Agreeing with those saying this is the best Eastwood Western. Unforgiven close second

I'll join with the others here who put Josie Wales in the top spot of Clint westerns. There's great complexity to this one. It deals with a greater range of issues, and they're all dealt with in an interesting, thoughtful way. It doesn't have the top cast or cinematographer that Unforgiven had, but Clint was very inspired by the book this movie is based on. I think it's his most heartfelt western.

The actor that plays Ten Bears is Will Sampson. I have seen his height listed anywhere from 6' 5" to 6' 7"! He also played " Chief " in " One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest"! Boston Celtics Hall of Fame center Robert Parrish got nicknamed The Chief by his teammates because of his stoic demeanor!

@@IrishGuyReacts He did. It was one of his first. A year before I had seen Kentucky Fried Movie. I'm not sure it will have aged well (lol), but at the time it TOTALLY cracked me up, and it was something really different, original, and outRAGeous! He was really a bright new talent. Another one way back then that I got a huge kick out of (but which was always under-appreciated, IMO) was Into the Night.

"Do you really think you can shoot all those men down before they shoot you? No, no, Mr. Josey Wales; there is such a thing in this country called justice!" "Well, Mr. Carpetbagger. We got somethin' in this territory called the Missouri boat ride." Fun Fact: This movie received high praise among Indian viewers for its non-stereotypical portrayal of Indians. DGA Hacks Fact: Philip Kaufman started to direct this movie, but was replaced by Clint Eastwood, which was a controversial move that prompted the Directors' Guild of America (D.G.A.) to institute a ban on any current cast or crew member replacing the director on a movie. A rule which has been called the "Eastwood Rule" ever since. Legendary Director Fact: Because of Chief Dan George's age, he would have trouble remembering his lines, so during takes, Clint Eastwood would begin to mouth his lines without realizing it and had to be told to stop because it would ruin the take. In a featurette on the DVD about making this movie, Eastwood says he'd have people drill Dan George on his lines, but when it came time to shoot the scene and since Chief George was a natural storyteller, he'd say: "Chief, just forget about the lines, tell me the story about the man who rode over the hill." Gun Enthusiast Fact: The Gatling guns shown during the massacre of the surrendering confederates are not Civil War-period versions of that weapon. The Model 1861 Gatling was a .58 caliber weapon firing from individually-loaded brass or steel chambers, which were fed into the receiver via a hopper or chute attached to the side of the gun's housing. As a result, the gun's rate of fire was significantly slower than is shown in the film. The guns shown in the movie were models of 1867 or later, which were chambered for fixed ammunition, usually 45/70 and fed through a stick magazine on the top of the weapon's receiver.

This is all based loosely on a chapter of the American Civil War that involved a very bloody and intense rivalry between Kansas and Missouri. Two neighboring states that chose different paths well before the Civil War and had horrible battles involving raiders and mercenaries and gangs. The reference to Redlegs here was just one point. The way the Union soldiers brutally executed the Missourians was another.

Missouri and Kansas are still talking about this shit. I took my daughter on a college tour in Kansas and they were bellyaching about the Border War and rebels burning Lawrence, Kansas. We will never get over the damn Civil War. It's like neither side can see there were atrocities on both sides.

My favorite Eastwood Western, precisely because it is so different from the rest. Much as I love Clint's Westerns, at a certain point there was a formulaic sameness to them. This was filled with wonderful surprises -- for example, Josey eschewing a shootout with Fletcher at the end. He doesn't even know that Fletcher was duped by the Union officer, but he declines vengeance in that instance. Instead, the peaceful resolution where he ends up establishing something like a commune. Lots of touches of humor, also.

Clint Eastwood's "non-western" films that are compelling are worthy of both viewing and praise are: 1) Escape from Alcatraz; 2) In The Line of Fire 3) Heartbreak Ridge 4) Kelly's Heroes 5) The Mule 6) Every Which Way But Loose 7) Absolute Power; and of course the Dirty Harry Series!

The best movie about this era is "Ride with the Devil" directed by Ang Lee. It stars Toby Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, Jeffrey Wright, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jim Caviezel , and Simon Baker. It may be hard to find since it was blackballed for not being politically correct!

One of my favorites to be honest and gets better with every viewing. The key theme is loss and renewal rather than revenge and Josie is an individual fearful after his wife and son's massacre to trust closeness with new relationships that appear seemingly sporadically but in the end are guideposts to that renewal. Just my thoughts.

Why? In the Civil War the North killed 50,000 women and children. The Hague came into existence in the late 1800s as a result of the North's atrocities during the civil war. They wonder why people in the south despised them for the next 100 years.

He has to be on the run, it was the Civil War, he couldn't fight the whole Yankee army, so getting away, was more important than revenge. I think its his finest movie ever aa per his direction of himself. People have to understand the Civil War better to grasp it all tbh.

@@IrishGuyReacts Just pointing out the obvious to help the big picture. When I saw this as a kid in theatres, I don't know why, but I thought him spitting on that dog was the funniest shyt I had ever seen, I guess because I had an old dog like than named Brownie, I would come home all sad or crying about something as a 12 year old and old brownie would sit on the steps and lick my tears. I stayed out late shooting pool, well Snooker, parents let us run wild in the 70s. Heck, hardly no one shoots Snooker in the USA, but in my small town we had 7 tables, I started shooting 8 ball at 9, and by 10 I was playing Snooker, I entered a Tournament on Christmas at 12 yrs old, you had to draw "Partners" from a pill bottle (numbers) and I got Thomas, who was one of the best players, and he was like, hell I'm glad to get him, we won. I almost ran the whole table, only one person in our city had ever done that. I miscued with only the number balls left on the spots and it would have been an easy run out. BUT....we only use 10 red balls, not 15. I still remember how happy I was to win 200 dollars, we were dirt poor. Heck, I met Minnesota Fats in 1980 at a tourney, I was very good, but too interested in women and partying. Well, I know you cats play Snooker a lot over in the UK. Don't even know why I added that in. HEY....maybe try the Paul Newman film about *The Hustler* 🤣 P.S. Tell your Girl Friend I enjoyed her being along for the ride.

The history explains this in such depth. Obviously this could never be made today because nobody from the Confederacy would ever be seen as any way justified. But 94% of those who fought for the South never owned a slave. Remember this was only a couple generations after the Union was formed by individual states Voluntarily joining the Union and they thought they had a right to "unjoin" if you asked someone from back then where they were from they would all say "Virginia" or "Ohio" or their state. Nobody outside high federal office thought of themselves as American unless they traveled abroad

24 min mark - "not sure I buy the connection between the two" - Eastwood (very good actor - and had earned his name by then), often had the clout to demand movie directors/producers to hire his girlfriend Sandra Locke - who is in several Eastwood movies. She is pretty, but not a good actress - no shade upon her as a person, just some shade upon her per her craft. Just sayin. I think its cool that Eastwood used his fam/influence to include his girlfriend - that proves he was a good boyfriend to Sandra - and its not like Locke can't act, she just not all that good IMO.
