Keanu Reeves' real best friend, River Phoenix, died right before filming was supposed to begin. They graciously pushed back filming so Keanu could mourn. He said that "Speed" really helped him get out all his emotions, which the scene after he's told Harry died becomes so much more realistic after I heard about his real life tragedy. Also, during his acting days he was always a wonderful actor, especially as the main bad guy. RIP Dennis Hopper!
In another universe, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves dated, got married, and became a Hollywood power couple with five children. I wish to live in that universe.
Both Keanu and Sandra have retrospectively admitted they had a crush on the other but neither acted on it. Damn shame, that would have been an amazing Hollywood power couple
I mean they had another shot with each other. They were also in the Lake House with each other. Decent movie btw. I don't know if both were single at that time though.
@leob4403 nah he's a proper dirty man. He's given an interview about his ideal day and man's talking about having sex flippin' 7-8 times a day 😄 talk about rich ppl problems I don't have that kind of spare time!🤣
@@surrealparadox395 she was married to Jesse James, a tall biker guy that was screwing all sorts of chicks and cheating on her in the backroom at his bike shop. Keanu doesn't give me that type of vibe but I might be wrong
I met Keanu 14 years ago while visiting my old school. Turns out we attended the same Canadian school (12 years apart) for grades 7 & 8 . I got to chat with him for a time and he is incredibly down to earth and sweet. We travelled on the same bus and train just chatting like regular folks while the other riders were silently freaking out at the sight of him. He's just a smashing gent!
My dad met him at a supermarket in L.A. He had a big beard and long hair so nobody recognized him but my dad knew it was him and they shook hands. Great guy.
@@jamesfrench7299most of the time it is a reposit. Meaning you pay an extra amount and get that back when returning the cans/bottles. It is a motivation to get you to return the recycable stuff. The 10 cents you get back for small and bigger bottles are the 10 cents you payed extra. In Finland you most likely pay 40 cents extra for the bigger bottles (and get it back when returning)
True true. I would consider Speed, Die Hard, and The Rock the holy trinity of action films of that era. If you can think of one more standalone good one we could make it a "Rushmore".
@@goeltrolden That's what I mean by "standalone" even though there might be successful sequels, the first is vastly considered the best. Maybe "self-contained" would be a better descriptor. None of the movies I mentioned are dependent on any sequel.
I haven't commented on a video in over a decade. I'm logging in to say that "This movie has layers and layers! It's a beautiful American Lasagna of twists!" Is possibly the best sentence ever composed. You two are a network quality show. Gogglebox WISHES it was this
Some states, including California, have a can deposit. When you buy a can of soda/beer, you pay an extra 5 to 10 cents. So, people collect or save empties to return to the store to collect that deposit back. That’s why the lady had the cans in the stroller/buggy. The program encourages recycling and is quite effective.
They also have recycling centers where you get paid by the weight of the cans. Which would explain why she had so many. Many homeless people collect their cans in shopping carts and baby buggies.
@@lilithofnod Yeah it’s done many different ways. Here in Michigan, we have bottle return machines where you insert cans, it crushes them and counts them up, then prints out a receipt that you can cash at the cash register in the store.
Keanu Reeves breaking the glass on the bus door in the beginning of the bus chase was an accident, but director Jan de Bont liked its effect and it was left in the final cut. And Sandra Bullock actually learned to drive a bus for the film, passing her test on her first attempt.
@@leob4403 It's not the automatic that's the problem. Rather just piloting it thru traffic. For someone used to cars, to drive something so long with the steer tires behind you. Not everyone can adapt so easily.
I’m nostalgically remembering watching this 28 years ago on late night tv with the sound turned right down and one eye on the hallway to my parents bedroom.
Keenua and Sandra Bullock are like Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. They just have that friendship that love for each other. This was the first movie I’ve seen with Keanue when I was 10
Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves have never dated, but they are close friends and have remained supportive of each other over the years: The two actors first worked together in Speed. They have expressed their fondness for each other in interviews and public appearances. In 2019, Reeves appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and revealed that he had a crush on Bullock, which she had previously admitted to on the show. They have remained close friends and have expressed a desire to work together again. In 2023, Bullock's partner of eight years, Bryan Randall, died from ALS. Reeves was reportedly there for her as a shoulder to cry on.
yes, dye packs are a real thing Hannah 💕 they mark the money and hopefully the person with a dye that is very very difficult if not impossible to get off 😃
The bomb on the bus is C4, which is extremely stable and is why it’s used in the first place. It takes an electrical charge to detonate it. You can beat it with hammers, throw it off a cliff, play baseball with it and it won’t explode. The right voltage sent through it is what it takes.
