This is my first time viewing the 1993 music biopic "What's love got to do with it" about the life of Tina Turner, starring Angela Basset and Laurence Fishburne. This video is intended to give my own personal review and is edited in such a format to abide by the copyright laws for fair use. I highly suggest you to have seen this movie before watching my review. Thank you, and I appreciate your interest in my channel.

In Tina’s last interview with a Swiss journalist, she was asked if there was anything she’d do different knowing what she knows now…she answered that she would’ve taken care of her high blood pressure diagnosis in her 20’s. Her last message to her fans was to please take high blood pressure seriously. Her death was ultimately due the fact she did not take high blood pressure medicine until it was too late…it had destroyed her kidneys, and she ultimately had a stroke. Her actual death was organ failure (kidneys)…she was on dialysis almost till the day she passed, but instead chose comfort for pain, and passed peacefully not long after…RIP MY QUEEN ❤

This is one of the greatest music biopics of all time. Fun facts: Laurence Fishburne turned down the role of Ike Turner five times. Halle Berry, Robin Givens, Pam Grier, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson & Vanessa Williams were all considered for the role of Tina Turner. Jenifer Lewis the actress who played Tina’s mom is only a year older than Angela Bassett. She always plays the mom in movies & shows.

Fact! She was in her 80’s when she passed, Did you also know that the real Tina Turner never seen the movie of herself of in what’s love got to do with it…In a interview with a reporter she was ask why she nevertheless seen it? and her respond was because she lived it.

In her second book My Love Story, she stated that she saw the movie in her hotel room while touring. She also stated she did not like the movie. She thought Ike and Tina's clothes were way over the top during that time period.

That small scene of the Hotel manager being kind and sweet trying to understand in seconds what was happening. So well delivered it makes anyone who's watching at least drop one tear. Great performance by that actor whose name I don't know. Tina said she wanted them to portray it exactly as it was because that man saved her life instead of acting like nothing was happening. Also she wanted them to show the Ramada Inn's name because she was so grateful to them for taking her in such difficult moment.

The hotel manager who was so kind and hospitable to Tina was named George. In real life, his name was O'Neal Compton. He died at the age of 68 in 2019.

7:00 Jennifer Lewis (aka the "Mother of Black Hollywood"). When asked about being type-casted, on (I believe) The Tonight Show, she broke into a comedic song about how "Black Don't Crack" (thereby, coining the phrase). I'm a huge fan of all three women (Turner, Lewis, Bassett) ❤❤

It was not Jennifer Lewis that coined that phase. It was around since the resort 70s. They myth was out was Lawanda page. I think she was the first to say it on TV and that was in 75.

Later, in 1993, Jennifer Lewis also appeared in Sister Act 2, as one of Whoopi Goldberg's backup singers. Plus, Ike and Tima's Proud Mary was part of the opening medley.

@9:15 the movie stated that Ike Turner was fliruting with a lot of women. Not only behind LorrIne's back But also, behind Tina's back the moment she and Ike got married. But according to other documentaries, they had only one son together. The other three sons they raised together were from previous relationships.

@@HabitualCinemaLawrence and Angela talked about that scene beforehand and Lawrence had them clear the set to make Angela more comfortable. Ike Turner actually accused Lawrence Fishburne of tarnishing his image, but later wanted to meet him. Of course Lawrence declined the meeting, but stayed professional by biting his tongue on how he really felt about Ike

There is a fundamental difference in how generations process information. Laurence Fishburne had nothing to feel guilty or remorseful of. He like Angela Bassett was an Actor/Actress playing a role. Nothing more, nothing less. No one was physically abused in the filming of the movie, only makeup, cosmetics, and good filming/editing. IKE may feel some type of way but Lawrence has no reason to feel anything other than I did a damn good job with this role if people felt I was responsible. Gotta learn to separate the actors from the roles they play. Also, unfortunately domestic violence is very common in many people's lives. Black people in lower income areas go through so many traumatizing events in our lives that we learn to poke fun at it as a coping mechanism. It's not HAHA! It's funny. It's that it's soo jarring that humor is the only way I know how to try to move past the trauma in the moment. And after this paragraph.. Good reaction, seriously.

Jenifer Lewis calls herself the "Mother of Hollywood." She's been everyone's mother...Tina Turner'/Angela Basset's mother in this movie, Lucky/Tupac's mom in Poetic Justice, Blue (Temptations), Mama Odie (Princess and the Frog), Anthony Curtis/Larenz Tate (Dead Presidents), Whitney Houston's mom (Preacher's Wife), Angela Basset's mother again in Meet the Browns... I'm sure there are more, but Jen Lewis is everyone's mom. My alter ego as I channel her when I'm sternly talking to my kids; I quote her movie lines so much in daily life.

I dont really like sweets." Without missing a beat, my friend's mom said: "Get out." and pointed to the door. 😂😂😂 She's really funny.

The are photos of Ike and Tina where you can clearly see bruising on her and the scene where they fight in the car, there is a picture of them in that same outfit looking a little frazzled. I’m amusing they may have fought prior to getting in the car and then the big fight happened in the car. It is so strange and so heart breaking to look back at the old photos and see the signs of abuse.

The time line is wrong her manager saw Roger Davies saw Tina's first concert in 1979 not in 1981. I feel for Tina. She wanted so bad for this movie to be truthful and in accordance to her book I Tina. Touchstone pictures and the director made amovie about Ike and Tina's was supposed to be not for what it really was. Both Ike and Tina have both stated that the rape scene never happened, the director Brian Gibson added that the rape scene into the movie. To me it sounds like Brian Gibson was while making this movie a disgusting director.

What Love Got To Do With is not based on truth it was based on what Ike and Tina's life should have been like according to the director at the time Brian Gibson. I enjoy reading I Tina and My Love Story. Brian Gibson ruined this movie by adding a rape scene and showing Ike and Tina recording Nut Bush in their home, which they never did, they recorded the song in Ike's studio Bolic Sound which was not shown in the movie. Also Tina had no script approval when it came time to make this movie. Some parts are true and lot of the movie is untruthful. Just please read I Tina and you will see a big I mean big difference in the I Tina and the movie.

Tina Turner admitted her self this this movie was overdramatic. Ike did not beat her the way that the movie described and he did not rape her. Ike Turner is one of the greatest musicians of all times and have the very first rock ‘n’ roll song in the history of the genre. It’s a shame what white media did to him.
