There was a great story surrounding the fight between Hector and Achilles. They didn’t use stunt doubles, Eric Bana and Brad Pitt did the whole thing themselves and they had an agreement. If they hit each other by accident they’d pay each other money, $50 dollars for a light hit $100 for a heavy hit. By the end of it Pitt had paid out $750 dollars while Bana didn’t lose a cent.
@speedracer2008
@speedracer2008 Год назад
Not only that, but Brad Pitt actually hurt his Achilles heel (haha) while rehearsing the fight scene. Then, a few days later, Hurricane Marty struck the coast of Mexico, where they were filming, boring a hole through the set for the wall of Troy. These issues set production back several months, meaning that the Achilles vs. Hector scene, which was the last scene to be shot and originally supposed to be shot in September 2003, wasn’t shot until December of that year.

"Imagine if the horse was too big for the gate." If memory serves; in the Iliad they actually did. The wooden horse was too big to fit through Troja's gate, so the Trojans in their eagerness of 'victory' actually tore down parts of the fortifications to get it inside - which of course only made it easier for the Greeks to storm the city. Not sure if that was part of Odysseus plan, but with him you can't rule it out, either.

Instead of Achilles having the one weak spot being his heel, it shows him get shot many times, but his heel was the only arrow he didn't pull out so the legend of the "Achilles heel" is painted as a misunderstanding of what happened. Hector is the only one with common sense. Priam is a good person with good hearth but he does terrible mistakes as a king during the war. Not sending back Helen as soon as he saw her with his son for example. Loved the reaction!! On the calling them heroes issue: the word has a different meaning today than it did back then. In greek it meant protector or defender. So when we speak of Archilles as a hero, we should see it as it was in ancient times when the epic was written. Also yes, Helen and Menelaos do return to Sparta together. Agamemnon does not die in Troy, but is killed by his wife Clytemnestra (Helen's half-sister) in order to avenge Agamemnon killing their daugther in order to get to Troy.

29:46 James is right. Achilles and Briseis didn't really have a romance like that. She was a spoil of war given to Achilles and while his falling out with Agamemnon did happen because he took her back from him, Achilles took such offense not because he deeply cared for Briseis but because withdrawing a spoil of war after it has been given to a warrior is seen as an insult and humiliating (and Achilles is pretty big on his honor and such, so he of all people took it extra hard). Achilles does have a canonical romantic relationship in the Iliad, but it's with Patroclus- who no, is not supposed to be his "cousin". Hollywood just pulled a "no homo" and did the classic "oh these two characters of the same sex are so close because they are family actually". I love the original text and these kinds of departures- like completely writing the gods out of the story when they were such a central part of it plot-wise and thematically, as well as perpetuating the idea that Helen consensually went with Paris and is therefore equally culpable with her abductor for the bloodshed- along with some poor casting decisions in my opinion, piss me off far more than they should. No matter how well-made this movie is and the few things it got right, I will always see it as less interesting fan-fiction of the original story. It's a good movie, but a bad adaptation of the Iliad. EDIT: and OMG don't get me started on the writers giving Paris a heroic moment in the end and a bow just because Orlando Bloom and Legolas and shit. Paris is meant to be a spineless coward, let him be a spineless coward! He doesn't need a redemption arc! He isn't meant to be a hero! That's the whole point!

Long but bear with me. I LOVE this film. It's my guilty favorite. The Iliad itself is a tale of brutality and futility of war. Highlighting the "glory" we love to see and hear as well as the "reality" of war and loss. Does this movie follow the epic? No. Is it still amazing? Absolutely! When I saw this growing up I thought Achilles amazing his goal for immortality was something to aspire to. In a way it still is. But now that I'm older and wiser I see that Hector is the true hero and champion. Unlike the legendary warrior Achilles, Hector was a man. A good man. A legend not because we wanted to be and he never saw to put himself on a pedestal... But he was placed there by all the people who respected and loved him. He was a good leader who cared for the people around him and his people. He was a loving father, a good son, a good brother and friend, devoted husband, respected leader, dutiful citizen, compassionate commander, and honorable yet humble man. He is THE person we aspire to be. While Achilles is a great warrior Hector is a true hero. Sadly, heroes are not protected and he faced his death with honor that even earned to respect of his killer. Good guy Hector. Be like Hector.

Tbh, Hector is not nearly as honorable/likeable in Iliad. The movie completely whitewashed him. In Iliad, he kills Patroclus fully aware that it is him, in a cowardly fashion, he strips him off his armour and wears it and tries to take his dead body to feed it to the dogs and desecrate it. He even brags about how he will do the same to Achilles. It is only thanks to a sucidal charge from the greeks that they managed to recover his body (returning without it to Achilles was a NO NO imo). This is why Achilles is so mad at him and why he desecrates Hector's body later. Also, when Hector goes to duel him, he has a change of heart and runs like a coward until he is exhausted. Point is that yeah..movie Hector is the perfect flawless hero. The actual Hector was as flawed as Achilles though.

