To think i wrote this so long ago and it still applies. Even after one day of morosely contemplating on the anime Your Lie In April is always at the forefront of my mind. I have always been a sculprious person and have watched dozens of animes but this particular anime really takes the cake of being able to convey deep messages and providing emotional music in a short span of time. I had grown so attached to the character of Kaori Miyazono. Her voice actor did an marvellous job conveying the vivacious yet stoic character, a person who is boisterous on the outside but deep inside is hiding up a storm. This is one of the most admirable trait to have in my book and she demonstrated it exceptionally well. Indubitably, this is one of the greatest anime i had come across in my journey. When first introduced i was almost duped by her amazing Facade but i always had Vestigal feeling increased overtime that she was not what she made out to be. Why was she crying in the beginning? Why did she stopped by at the hospital after episode 3? Why does she dawn a gloomy face when no one is around? There was always a capricious change in character which i just couldn't shake off from these subtle, redolent clues. After learning the truth at the end. It was especially poignant that she choose to be with the best friend of her childhood crush even though she did not want to be. Especially heartbreaking that she pulled through without a hinge knowing that he was right there. She really deserved better and i wanted her to be happy but she was struck down by a uncureable illness. Human life is so fragile. She was always upbeat but broke down in the arms of her lover after being strong all these time. She is truly sacrosanct, why are the good ones always the first to leave. I felt gyped that she was taken away after forming such a connection. She went against the common dogma and doctrine by playing her heart out, not worrying about the scores in the competition, in the end inspiring many people's lives. This anime made me put on my thinking cap more than i was comfortable with. I was vehemently against some of the relationships of the protagonist which is a Virtuoso and prodigy in the art of music and piano. But this came at a price, he was tragically beaten into submission and accepted the fact that by doing well he would be making his mother proud which was also clinclially ill. I loved the juxtaposition and nuance from being a perfect pitch prodigy to being a tone deaf adolescence. It showed the impact of his mother's death on him, impeaching his development and potential. No matter the reasoning i felt that the mother did him wrong, yes you may not have much time left and yes you want your child to succeed but at the result of beating him daily till bleeding? That is frankly ludicrous, Egregious and dreadful. The end doesn't justify the means and i am surprise that nature vs nurture did not kick in for the child and that he didn't grew to cause harm to others but much more passive. What a Tumultuous childhood he had but Kaori became his new light in his ever dark tunnel. She was his inspiration and they were perfect for one another. How i wished they lived happily ever after. I'll write till here for now, just had to get it off my chest, truly a masterpiece of an anime. Recommended violet evergarden next

This entire take is so spot on even though it was drafted way back when. The way they paced this anime is so well done and careful. The way they flipped back and forth between timelines like This Is Us while not losing the audience in all the details is an amazing feat. And the score simply elevates the emotionality of the story in ways that are inexpressible. I admittedly misunderstood Kaori's intentions with how pushy she seemed when I first started the series. But having the context of her racing against time itself and her long-time love for Kousei makes it all come together perfectly. Learning to truly live life to the fullest without holding back (and in her case, without apologies). That's another thing about this anime that was done well - its subtle foreshadowing the stirs up mystery and keeps you invested. But its done in a way that feels human and not necessarily melodramatic (though sometimes I felt Tsubaki kind of was lol I get her feelings at the same time) Exactly! When you finally crack open the facade and ambition, what's left is a broken girl that's scared to die with regrets. And when we feel like we finally know her its after she's already gone and we can't enjoy more time with her. Its just brutal seeing Kousei's sad, resigned smile at the end when he stands with Tsubaki and he's cognizant of the fact he will experience a Spring without Kaori. Never allowing the two to confess face to face or enjoy moments together as a couple. I'm thankful that we got to see them play together one more time (even though it was while Kaori was dying on the operating table). I think the parallels between Kousei's mother and Kaori are deeply fascinating. As are the version of him that played to keep his mother alive and the version of him that played only because Kaori was there. Because she inspired him to share his gift with others and impact audiences. She helped him to look around and see that he has more people behind him than those that have left him in death. "...perfect pitch prodigy to being a tone deaf adolescence." THIS is so accurate! I also felt it was cruel irony that he couldn't even hear his own playing with that pitch perfect ear and S tier accuracy. Its my personal theory that he became the passive type is because he seemed to grow up with just his mom in the house and his father out there. He didn't have an example of a parent to go by other than someone dominating him. That on top of the fact that he might have believed her justified in some of her child rearing abuse because he was saddled with such false responsibility and guilt. I feel both upset that the story ended the way it did, but also somewhat satisfied that it went for realism instead of the easier happy ending. But maybe that's just the angsty writer in me. Unfortunately, I watched Violet Evergarden last year without filming it. But I really wished I did so I could gush about it at length. I do want to watch the specials and the movie, though, so there's always that! ^_^ Thank you for taking your time to share your perspective because I really appreciate it. And I wanted to make sure I sat down to respond in full because its truly deserving of so much attention.

Me too! I did enjoy it but the ending might make me unable to rewatch it. But then again, there's something so painfully realistic about it that makes it a masterful finish to such a great series. And I knowww it makes so much more sense now 😔

When i first watched this anime, the final episode broke me, and i couldn't stop crying form the moment i saw her Spirit play the violin with him. A lot of people cry when they hear the letter, but to me the Ballade they play Chopin's Ballade made this even more heartbreaking. As it was considered Chopin's dearest work to his heart. He wrote the ballade during an 8 month stay in Vienna when he was still searching for a treatment or cure for his illness. The Ballade to me represents how he viewed his life and the possible acceptance that his disease would end his life. The Ballade to me is an interpretation of how unfair he thought his life was in what he wanted but he was still blessed with friends and those around him who supported him. This is why Your Lie in April is truly beautiful to me how the music and it's history ties into a lot of the characters and their struggles through the year we know them. Chopin considered his life unfair because his disease prevented him from helping his fellow comrades in Poland during the revolution. He hated himself so much for not being able bodied to fight that he personally exiled himself from his homeland and never returned to Poland out of shame. If you ever listen to CHopin's work, you can feel so much of his emotions in the music. His pain, his regret, his self loathing but you can also feel the love he had for his homeland and the people he cherished in his life. The final song being CHopin's Ballade is both pain and joy of life.

Coming from someone that also creates stories and characters. Writing painful moments like this is both very difficult and fulfilling if to make the person watching or reading feel something or to provoke a new perspective. Regardless of how many times I suspected this would happen its still so sad in reality T_T

I was in the clear for most of the series, but this last episode...the shock of it alone was enough to undo me. But now having the context of the backstory and losing Kaori is just rough.

This anime was so hard to watch. Just knowing that she would never play with him again because she was going to die was too much. He only knows sorrow and grief because he keeps losing the people he loves. It is just so sad.

It's a sad anime, it reminds me of 3d kanojo real girl, both very similar animes and both make you tear up. But the other one has a happy ending and this one doesn't. It shows how not every story will always end up a happy ending. :(
