Years later nirvana’s bassist, Krist Novaselic, revealed that Kurt’s first instrument was the drums (which was already well known ) but he said that because of that Kurt picked up an early habit of “clicking his jaw” to sometimes keep time….theres is a *lot* of footage of Kurt doing this….anyway, the excerpt of the interview with Krist explaining this is on RU-vid…but yeah, I’ve seen Kurt’s odd habit throw off & confuse many trained vocalists & opera singers who react to this song (with really clear & close up footage of it happening) because to them it runs so counter to their training….Anyway, great vid:) liked & subbed:)

You mentioned how quiet it was afterward. Kurt thought everyone hated that final song due to no one yelling and screaming like his usual concerts. Back at the hotel, he was bummed by what he mistook as a negative reaction. One of his crew had to explain to him, people didn't HATE it, they were STUNNED into silence. People who were in that audience said that they were trying to soak it in. It felt so powerful and solemn, they were almost afraid to speak, lest they break a spell.

This is a very old song. No one knows for sure its origins but it was first recorded somewhere in the 1940's by a guy called Dock Walsh. However, the more "known" version was recorded by Lead Belly a year or so afterwards.

I LOVE it when the classically trained reactors point out & talk about the vocal flip/yodel 30 seconds into the video because little do they know that some epic screaming & , distorted vocal flips/yodels are coming very soon, I mean he really flips it then, & it’s an epic example of that term in singing…I love watching you guys’ faces light up, hee hee….again, great reaction:D

I don't know why this song always makes me so so sad.... probably because it seems like such a tortured performance and he looks and seems like such a nice guy.... but anyway, sad for Kurt Cobain, Laine Staley, Scott Weiland, Michael Hutchins, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, etc. Even besides how tragic it is for them to have gone so young, can you imagine how much incredible music the world was robbed of by the loss of just these guys?

As always you gave a great analysis here and it's always fun and endearing to here a vocalist try to mimic parts of the songs that resonate with them (i.e. "the whole night through.") The MTV unplugged series gave some really amazing performances of many bands but in my opinion the best were Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Pick a song off of any of these live performances and you can't really miss. Nirvana's unplugged version of David Bowie's "The Man That sold the World", as well as "Lake of Fire", "Something In The Way", and "Jesus Doesn't Want me for a Sunbeam" are personal favorites. I would love to hear you dive into the voice of Maynard James Keenan. He is the singer of the progressive metal band Tool as well as the lead vocalist for two other amazing bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. A great place to dive into Tool are the tracks "The Pot", "Sober" (live 93'), or a personal favorite "The Grudge" (Which is the starting track from Tool's album Laturalus whose title track "Laturalus" is a masterpiece itself that includes utilizing the mathematics of the Fibonacci sequence in the lyric syllables, chord structures, and time signatures.) The rest of the Tool Army will surely make other suggestions. As for A Perfect Circle the tracks "Judith" (named after his mother who had suffered a diminished lifestyle after a stroke left her reliant on a wheelchair when he was 11), "The Noose", "Passive", and "Disillusioned" are great places to explore. And lastly some Puscifer tracks to start with would be "The Humbling River", "The Remedy", and "Momma Sed." Please start with MJK in Tool and spiral out into the others. Subscribed to this channel just hoping you'll eventually get around to this artist. And Since you already did a reaction to Johnny Cash's cover of NiN's song "Hurt" I'd also be interested to hear your interpretation to Trent Reznor's voice on the original song or any of Nine Inch Nails' catalog that you may not be familiar. Song Suggestions: "Closer", "We're in This Together", "The Perfect Drug", "March of the Pigs", "Head Like a Hole", "Terrible Lie", "The Reptile", "Burn", "The Hand That Feeds", "Something I can Never Have", "Somewhat Damaged", "Where Is Everybody", and "Wish" to add to your list. And if anybody reads all the way through this you get extra points! Gold Stars!

What a great reaction! I love how you break it all down. I have a humble request, for what in my opinion is one of the greatest bands, and vocalists of our time. The band is called Sleep Token. They don't have a bad song IMO, and they are so quite diverse in every song. I must warn you, to prepare your emotions, because they have a way of pulling real feelings out of their music. A good start may be " Alkaline" " Take Me Back to Eden" or " Atlantic". Another bonus is, Sleep Token fans actually look for new reactions to their songs, and you should find a few new followers. Sorry for the long message, but have a great day! And I look forward to your analysis!

He did not invite his wife Courtney Love to this show. He had all of his closest friends sitting in the front row. He and Courtney were famously headed towards divorce at the time of this show. It is believed that this was directed at her. Kurt tragically passed about 6 months after this performance and would go on to play this song last at many of the final concerts of his life.

He played this song with Courtney Love on scene with him together before.. He sang this song with Mark Lanegan in 1990, I'm not sure he even knew Courtney Love at this point in time, but for sure this was 2 or 3 years before marry her. Ockham razor, he liked this song wich by the way suited nicely an acoustic set (a lot of Nirvana's song were not in this case) so they played it. Was he thinking of his futur-ex wife while performing the song? May be, only he knew, but I don't this we can make a link for the choice of the song and his relationship.

I was about 12 years old when I first heard this song and I thought this man was crazy and I wanted in a band where we could scream like that... Because it sounded cool. Now at 40 years old, I feel bad for this young man since I can see the pain in his face and I can hear the despair in his voice. As he's screaming in the end, it looks just like a discharge of emotions. I'm pretty sure I heard he used to cry sometimes after shows.

"It might be nice to eventually start playing acoustic guitars, and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter. Rather than a 'Grunge Rocker you know?' Then one day I may be able to take advantage of that when I'm older, and sit down in a chair, and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something and it won't be thought of as a big joke" -Kurt Cobain 1993, a couple months before this.