@jovanjorgovan23
@jovanjorgovan23 3 года назад
Making them 'lovers' , which you imply, would make it LESS accurate since neither of the Epic Cycle poems, Iliad included, implies such relationship. Did you even read the Iliad btw? Also the movie describes events that are described in several Epic Cycle poems (Cypria, Aethiopis, Little Iliad, Iliou Persis (Sack of Troy), Nostoi...), not just Iliad. More importantly, by depicting a supposed historical event that inspired Iliad and other Epic Cycle poems, movie makers avoided the necessity to be ''Iliad accurate''.

I honestly would've preferred if they included the mother of Hector and Paris and Cassandra instead of the Briseides love story stuff. They could've kept her too, but the others were far more interesting and deeper characters. Rose Byrne could've played Cassandra who was the actual priestess of Apollo and cousin of the princes of Troy, the one who could foresee the future but was cursed.

Just fyi, the Medieval period took place between 500-1500 AD, the Trojan War took place sometime between 1260-1180 BC. For context, we are currently closer in time to the beginning of the Medieval period (1500 years ago) than the people alive during the Trojan War were, the Medieval period would have been about 1700 years in the future for them.

It’s based on writings from someone (from the Middle East, iirc) who spent time with the Vikings in like 8 or 900 AD. From what I remember, scholars think it was very exaggerated & that the person making the observations likely misunderstood/misinterpreted a lot of what he saw while living with them.

Troy was an absolutely awesome historical epic film, but it wasn't the only one to come out in 2004. There was another one that tried to do the same thing as Troy: Portray a central piece of human mythology as historical events that may have actually happened. But this film I honestly feel achieved that objective even BETTER than Troy did. The film in question is Jerry Bruckheimer's King Arthur, starring Clive Owen and Kiera Knightley. I sincerely hope you guys at White Noise Reacts will react to this film, because so far, I cannot find ANYONE who has done a reaction to that film. And that really should not be the case, because it really is one of the greatest on-screen adaptations of Arthurian Legend ever created (this is from someone who literally grew up with Arthurian mythology. I was introduced to it at age 3, and I've seen nearly every film adaptation of the story of King Arthur that has ever been made).

The Iliad,written by Homer is about the futility of war.That was the message Homer was trying to convey when he wrote it. Ask yourself,who really won this war.Troy destroed,the Greeks destroyed yrs later when the Dorians and the Sea Peoples destroyed most of the main Greek city states,incl the Mycaeneans,the Hittite empire was affected and on the verge of collapse.The only civilisation to survive intact was Egypt,and they made it by the skin of their teeth. That's what made the Trojan War so interesting.

Couple cool facts which may have been stated: 1) Patroclus May have been Achilles cousin/brother but most believe he was Achilles lover. 2) after Achilles killed hector he dragged his body around the city for 2 weeks shouting about how he killed him and how all the gods see hector for a coward 3) the coins on the eyes are for the boat man which in Ancient Greece it was the boat man who would bring you to the underworld to be judged if you didn’t have money you’d wander aimlessly. 4) it was said 2 boys who’s survived the fall of Troy would get into a boat and land in Italy, there they created a town called Rome. 5) Odysseus was said to be the son of Athena, and she gave him the idea for the horse. Poseidon being the creator of the horse took offense to this and caused his ship to go awry on his way home thus beginning the odyssey.

Exactly. I grew up watching the original and it was only fairly recently that I saw the extended version and this is one example where you really do see why they didn't release it as the main version, the music - as you say - is poorly done, particularly for the A v H fight, the added scenes didn't add anything, just dragged the thing out and slowed the pace, and even though I usually like gore the gorier battle scenes that were cut out of the original seemed out of place.

Taking an enemy as a slave wasn't just a show of dominance, the slaves were a representation of that winners honor, and when you take away those slaves your taking away that mans honor effectively disgracing them, in fact it was said in the Iliad as Achilles was talking to Patroclus he would not relent until Agamemnon returned the stolen honor, referring to Agamemnon having taken precious therefore taken his honor.

Doubtful that Achilles fell in love with Briseis. Historians believe if this battle had any root in reality, Achilles probably was romantic with Patroclus, which is why he demands to fight Hector after Hector killed Patroclus, and why he mistreated Hector's body so badly after killing him.

At the time tho, there wasn’t really romances of that sort. It was more blood brothers who slept together. It was a bond, but I think it’s unfair to say it was romantic. Spartans did a similar thing, but it was all about power and “teaching”. Definitely was not in any way romantic

I love the movie and its absolutely brilliant for armour styles, weapons and the triremes. Couple of inaccuracies that I can look past but a a few get to me. 1. Ajax - Strongest of the Greeks actually commits suicide because he didn't obtain Achilles' armour after his death. He killed a few livestock in his anger and as attonement for this he drove his sword into his neck 2. Agamemnon actually returned to Mycenae only to be killed by his wife, Clytemnestra since he sacrificed their daughter to Artemis so the Greeks could sail to Troy 3. Menelaus never died at Troy and sailed back to Sparta with Helen 4.They left out one of the most important parts of the whole story. Paris was out hunting and was led by Hermes to judge a competition to see who was the most beautiful goddess out of Hera, Aphrodite and Athena. Hera would make him king of all men, Athena offered him victories in war and Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world and Paris chose Aphrodite.