You're almost half correct at least. You don't detonate C4 with electricity and "sending voltage through it" is a completely nonsensical statement. You need to use a detonator to detonate C4, that detonator may be ignited with electricity but it could also be ignited through mechanical force as it is far less stable than C4 (otherwise you wouldn't be able to ignite it with electricity). So if they did that bus jump with the bomb they are portraying in the movie it could very well have detonated by the landing.
@@bajjanitor exactly. I've seen it so many times in TV and movies where someone is trying to defuse a bomb, and while they're trying to figure out which wire to cut, right next to the wires are blasting caps that they could just pull out of the explosives and separate so that the detonation would be the equivalent of a few m80's.
@@srdgrant Haha yeah. That bomb at 7:02 is a perfect example of that. The detonator is 4 blasting caps that are barely inserted into the explosive material. A breeze would diffuse that bomb lol.
I was 13 when this came out, I begged my mom to buy me the VHS, I watched it over and over again, and I had the movie poster of Keanu in my bedroom. Loved this reaction ❤
I also owned this movie on VHS and watched it constantly. The difference is that my parents took me to see this movie in the theaters. As the elevator was falling, the film reel burned, and we were sent home with free passes to see another movie. Even so, my dad was so pissed off that he paid to see 10 minutes of a movie that he bought the VHS tape. We recorded most movies off of TV and rented the rest, so he REALLY wanted to see Speed.
This movie was so cool in those days. Keanu Reeves was known even well known he’d done “bills and Ted” and “point break”was in “Dracula” etc but this movie “Speed” is when Keanu Reeves became a “household name”. And Sandra Bullock for that matter. After this film everyone knew those 2 names.
Keanu Reeves is a living legend , he’s such an amazing person and actor , even before he became John Wick he still was in a lot of good movie’s and this one is a classic.
Nearly 40 years in the movie biz, most of that time a big star, and I have still never, ever, even once heard a bad story or unkind word about Keanu Reeves in person. Just the nicest, most decent guy. He's seriously in John Candy territory, and I don't take John Candy's name in vain.
as someone who is familiar with I.E.D's (Improvised Explosive Device) on a professional level and has worked along side the E.O.D unit Hannah going "Just cut all the wires at once" made me chuckle so bad hehehe
To clarify - It is very common for a lot of unfinished highway and other transportation lines to exist in LA. It is a massive city with work constantly ongoing. All of this is very plausible given their location in the US. Los Angeles, that’s why. ✌🏻
The production was really lucky to be able to take advantage of the 105 freeway and subway construction happening during filming. It really adds to the atmosphere of the film. (They didn't shoot in the actual subway construction zone, but it was happening during that time.)
I feel the same as you today today Hannah, i started crying over a ad and knew immediately the next 24-48 i wasnt going to be able to tolerate anything 😂
Long-story-short: BLESS you for picking the runner-up. THAT'S why I subscribed. Polls aren't always on the money and you know that. Fantastic watchalong with you two on this ride! You absolutely need to watch the sequel, The Lake House. Sandra's character is constantly moving two years ahead of Keanu's, how do they meet and fall in love? Pop Quiz: How do they meet and fall in love? 😂😂😂
Agreed. Also, most films nowadays seem to be so up their own arse thinking they're smarter than they are. There's no charm to them anymore. Just pretentiousness. And too many bastard slow motion shots too.
I saw this in theatres when I was in high school. Despite the fact that I'd been floating in my friends pool all day and had the most itchy sunburn... loved it. After all these years it seems I still do. Brava!
36:00 Ash is correct about that; When bank tellers are robbed, they sneak in ink packs with the cash. Then, when jostled enough, the ink packs explode. The ink is so hard to wash off, it can’t get washed off the money, making it useless to the thief, but the treasury can get the ink off, once the money is recovered.
Great reaction, guys! Thank you! Back in the 90’s, not only the movies were great, but life in general. I think we’ll have those good times back … some great people seem to be taking care of that. Ash, you’re my only choice to send them my support and my congratulations when you have the chance (you’re too good at symbolism to not figure out what I meant). Looking forward to your next reaction. Salutations from a Romanian brother …
From Hannah nonchalantly popping Ash's pimples to putting her fingers up her nose she is exhibiting a high level of genius in preventing fans from coming up to her wanting to shake her hand without downright alienating them by instead outright refusing to shake their hands. Effing BRILLIANT!
