I'm actually really impressed that they figured out what was going on so quick. A _shockingly_ large amount of people genuinely think this film had a happy ending, and that Dani finally found people who honestly cared about her. It says a lot about Aster's direction - he's managed to indoctrinate his _own audience_ without them even knowing.

Fun fact: Dani smiling at the end was her choosing to let everything go, and to just except the way her life is now. She is smiling like that because after everything that's happened to her, the trauma of losing her family, and then going through watching all her friends die horribly was to much. Her mind is broken, and she is expierencing the kind of joy only someone who has truly gone insane can feel.

Hereditary and Midsommar are truly twin movies, and Ari has described them as such. One in daylight, one in darkness. Death of family opens the film. One cult using love, the other using force. A character who is friendly to the protagonist actually driving them into the clutches of the cult. Massive head trauma seen a third of the way through that changes the whole tone of the film. And a character crowned king and queen at the end.

Idk if you noticed it - but what's really creepy about the scene where Dani's crying is the indoctrination happening there. First they surround her; so she can't see anything but them. A few references! Though the American/English group were being used for breeding/recruitment, the reason the cult were initially angry at them is because of their screaming when the old man jumped off the cliff. It caused him to hesitate, which is why he didn't land right. At 34:59 when Dani is being carried, look at the pattern of the trees in the background. It's really, really hard to see, but that's the face of Dani's sister, and the wall of thicket leading from the shed is the exhaust tube she killed herself with. At 39:12 in this video, they're using an indoctrination tactic on an individual level. They're crying in rhythm with Dani to give an illusion of empathy. Once they're all in sync, they begin changing the rhythm of their crying, causing Dani to cry in rhythm with them, which makes her subconsciously feel like part of them. Also, what they did to Simon is called a "Blood Eagle" in some Viking literature. It's not clear whether or not it ever actually happened, but it was not survivable for any amount of time. If you look closely, Simon's lungs are still moving, suggesting he's still alive. That's not anatomically possible, as the diaphragm has to move down to create suction/pressure differential to draw air. His lungs are pulled from his back and disconnected from the diaphragm. He would have died as soon as they were removed. And I don't know what it is aside of the red hair, but Maja is absolutely my type. I'm in my 30's so maybe a bit young, but feeding me a pube would be a pretty redundant move.

Absolutely love Ari's brand of psychological horror. Hereditary brought up some weird, deep seated childhood fears I had of my mum that I had managed to bury way down in the the depths. That scene when the mother bizarrely creeps and wakes her son up in the middle of the night to set him on fire, never felt that chilled in my life! Ari's second film, Midsommar, is a trip and has a slight nihilistic nod to one of the most bleak and hollowing films I've ever seen in "Der siebente Kontinent" by Michael Haneke.

If you read a bit of Norse mythology there are sooo many clues in this film leading up to what is going to happen. How many days and nights did Odin sacrifice himself on the world tree Yggdrasil for? 😉 What are the ages that Pelle mentions are cornerstones in their community and what do those two numbers add up to every time? What constellation is Odin associated to? What animal does that constellation ultimate take form as? So many clues. I loved watching this film for the first time because it was like picking up on all of these clues as if they were inside jokes.

This is one of the most mindblowing, disturbing, happiest, and most terrifying ends I have seen in a horror movie. It is genuinely crazy how many feelings you FEEL in this scene. When I first watched this ending, it made me feel so disturbed and so terrified, yet, it made me feel somewhat happy. As if I felt like I was almost going to smile with her... It's like this ending makes you into a trance and fall into the cult just like she does... As if Aster hallucinates the audience into thinking everything is okay too... Such a great way to manipulate the audience into a happy ending.

I used to live in that part of Sweden, Hälsingland. Though not very close to Hårga. The old story is that a mysterious figure appeared there during a party and started playing music which made others dance until they died. This tale eventually turned into regular dancing events in more modern times. One of my neighbours was into that. If I remember correctly a mall also had a painting on the wall depicting dancing and typical things for the area. Midsommar events can indeed involve dancing with traditional clothes. But what's also common is a lot of drinking, someone passing out on a couch or outside, others having sex in an empty room where the party is being held etc. I once read that more children than average are born 9 months after midsommar parties😂

I saw this great “symbolisms” thing on twitter forever ago that I’m sure Ash will appreciate; if this commune is Wonderland, then Pelle is the tornado that brought them there. Obviously his intent is not outright villainy or malice, but his intent is absolutely to recruit Dani. I think killing the others as sacrifices becomes incidental once he realizes that he has his hooks in Dani. At the table scene, when she mentions that supposedly Simon left without Connie, she tells Christian that she can imagine him abandoning her that same way (mirroring the dream she had the previous night). When Dani says this, a very hesitant but obvious smile curls itself comfortably on to Pelle’s face. That moment tells you everything you need to know lmao

Love this film so much. The three American men are like embodiments of everything that’s wrong with modern American culture: fear of commitment, inability to form proper relationships, blind careerist ambition and childish pleasure-seeking. They can’t give Dani what she needs when she’s experiencing the worst grief and trauma of her life. Then the Horga present themselves as a real, loving community who look out for each other and live in harmony. I love it because it’s simultaneously a critique of modern culture and a warning about false alternatives. Incredibly a lot of people saw this as a “girl boss” movie and thought it has a happy ending. Like “Yas you go girl!!” Absolutely blew my mind how stupid some people are, that they thought the film where a fascist death cult exploits a vulnerable woman’s trauma in order to kidnap and indoctrinate her was some kind of life-affirming happy-clappy feel-good film. Dark times we live in, honestly.

Dark times we live in, honestly." You're taking the outside observer's perspective. While anyone who sees this as a happy ending for her is looking at it from her perspective. How she went from a girl with no family, not much of any friendships, in an awful relationship and depressed to all hell for months. To someone who gets a brand new life, full of supportive, loving family and friends. There's probably an asterisk here and there, like they might kill her if she betrays them, but that new life is certainly preferable for her over being back on her couch crying, having no loved ones.
@AT-rr2xw
@AT-rr2xw Год назад
@@bajjanitor I mean, that is what a cult does. Prey on the vulnerable. It was a real bonus that they did not need to separate her from her family, since her family was already dead. However, if they had not died, then she might not have been so psychologically vulnerable to be a good prospect. Double bonus. All that was needed to separate her from her already semi-distant boyfriend...after he provided the community with a seed. I am sure that many people who are recruited into cults are overjoyed when they are accepted in, usually after fully being cut off from everything that they were before.

Happy happy happy. Now, whether I would be genuinely happy all of the time as opposed to occasionally resigned to the thought of there being no alternatives available to me is I guess beyond the scope of this discussion.
