I used to not like how quickly everything went to hell in this movie and how quickly everyone picked sides, but then I lived through the last 5 years and I now feel like I owe Stephen King and Frank Darabont an apology.

Moral of the story? Hope is what makes us better people: as people lost hope in the store everyone became worse than the monsters outside... once the dad lost hope he did became the monster that killed his kid.

I wouldn’t say every Hollywood movie has happy endings. Try some A24 horror films they have some dark endings almost dark fairy tale like even. But I will say that “the Mist” has one of the Bleakest endings I’ve ever seen. As others have mentioned a lot of horror movies don’t have happy endings BUT not many horror movies are this fucking bleak so it does stand out in that regard.

I would argue it's more of a *message* to the audience, rather than a nihilistic ending. Throughout the entire movie, the audience was feeling almost empowered, knowing that they were on the side of "the smart people" and that they would never go crazy like the nutjobs. The ending was the writers saying "Nonono, all it takes is a moment. You're not immune to panic."

“Shut up, you miserable buzzard! Stoning people who piss you off is perfectly okay. They do it in the Bible, don't they? And I got lots of peas!” ... Love it! 😂👍👍 The point of the ending is, even if I disagree with it: Never lose hope and fight on to the very last second. It is delivered in a more brutal way than if they had done that and survived, but that is what makes the ending so great: People ignore fairytale endings that have becomes cliché. This rubs it in your face in an ugly way and you can’t ignore it. Masterful!

I take the ending to mean, “Never give up hope. No matter how bad things look, you never know if help might be right around the corner.” When you think of it that way the ending could be seen as a very dark way to express a very hopeful and beautiful message. I might be reading into it because I’m a therapist, but I could see it as a lesson against suicide. Never give up hope because you never know. Btw, my favorite monster is the behemoth at the end

@@JonathonTheAsshole That’s a popular interpretation based on Mrs. Carmody's rhetoric, and I can’t altogether exclude that. However, I don’t personally hold that interpretation based on how I perceive the main theme. "The story is less about the monsters outside than about the monsters inside, the people you're stuck with, your friends and neighbors breaking under the strain." - Darabont Carmody was a fanatic that should be disregarded. I see the situation not as the wrath of a god that demands human sacrifice but more of a commentary on humanity living within an ‘absurd’ world.

Notice the mother who ran in to the mist to get to her children not only lived but got to her kids and both kids survived. Humanity survives by adapting and struggling, and when necessary, relying on hope.

One of the best stephen king films. Favorite aspect of the story is the realization that humans have the potential to be much worse than any cthulhu-type monsters or demons. It took that woman a day to rile those people up into a frenzy and start resorting to human sacrafices. I'll give you that it's a crazy situation, but the clear headed people in that store all decided they would rather deal with cthulhu, massive crabs and demon spiders than stay and deal with the REAL monsters. The fear driven fanatics. Absolutely terrifying.

Except there were lots of people who left (like the neighbor's group) who all died as far as we know. That lady didn't live because she had hope... she just got lucky. Same as the people left behind in the store (especially after we see the spiders who infested the pharmacy next door- presumably if they'd decided to go for the store instead of the pharmacy all those people would have died instead)

I've thought that too that the moral is not to give up hope until the very end but I didn't think about that with the mother and her kids, she really did keep going, and considering where she came from you can tell she went FAR for her kids and didn't give up. Really great read there.

Jeffrey DeMunn, who played Dale on TWD, is also in The Shawshank Redemption as the prosecuter at the beginning. Also he was in The Green Mile. All Frank Darabont.

Woof I remember when I saw this in theaters. It was filmed not too far from here and that ending… it’s the most gut wrenching ending I think I have seen in any movie. It’s funny cause Frank Darabont also changed another one of Stephen King’s endings with his adaptation of The Shawshank Redemption (with happier results). Personally I think Darabont really knows how to do a king film.

Lets not forget the mastepiece that is The Green Mile. Darabont is the OG of adapting King. But Mike Flannagan is quickly challenging that crown, with Geral'd Game, Doctor Sleep and the upcoming Dark Tower show for Amazon.

I accidentally took my 5 year old nephew to see Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I don't know much about computers, so I didn't look up the movie beforehand. Let's just say I'm still allowed to take him to sports and the zoo, but never the movies again. Ha ha.

I just re-watched this last night on Netflix with my son. 2nd time for both of us. I read the story in the 80's. I think of King's ending as a cliff hanger. They drove off into the mist, encountered creatures but had no contact and we got no resolution. This ending is horrifying, but better. Did anyone notice as we did this time that the first woman to leave the store begging for an escort was on the military transport with her two kids? Great reaction guys "He made it half way back" 🤣.

@@classiclife7204 well it was. Jack torrance in the book was a recovering alcoholic who genuinely loved his family and was trying desperately hard to be a better husband and father. The overlook played on his fears, insecurities, and childhood trauma to get him to a place where he would be capable of murder and then gave him an excuse to do it. In the film i can't tell whether its jack nicholson's performance or kubrick's writing but jack comes off as capable of murder from the outset and the hotel just gives him an excuse. King's problem with the movie was that it eliminated the complexity of jack torrance to make him a straight up monster when he was always just another victim.

