You really need to understand how Bird grew up and learned the game. Dirt poor and playing with brothers behind a restaurant he was washing dishes at.
@phunkjnky
@phunkjnky 4 месяца назад
I remember reading that he learned to talk and his high release jumper from the older black employees at the hotel he worked at in high school.
@imweakfordeaky
@imweakfordeaky 4 месяца назад
According to Larry’s own words from “Bird & Magic: A Courtship of Rivals”, he started playing against the brothers at the restaurant after school his 6th grade year. These grown men would let an 11-12 year old white kid fresh out of his classes for the day join them on the basketball court and teach him how to outsmart older and bigger players. He learned his streetball fake-outs and crazier passing skills from them, while also getting rock-solid grounding in fundamentals from his formal school team coach in basketball season. I wonder how many of those old waiters remember that little white boy who became a legendary superstar (they are probably in their late 70s and early 80s now , since Larry turns 68 this coming December …wow)

Yeah Bird was different alright. I was a Celtics season tix holder from mid seventies until 1993 and believe me. I've seen it all! He was everything you just saw and more. Sadly most people don't know how great he was because he was all about the game and NOT blowing his own horn like so many second rate players do. ESPECIALLY today!

Larry was damn near a psychologist the way he would get into people's heads. He told the media he was gonna play a game left-handed, then dropped 27 in the first 3 quarters playing with his off hand. Letting the team know what he was gonna do the day before demoralized them all, that he didn't respect anyone on the entire team enough to guard him with his off hand. The 3-point contest where he was still in his warm-ups, telling everyone "I just want to know who's gonna come in second", just to flex, is another example. He knew mind games could affect your physical game, and he did it like a supervillain.
@stanleymyrick4068
@stanleymyrick4068 4 месяца назад
What makes it special, is it wasn't just talk. He backed it up again and again. Get someone running their mouths and doesn't rise to the occasion to back it up, then that is a whole different feeling. If you actually do it, then it is less bragging or whatever, and more, just speaking truths.

There are so many video's about Bird, what he told the other team and what other great players have said about him. Even though there are all these videos, Bird is still underrated by most people. Bird is in the top 3 players of all time and it could be argued that he is the best of all time. Bird was just different. How many stories are there about other NBA players telling the other team what they were going to do before it happened, even at crucial times during the game, and then went out and did what they said they would.

It's heartwarming that the younger generations want to look back and have some love and respect for this Golden Era of the NBA. The league play was old-skool with more physical play and the NBA had so many star players that had mega skills that still played with class and dignity. Coaches wore suits to games and the 3point shot wasn't a focus as it is today. It was a game of fancy passing and positioning to post-up and break down the opposing defense. McHale's moves in the paint are legendary. I was in grade school in the 80s and glad that I got to witness this era, and I now realize what I was watching then....was so great. The rivalry between Magic and Bird, and their solid friendship, really set the bar to a whole new level, and those Finals between the Lakers and Celtics were amazing then.

FLY BIRD! The "Fly Bird" is always incomplete when told by Brad himself. The full story is even better: Bird left Brad jump, then he touched Brad's ass with the ball (while Brad was in the air), told him "fly bird" and THEN shot at the last second winning the game! The audacity to embarrass a player while risking the game has Bird all written on it! THE TORTURE CHAMBER That was Mc Hale's nickname due to his incredible array of movements under the basket, but Bird used the phrase too while embarrassing opponents.
