Shon he's not in the conversation because he wasn't an egomaniac and self-promoting fool like so many players today. He laid low and let his play do all the talking. I was a Celtic season ticket holder through the 70's & 80's and I've seen them all come and go. He was one of a kind!

He's not in the conversation with people that don't know any better, I do. NBA Players prior to 1980 saved their 💩 talking for the court. The league was in danger of folding, all the guys spent a lot of time in college, Bill Bradley is a Rhodes Scholar and veteran politician. Today, everyone in the spotlight is their own brand; they'd be fools NOT to self promote.

When you spend half your career resting for the next game of stirring out with an ingrown toenail, it’s easy to last really long. Bird played through everything like he was The Terminator.

Exactly. Hey Lebron, that mustve been brutal beating jimmy butler in disney world for a “title”. Bird only had to go through kareem/Magi/Worthy/MJ/Pippen/Rodman/Isaiah/Dr J/Moses Malone/Hakeem Olajuwon/Sidney moncrief/Bernard King and Barkley etc etc etc

I don't like the GOAT debate , basketball is a team game. The question I find more interesting is "who is your starting 5?". Comparing a Shooting Guard and a Small Forward is pointless in my mind. But personally, I'd chose Bird over Lebron on my starting 5.

Take this into consideration. Bird was great at everything. He was a phenomenal shooter and passer. He didn't quit until the last buzzer sounded. He challenged not only his opponents but his team as well. Unlike Jordan with respect as well as others, he didn't need to shoot to beat you. He made his team better with assists and rebounds.
@jas137

Correct, and add to that a next level: he also was coach of the year, and executive of the year, showing that DEEP understanding of the game!

I can't answer that. What I can say is. In 1983. A fifteen year old me ( 53 in thumbnail ) was flippin channels. Larry. Made me stop, & watch. He controlled entire games. Fed all his teammates. Made the games fun, & exciting to watch. PS. Had never watched a game. Before that day. Never missed a Celtics Laker, or Celtics Pistons, game. Until. Larry Retired. Haven't watched more than five minutes since then. I find Today's style of play painfully boring, & hard to watch.

Yeah, I was born in 70 and watched the 79 NCAA final and all those early 80s NBA championships. I actually liked the Lakers thinking their fast style of game was appealing, but everyone knew Bird was the best player. When he shot, you expected it to not just go in, but swish!

I live close to where Larry grew up in Indiana. In his younger years he played against my brother. I know his roots and I understand his passion for the game. I think it’s in the soil here. It’s not a seasonal sport in Indiana. It’s a 24/7/365 sport here for some reason. You can eventually get a feel for everything that ball can do. Larry felt it. I can tell w hen he’s falling and can still remain conscious of where the goal is and shoots to hit it.

Just the fact that Larry was an integral part of saving the NBA from drowning makes him the GOAT, IMO. Add to that his coach of the year and executive of the year, which will likely NEVER happen again, and he's truly in a league of his own, as far as NBA great. I understand that others might be better players in certain, narrow criteria, but Larry truly understood and executed on another level, in ALL facets!
@Childofbhaal

The fact that the year before Larry the Celtics were 29-53 and then as soon as he joins they go 61-21 is very telling. Dude had an immediate immense impact. He was the definition of a team player. MJ is the GOAT player and skill wise but nobody understood the game and had the basketball IQ like Bird

Great reaction. Love the honesty and energy. The vid itself is awesome, too. I think this way, that Michael was the greatest one on one ball player I have ever seen play. He could go through a whole team to score with ease. But Larry Bird was the best all around player I have ever seen. He had no weaknesses. He was a better passer and rebounder than any small forward I have watched, even LeBron. And both Michael and Larry had that clutch gene galore!

Love this reaction, and always love your fairmindedness and enthusiasm. Thanks, too, for mentioning Bird's clutchness on defense; he is rarely given credit for his great defense even though he was voted in 3 times as NBA All Defense 2nd team. I'm wondering, though, if you might consider, when reacting to basketball, enlarging the frame with the game, even though it would mean making the frame with your face smaller, because we're now watching a lot more people and a lot of fast action in what is now a very small frame, v one face that's pretty much stationary.

And Larry could have easily gotten that quadruple double, it was the end of the third quarter and they were up so far on the score & when Larry went out of the game he already had a triple double and they were so far ahead, but the coach and his teammates urged him to go in as he had the entire fourth quarter to get a quadruple double - but Larry just said "nah ive done enough damage" - he only cared about winning and chasing stats didnt interest him - too bad cause that quad-double would have been a great addition to his LEGEND.

In the Next Generation the GOAT would be Michael Jordan. In the following generation the GOAT would have been Kobe Bryant. And in today's generation, the GOAT would be LeBron James. Bird told a teammate he spent a lot of practice time shooting left handed because it lessened the pain in his feet. If you watch his games over the years he definitely was a right handed shooter. What's crazy to me is when you see his right hand up close his finger is mangled and crooked - never healed straight.