@@justarandomveryintelligent8934 Well, I won't argue in-depth here, but I thought book-Jack was worse than movie-Jack. I mean, at least movie-Jack wasn't involved in an unreported, probably fatal DUI, and, in a separate incident, didn't smash a teenager's head on the pavement. But I respect your opinion, and yeah, you're right, Nicholson hates his family, especially his wife, which I personally found more frightening and realistic. In the novel, King spends maybe too much time trying to make us sympathetic to a pretty nasty piece of work.

Ooofff this is a brutal movie. I love how in the grocery store, society and humanity is portrayed as an incredibly fragile thing which is scarier than the monsters (a theme Darabont stretched further in Walking Dead). That being said, the spiders are soooooo awful!

The quick forming of factions within the group has been seen in real life over the last few years. But in story-telling, it reminds me of the episode "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" from the original Twilight Zone. If you haven't seen it, it's a great episode along the same lines.

@BattleAngelFan this movie is about realism, psychological most humans would of killed themselves in this situation. Car was on empty no sign of a way out. No food any monsters outside. They were stranded. Hope is only good based on luck. Am not saying that I agree he should of killed everyone and himself but I understand why he would and why Many would perfectly natural. Fear is natural instinct. I would of waited into I ran out of food maybe a day or more then shot them all when a monster actually approached the vehicle. He did the deed to early but we can blame that on the movie since the movie can extent its own time limit.

Thomas Janes characters logical thinking served him well all the way up until the end. Most people would have made the same choices he did and given what he knew, he was doing them a kindness. I loved the ending, and made me think alot more then if the mist just went away.

The real monster of the mist is fear itself, and how it drives people to do monstrous things in dire situations. Whenever we are scared of something, much of fear is the anticipation of a thing not the actual thing itself. When David acts on an anticipated fear, he commits a monstrous act. Darabont's ending confirms that David really didn't have anything to be afraid of, and what really kills his family is himself when he's scared. The idea of fear of unknown ramifications driving people to do monstrous things is also represented in Carmody's cult.

I'm sorry but this is a frankly ridiculous take on the movie. David DID have something to be afraid of- the actual physical monsters from another world who were violently attacking and killing people. He didn't kill his family... he killed his son. His wife was killed by those very real, literal monsters and he lived. Through sheer dumb luck (or bad luck, depending on how you look at it) And the fact his act of killing his son is monstrous is only dumb to the dumb luck that the calvary rolled in immediately afterward. If he'd refrained and instead the movie ended with him watching those spiders paralyze his still-alive son & use his body to incubate their eggs- it's his restraint that would have been monstrous.

@@sussychachi The problem with waiting is that often these creatures strike so quickly, there's no guarantee you'd actually have time to mercy kill your kid before they got snatched away from you by tentacles or before you were paralyzed/incapacitated by acid webbing, etc.

Those are all great but, although its old, I think Storm of The Century is still the best production of King's novel adaptation to date... (with very unexpected ending as well) and not many knows about it since its divided into 3 parts and total length is around 4 hours. Also the classic flicks like The Stand, Pet Cemetery and Christine as well.

why the ending is great as it pertains to the theme of the film; Throughout the movie runtime we see what unquenching faith does to the group, as they become divided by religious fervor, and almost swallowed by it. The message seems to be that you shouldn't be blinded by faith, or it'll be your doom. But then we see what no hope or faith at all does to our last little group of survivors..., ultimately bringing it back to the message of a little faith is a good thing. Salvation might just be just around the corner, even if you don't believe. (tl;dr; Don't be an extremist)

I like to go with the Lovecraft interpretation of a story like this. "What's the point of an ending like this?" the wife asks. Lovecraft would say there is no point. Humanity is insignificant and just a plaything for the greater cosmic forces out there, which contrary to most religions, isn't kind or benevolent. Lovecraft existed in a dark place.

As Stephen King himself pointed out; "I wish I'd think of it myself" Because yeah, its a rather obvious 'ending', perfectly aligned with the theme of the story. Frank Darabont did a marvellous job, as he always does.

I usually refrain from using the term faith, since as it applies to belief systems, it's a belief maintained for no reason and against all reason... I'd say one should maintain hope, more than faith. However, people shouldn't let reason give way to hope or faith. The problem is, people will make up whatever they want to cope with something, it's human nature unfortunately, we try to explain away anything we don't understand, rather than just accepting that we don't know something.

The moral, don’t let fear control your lite. When “Carol” asked for help, no one stood up to help her because they were afraid. Even those who didn’t believe there was anything out there, we’re afraid. Carole, not her name on the show but, pushed past her fear to save her kids and anyone who went with her, anyone who put their basic humanity in front of their fear would have probably survived too.

I love the ending of this movie because it affirms my belief that you should never give up hope. Just hang in there a little bit longer, you never know how things might suddenly change.

