First Variation Flatside Winchester 1895 Musket

When Winchester first began producing Model 1895 rifles, they made a model that only lasted a short time. Between serial numbers 5000 and 6000, the first pattern 95s were replaced by a second pattern of the design, which changed several elements. The most notable was the receiver profile, which went from a flat sided slab to one with a scalloped relief cut. Most substantially, the safety mechanism which prevented out of battery firing was substantially improved in the second model, with the distinctive spring loaded lower element of the action lever. First pattern Winchester 1895s are quite rare, especially in a condition as nice as this one!

M1895 was designed before spitzers were a thing with anyone but the French. The magazine was designed to handle the longer cartridges the strengthened action was capable of using, not for not yet used pointed bullets.

I'm puzzled on the "musket" designation of the gun. I'm not very well versed in those sort of things, quick research on the web indicate that musket are typically muzzle loaded guns, which seems not to be the case here ... ? Can someone enlighten me a little on the matter ? (Great video as always) cheers !
@ForgottenWeapons

"Musket" was simply the designation Winchester chose for the long barrel configuration with a full-length stock, duplicating the military pattern.
@stevecarswell6329
@stevecarswell6329 6 лет назад
Bananeisafree I think (if I'm wrong don't blow up internet I'm no pro) that musket was one of the optional barrel length designations. I also think carbine and rifle might have been the two other designations.

Musket refers to the barrel length. Winchester typically had three barrel lengths; Musket (long) rifle (medium) and carbine (short)
@gunner678
@gunner678 6 лет назад
Bananeisafree musket was still in popular usage when referring to military style rifles. In fact until quite recently in the british Army, weapon practice was still referred to as 'musketry' very quaint considering that we are armed with a short bullpup rifle! In this case, it is a description used by the company to infer barrel length.

Battles and Leaders of the Civil War on Page 343 has a piece by one Henry E. Smith, Brevet Major, U.S.A. on "The rear-guard at Malvern Hill". Wikipedia also calls it the Battle of Poindexter's Farm (1862). Going by the text of the book (see google books) this synopsis of other sources (although the fist line may be his own recollection); Seems to be writing at the United Service Club, Phil. on May 25th 1885 (going by the last line of that paragraph). Wondering how old Major Smith would have been, (if it's the same Major!...:) being a member of the Society of Indian War Veterans; I.O.W.: a veteran of one of the conflicts in the Indian Wars (and perhaps the Civil War). Interesting!

I was wonder if anyone/any company do modern lever action rifles. I saw few modifications but they mostly end in replacing barrel cover with modern one with rails for addons and replacing wooden stocks. I would love to see such gun made from scratch from new materials with some proper modern features and design. Lever action rifles are just cool for casual shooting, how they look and how they work... That reloading movement is just so satisfying :D

If you don't mind loading from a tube Henry makes the best lever guns today.
@therideneverends1697
@therideneverends1697 6 лет назад
I wish henry did side loaders because the top of the tube loading thing is just atrocious. For a historical reproduction model it makes perfect sence, but for a semi modern franken gun why not have the superior loading system?
@paranoiia8
@paranoiia8 6 лет назад
That why I would love to see modern version of such gun, not only replacement of stock and wooden parts to "tactical" style. We have some new materials and technological processing of metal that give us more precise and rugged parts compared to what we had 100 years ago. I can bet that if someone with experience would sit on it could make totally new mechanisms that probably could even load proper rifle cartridges (eg 7.62) keeping that nice and cool lever action reloading. Its sad that no one experiment with such ideas of old guns meeting new technology/materials(they do but 99% of it are hand made peaces costing fortune). I aso would love to see long rifle-like revolvers with weird caliber(literally rifles that have revolver loading method) :D It would be cartoonish as hell, but it would be such nice collectible peace that would look cool on the wall and you could make fun with it on the range with friends. I know that its not really useful, but 90% of us use guns only in range shooting paper targets with all those super-mega-tactical peaces with ultra-mega addons and scopes that where made for real combat... So why dont just go other way, and make that time spend in range more fun, show people such guns and talk about it.

Also what's with that blue strip ontop of the receiver? Is that the ejector? Because it really is quite blue, almost looks anodized or powdercoated.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 6 лет назад
The extractor. It’s mirror polished and then nitre or fire blued to get that electric blue color. It’s also the least durable form of blueing so to find it nearly completely intact is quite rare on a gun this old. Luger parts went through the same process, but were removed from the salts at an early process and lower temperature to give a bright yellow/gold “strawing”.

I thought the 1894 was the first Winchester designed for smokeless powder. edit> Nope, I was wrong. The 94 was designed for black powder, and eventually chambered in some smokeless calibers. The 95 was the first designed from the ground up for smokeless.
@Tuton25
@Tuton25 6 лет назад
Siesta Time I thought it was the 1892?
@siestatime4638
@siestatime4638 6 лет назад
The 92 used what were originally black powder cartridges, mainly pistol caliber (e.g. .44-40). It could handle smokeless powder pistol cartridges as they became available.
@millwaterpublishing1387
@millwaterpublishing1387 6 лет назад
The '94 was designed for smokeless... But, since that was a whole new thing at the time, they couldn't quite get their act together to release it in smokeless on schedule. So, as a placeholder, they introduced it chambered for a couple of black powder target cartridges in 1894, then reintroduced it properly along with the first civilian smokeless rifle cartridge (the .30WCF aka the 30-30) the following year. Winchester designed the '95 with potential military use in mind. Spitzer cartridges weren't yet a major consideration, but relatively fragile tube magazines that altered the weight distribution of the rifle with each shot fired weren't popular with military types. The box magazine also made it easier to accommodate a wide array of cartridges.

@okaro6595
@okaro6595 6 лет назад
How could it play as in 1895 there were no pointed bullets. First were adopted in 1898. I think a major reason was that box magazine was seen as a more modern one. All the rifles adopted in 1890s had box magazines. It also does not change the balance of the rifle.
