the crop duster out and inserted the F-18. They had to add the missile launch and jam sequence later. I think I've seen this movie a few too many times. :P
@HiddenWindshield
@HiddenWindshield 4 месяца назад
@@mardus_ee I strongly doubt it. It's one of those things that makes a good story in a movie, but isn't a realistic thing to happen in real life. For real fighters and submarines, when you push the launch button, the missile/torpedo launches. There's no delay in which it can be canceled, the weapon just goes.

If you like Judd Hirsch and sci-fi/fantasy, check out a tv series called 'Forever'. Judd co-stars as a 70plus yr-old 'son' of an immortal MD who helps local law enforcement solve crimes using his Holmes-like powers of deduction, honed over the two centuries he's been alive. Then one day, the immortal receives a phone call from a much older immortal. How about two-millenia old? Malevolent, violent, vicious, and intent on harming others. 'Forever' lasted one season but the makers were able to provide satisfactory closure. Another great series in which Judd Hirsch co-stars is 'Numb3rs'. Hirsch portrays the father of two sons. One son is a team-leading law enforcement officer of the F.B.I., the other son is a genius mathematics professor. Premise for the series is basically, maths professor helps law enforcement solve crimes using mathematics.

I think they're only interested in finding pockets of resistance, rather than actually hunting down every individual human. The nuke scene was pretty shocking and really did convey a complete sense of hopelessness of the situation. The aliens simply shrugged off humanity’s deadliest weapon and kept going. FYI: In the expanded lore, once the computer virus was uploaded and it was confirmed that the aliens shields were down, the Russians and Chinese basically said, ‘F it’ and nuked over a dozen of the city destroyers. A harsh move to make, but it certainly was necessary given the short window that was available to the remaining Earth forces.

David's dad aka Julius Levinson was played by Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor Judd Hirsch, who has been nominated twice for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Ordinary People (1980) and The Fabelmans (2022). He is a brilliant actor, and when he has great material is even better. He is my favorite character in the film. David's boss with the gravelly voice is Harvey Fierstein, a Tony Award-winning playwright and actor, who wrote such stage plays and musicals as Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, and Newsies, while also acting in such shows as Torch Song Trilogy, Fiddler on the Roof, and Hairspray (he originated the role of Edna Turnblad onstage). He has also made other great films such as Mrs. Doubtfire (playing Robin Williams's brother) and Disney's Mulan (as the voice of Yao). Fun fact: The reaction from the actors when the alien's biomechanical suit pops open is genuine. Only Brent Spiner, the actor who plays Dr. Okin, was made aware what was going to happen. All of the other "scientists" were told that they would slowly pull back the suit to reveal the alien to the audience.

Hi Nick Reacts I am right in the middle of watching your post for Independents Day and this is so great! I appreciate your reactions with your girlfriend's very much. The way the dad with the three kids explained how important his sick son is to him really was toughing . That dad was going through a lot on his own but he put his son's needs above his . The whole world was in chiaos but his son needed help and he traveled far to get his son medical help.... I really love that scene . I am so pulled in to both your reactions to this movie and I am glad you both are invested in this. Thank you both for this

I LOVE this movie. It's a favorite re-watch of mine. I've always been a fan of Will Smith and his type of acting/humor. I've been a fan since Fresh Prince. Also, Will Smith's military buddy in this movie, Harry Connick Jr, is the nicest dude ever!!! I've met him a couple times at my work. He's just a normal, nice dude 😊

You all must be watching a Director's Cut version. I've seen Independence Day dozens and dozens of times and have never seen the scene where Jeff Goldblum and his dad run into oncoming traffic. Every time I've watched it they make their way to Wash DC with the road leading into DC empty, and his dad says something like "Everyone is trying to get out of the city, and we are the only schmucks trying to get in." (might not be the exact words).

Yep, everything about this movie was summer blockbuster. One of the great things about it was the use of practical effects in a lot of places. A well rounded sci fi action flick that didn't take itself too seriously. A great cast including Brent Spiner who played Data in Star Trek TNG.

The president’s daughter and Will Smith’s, son in this will be primarily main characters in the next movie that is takes place about 20 years exactly after this movie. You should follow up with that one😊 Also, if you’ve ever read the Independence Day book, it actually says that Russell…the pilot that took out the city destroyer ship, was actually denied a place as a pilot due to his alcoholism. And so he got out his biplane, strapped a Missle to the underside, and flew the biplane into the infrastructure, destroying the city destroyer. He knew he wasn’t coming back.

The tactical nuke they set off inside the mothership (while its systems were largely disabled) probably triggered their power production systems to go boom. The nuke isn't that powerful...but whatever power plant and star-drive system can get them across interstellar space...almost certainly IS that powerful. And I doubt it would respond well to having anything explode next to it...especially not the equivalent of a few dozen kilotons of TNT.

Hi Nick! I remember the theater being fairly packed the weekend it opened, watching it on the Big screen as a huge group of viewers was great. I miss those days. This movie had quite a few of known and lesser known Stars. The guy who played- Jimmy, WS's bestie was Singer and part time actor- Harry Connick Jr. ( Great singer btw, check out his music!); Judd Huirsh(?) was the Dad to David, he's best known from the old series- Taxi. The loopy grey haired Scientist, was Brent Spiner, better known to most as - Data, from Star Trek: Next Generation. Mae Whitman was the daughter of the President; and being that you've been watching- Friends, the Secret Service guy watching out from the First Lady was actually- John Bennett Perry--Mathew Perry's father. And speaking of fathers, one of the President's advisors was- Robert Pine, Chris Pine's Father. 😊

I know some of this has been done to death on this movie. However, you asked a question at the 26:00 mark of your video. The question is how realistic is it that something like Area 51 in Nevada, part of Nellis AFB, would be so highly classified that not even the president would know about it? Answer… not at all. The president is the final classification authority for everything within the US government. Nothing is too classified. If the president wants to know or see something highly classified, he can, and should. If the president wants to take classified material home, he only needs to ask and deem it declassified. No other person on the planet has that level of authority for US classified or sensitive materials. Not even the vice president, sec def, director of the CIA or NSA, no one. This myth kind of had its origins in the alien conspiracy which includes Area 51. Despite its many accuracy issues, I love this movie. It’s one of my favorite of all time. Great musical score by David Arnold.

Yep, came out around the 4th of July and it was incredible to be in the theater. My husband and I went on Independence Day itself, first showing of the day. Since we knew someone who worked in the theater from back when my husband was a manager there in college, we got to go in early and pick out our seats before anyone else came in, so we had perfect seats, too, because we knew the best spot acoustically to be. The amount of cheering was ridiculous. Of course, some of that cheering was when the White House blew up, but most of it was when the humans got a win. I haven't seen an audience be that excited during a movie ever, and I saw the original Star Wars movies as a kid when they came out. It was such an event and amazing on the big screen. And that speech was the best presidential speech. It's up there with some of the best real ones and much more inspiring than some of the ones of my lifetime. The reaction was great.

One of my favorite movies ever that holds a special place in my heart as it was the first movie I saw in theaters after my graduation from the U.S. Navy's Basic Training in June of '96. I never tire of watching this movie. Great Sci-Fi and action with a bit of disaster movie thrown into the mix, along with some very human and emotional moments. If you are interested in more movies in the disaster genre, I recommend 1974's The Towering Inferno, my favorite disaster movie ever. For a movie that will be turning fifty this year, the effects created to show the building at different stages of the fire are still very impressive, even this day of CGI.