@@aj897 to be fair, most of us who have seen the film and love the ending are like that. There’s a weird sense of glee you feel when you inflict that ending on a friend or a loved one, and you watch them go through the same rollercoaster of emotions you did. I also find Mrs. M’s response immediately after watching the film to be pretty normal. It’s not until you sit with the film for a little bit afterwards that you realise how “good” it is. The initial shock and trauma of it is just so overwhelming to start with that it’s hard to analyse rationally. It was such a work a genius, and frankly we, the audience occasionally need a gut punch like this movie to wake us up and realise how fragile the strappings of civilised society really are.

First time I saw this movie was on a night shift at my security job on my laptop, years ago. And the ending, where the tank comes rolling out right after he killed everyone, said out loud "ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME"!!!!!???? That man is never going to be right, he's gone, his mind will never recover

For starters: can we give a standing ovation for Thomas Jane' performance in this movie first? Thank you. Now, the book ending is basically they travel through the mist, refilling the car tank at every gas station where this was possible, sleeping in abandoned motels and such, and they think they hear a radio transmission for a direction to go. I like it, it's one of the better Stephen King endings. ... but I LOVE the ending of this movie since the first time I saw it. I was like "Will you go there? You'll fucking dare go there? WTF? You are going there!?! YOU FN WENT THERE??!!!" I was in awe. Then took my then not exactly yet girlfriend to see the movie. She loved it even more. We were in a 5 years relationship after, still hear from each other from time to time. You can say that this was the movie that brought us together, as she pretty much said "If this didn't ended like it did, I think I would slap you for making me watching it". She was deep into the funeral doom metal back than and was studying animation here, thus was watching all sorts of bizarre stuff in her cinematography classes. We ended up rewatching it at least couple of more times after (basically each and every time it came on TV and we managed to catch it). Blessed years. 🥲

As you stated the ending of the novella is ambiguous. Instead of running out of gas the group bunkers down in a Howard Johnson while David writes down the preceding events of the mist on a notepad before leaving it on the front desk of the Hotel. Darabont's ending was such a gut punch for the audience regardless if you've read the story or not. I remember feeling this chronic sense of emptiness as the film drew to a close, I just sat in the dark and staring blankly at the screen as the credits rolled. Great experience honestly

I almost banged my fists on the chair while I was seeing this in theaters and I had the same reaction as him in the ending, I even bawled my eyes out and I ALMOST yelled at the theater like him as well. lol.

I *really* appreciate Mr. not saying anything- warning Mrs. or making comments to distract from what she saw/felt first- even when she asked. I don't understand how Mr. was able to eat popcorn for any length of time because I had a lump in my throat from go and it only got worse the further along it went- and this is like the 4th reaction to this movie I watched today, lol. I saw it in the theater and cried for about half an hour, I was a newer mom at the time. Destroyed.

Right after this film Darabont began work on The Walking Dead. You'll notice three actors this film (the man runs into store saying "there's something tn the mist" played dale, the woman main character becomes attached to at store played Andrea and woman who asks for someone to see her home is carol).

The whole point and moral of the ending is: Don't ever make assertions about the unknown. When people make assertions about the unknown they make rash conclusions and make rash decisions, only to find devastation because of them.

I will never shy away from saying how effective I think that ending is. It really shows how important it is to have hope when you see someone lose all of theirs too soon.

That ending was so controversial when it came out i was kinda expecting that when I first saw it in theaters….but i love the ending the movie had, just another way of saying never give up cause look what could possibly happen if you do….it was a nice twist I didn’t read the book until after i saw the movie, were that ending in the book would be way more expected by people for this kinda film, but the way they switched it up made it feel different for once for a movie

The Mist was my first introduction to Stephen King when I was 10 years old... I had never read anything like it before and became an instant fan, (he's still my #1 fave author 35 years later). The first time I saw this film, I was TICKED at the ending... Now, I sorta appreciate it, as it really does leave me with the same feeling that many other SK novels have given me, so that's something

I saw this in the theater. The atmosphere was eerie. There was just shocked silence from the ending. No one said a word on the way out. Just silence.

I believe, actually, the monsters were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, but nothing of his was actually used. These creatures actually come from a space between dimensions in Stephen King's lore. He made a multiverse and...easiest way I can explain is if you Imagine bubble wrap, each bubble is a universe and these creatures come from the space between the bubbles. There were also actually a few creatures in the novella that were not used in the movie. One being a giant 30ft green kite-like creature that flew overhead.

nobody would remember this movie if it ended another way. this ending punches you in the gut and leaves you absolutely devastated. I would say, the moral is to never lose hope. It's always the most dark before dawn. this movie is so incredible and I will never forget it simply because of that ending. just incredible!

39:00 I guess this was his point, having the most gut-wrenching ending possible. This is also the reason why it's so memorable and a favourite for a lot of people. You don't get many movies with such downer-endings. I also have the special edition, on which they have a black&white version, which adds to the atmosphere in my opinion. Marcia Gay Harden character is also one of my most hated characters in movies, very well played by her.