And as I got older, my respect for him as a man matched the amazement of his ridiculous basketball skills and his work ethic and his hustle and his TEAM first attitude and his ability to play through pain/injury, etc.....!! Keep learning about Bird the player and the man.....I GUARANTEE THAT YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!! Much love and respect 🤙

Yea. He won the third MVP the year _after_ he messed up his back... In the friggin 80s, the most stacked league there ever was. Absolutely inhuman. Larry Bird is an alien or some sh¡t, no human could do wht he did with all those injuries.

Clutch shooter, passer, rebounder and defender. Still the best all-around player I"'ve seen except, maybe, for Meadowlark Lemon, but that's a different Legend and venue.

Yeah!!! Nobody else wants to be on a roster with McHale and Parish! The biggest difference between Bird and Magic (I'm 57 I saw them play, a lot) Bird's outside shot, he was UNCONSCIOUS!!! That said, would you rather throw the ball to McHale or Truck Robinson? The Celtics were a cohesive unit but Larry would've been great in any situation. Great teammates make Championships possible, without them people would reference Bird the way do Barkley

The Celtics record the year before Larry Bird came (1978-79): 29-53. The year Bird arrived (1979-80): 61-21. Only difference in their line-up? One man, Larry Bird. Next year (1980-81)? 62-20, and an NBA Championship. Yeah, he was kinda good!!

Of all these greats Bird has the worst resume but he is in conversation because we watched him play. Not to mention he played in the most competitive era of super teams. The 76’rs are kinda forgotten because of Lakers/Celtics but they are on same level. So Larry had to go through MJ, then Bad Boys (1st team to win back to back rings since 60’s) then 76’rs to face Lakers or Rockets. Brutal! Made 5 finals in a row but Bird/Mchale sustained major injuries by 88. I’m a Showtime fan so can attest Bird was unbelievable on the court. Like MJ all over on both ends of the floor. Liked your shout out to Timmy who also tortured my Lakers. Loved Kobe vs Duncan match ups. I have MJ 1a, Bird 1b. To round out all time team Magic, MJ, Bird, Timmy & Kareem. 2nd team Steph, Kobe, Lebron, Elgin Baylor & Wilt (!!)

BTW, in the 1980-81 season, Bird’s 2nd in the NBA, the Celtics had to beat the Philadelphia 76ers just to get to the Finals to win it all. The 76ers had Julius Erving (“Dr. J”) and Moses Malone, among other all-time greats, on that team. And the Celtics got down 3-1. Only 4% of all teams ever come back from being down 3-1, let alone being down that far against one of the greatest NBA teams in history. So what happened? The Celtics came back in a bruising, fight-filled, gladiatorial series (there’s a famous picture of Dr. J and Bird holding each others’ throats while Malone is holding Bird from behind) where each of the next 3 games was decided by 2 points, 2 points, and 1 point in Boston’s favor. The Celtics prevailed and went on to beat the Houston Rockets in 6 games to win the NBA Championship in Bird’s 2nd year in the league.

Bird spent the last 7 years of his career with a degenerative and debilitating back injury, which made him preactice little and lay down , not sit down, while playing.... Prime Bird was unstoppable.. Charles Barkley said Bird being unathletic was "God's way of evening the board".... The Logo himself, Jerry West, Called Bird "the most complete player"

I loved your reaction to Larry Bird. I subscribed, because you are the only reaction channel to listen to the narrator. It's so frustrating to watch the others, because they always miss all the extra information. Then, they are asking,"what happened"? 😒 Awesome job! ♥️🏀♥️

Irving and Larry used to hate each other, until they did a Converse comercial together in French Lick. When it was time for lunch, Larry told Irving his mom made them both lunch. Well, Irving couldn't say no to that. During lunch Larry's mom said " ‘Magic, you’re my favorite basketball player." The rest is history.

I’ll die on this hill… There has never been a more complete all around NBA player that ever played than Prime Larry. Pre-injury Prime Larry did everything well, was an All D 2nd teamer, and had no holes in his game. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do offensively on any spot of the floor, and his hustle and clutch ability was off the charts. The only player I’d even consider taking over Apex Larry is Apex Jordan, and even he wasn’t the shooter from range Larry was.

Love your reactions, Shon. Yes, Larry was the founder (and 3-time member) of the 50/40/90 club. Something Clayton left off his accolades chart, Larry was voted to the All-Defensive second team 3 times, so he wasn't a slacker on D either. He was one of those guys that didn't try to do it all alone, he made his whole team better. One of the greatest things about his trash-talk was that he would often tell the other team what he was about to do, and they STILL couldn't stop him - not just scrubs, either, but other Hall-of-Famers. How demoralizing is that!?