I feel like Ash is a little brother. The intentional instigating of Hannah definitely gives little brother vibes. My hubby is a little brother and he refuses to NOT bother and pester me 😂😂😂
@@AyushSharma-yf3quI think the OP meant Ash is a little brother to his siblings…not that he’s a little brother to Hannah. And I want my husband to be a husband to me not my father😂
Fun fact about that opening bus explosion - a little old lady wandered onto set and mistook the bomb bus for her actual bus and BOARDED it. She was running after it because she thought she missed her bus, ran straight past the PAs and jumped on while the thing had already started moving. Luckily the guy with his finger on the button noticed in time before she was blown to pieces. 😳
Normally I am anti-caring about Hollywood romance, but I always get a little Aww for the missed connection in this movie where both Sandra and Keanu confessed to having had a big crush on each other but not having gone for it. Seems like it would have been a sweet wholesome match 😝
I worked with Glenn Plummer a few years ago. Glenn, was the guy in the Jaguar that Keanu took over. Glenn, was so amazing and down to. He is such a great guy. I absolutely love this film
The "librarian b*tch" was played by the great Beth Grant. She's a wonderful character actress that has been in many movies and shows. Fans of the US version of the Office best know her as Dwight's date in the classic episode "Dinner Party."
Great reaction! Thanks to both of you.😊 One of my favorite movies. Watched it many times and I had the same feeling. The many different scenes/layers always make me feel like the movie never ends. That's great.
A third "Die Hard" movie was meant to be set on a cruise ship. The movie "Under Siege" came out and was being called "Die Hard on a battleship," and that kind of stifled that idea, along with a bunch of other movies being called "Die Hard on a _________". That led to the third Die Hard being completely different.
One of the things I found really interesting about this film was completely invested I was in the other passengers on the bus...the elderly couple, the business woman, the lady with the glasses, the teens at the back. I wanted to know all about them and I was praying they all made it through!
When people say "they don't make'em like this anymore," Speed is what they're thinking of. It's such a simple, unpretentious film... but it is executed SO, SO well.
Yall need bomb education. Lol. Jack couldn't shoot Dennis Hoper in the beginning because he is holding a 'Dead man's Switch". If he is shot, he releases switch and Jack dies with Dennis and Harry.
This is the same filmmaker who made Twister. They might be cheesy in a way, but these 90s action films were all very freaking exciting and fun to watch. There's a reason that they are repeats on the "favorite to re-watch" circuit for a lot of people.
They lost 7 cameras the first time they did the bus jumping the freeway stunt, it didn't get enough "speed" and dropped straight on them. the director swore everyone to secrecy cause he knew they'd get told it would be cgi"d instead:and he was determined to have all practical effects, fortunately they absolutely nailed it the second time. The movie just celebrated its 30th anniversary last week with a screening & a Q&A with Sandra, Keanu and the director Jan. It's on RU-vid and very much worth a watch. Enjoy both your channels quite a bit. Thanks for all the laughter. ✌️🫶🏻
Sandra and Keanu in this movie are my favorite!!! I loved this movie since I was a kid. I loved watching their separate interviews both saying they had a crush on each other.
It so funny & coincidental because in 2020 the Sonic The Hedgehog movie came out & there’s a scene where the couple are watching Speed and Sonic is watching through the window. And now here we are 4 years later into the third movie & the star of Speed Keanu Reeves is a part of Sonic 3 playing as Shadow The Hedgehog. One hell of a coincidence!
@@adzthesaint no the colored wiring is movie stuff for simplicity, in reality bombs especially homemade are made to trick anyone trying to disarm it and you only need the smallest of current to detonate. That’s why they use x ray usually to see its mechanism but if they don’t know for sure that’s why they go for detonating it where it is safely, it can even be rigged so that it takes multiple wires correctly cut to disarm it but no one would know that but the maker.
I remember hearing they were using the unfinished 105 freeway for the filming of this movie. That was a small part of the reason I went to see the movie. Then I fell in love with it. ❤
Others may have said already, but I'm pretty sure the woman with the carriage full of cans was collecting them to turn in for their deposit. I don't know if they do this in the UK, but in most US states you can turn in certain cans and bottles for a few cents each. It's a measure that is intended to cut down on litter and encourage recycling.
Love you guys! New subscriber. I'll be on the Patreon soon. The first thing I did when I heard you talking about great 90's movies was see if you'd watched "True Lies".... one of the best. Anyway keep up the good work! Highly recomend Jurassic Park, the first one.
Wow honestly, props to you guys for calling foul on the bus jump scene because of the impact on the explosive rather than just commenting on how unlikely it is that a city bus could ever make that kind of jump to begin with. I've never heard anyone else mention how the bomb probably should've detonated with that incredible impact, so good job for being uniquely observant! Fantastic reaction all the way around! *Edit: Also, food for thought, but if you consider the cost of the bus, an airplane, several civilian vehicles, city highway repair, police equipment and personnel, ect ect, the expense of the rescue FAR exceeds the ransom demand lol.
@@richcheckmaker Fair enough, I'm definitely not an explosives expert. Still can't expect jostling an armed C4 pack to be considered exactly "safe" but your point is taken.
