Hi Dari, Amazon will usually replace if the porch pirates take your package. For more expensive items, you can send the items to secure Amazon pick up station. Another option is that your landlord can enter into an agreement with Amazon that allows them to electrically buzz in to place packages in the mailroom where they are safer. I own several buildings in Chicago and I use this option because so many tenant deliveries were being stolen.
Glitter bomb...in capitalism...crime n theft are a guarantee. ..its just survival....ppl living lower than animals or even bugs. Usa is infested....im orkin man.
I went to UC Davis for my undergraduate degree and California State University Sacramento for my masters in history. Davis California is a nice college town. I have had to take sexual harassment training and work and also through my union. I think it is a very good idea.
My Bday was at the beginning of this week and I spent it mostly with my cats. Went to dinner with a friend and watched videos until I fell asleep. It was a good day. Thank you for asking. How was yours? I see you are a fellow Virgo.
I’ve subscribed to see if you turn woke, shave half your hair, die your hair blue and get your nose lip and eye brow pierced by the end of your course😅
I had a Russian friend who attended graduate school in America. In Russia, she worked as an English translator, but she found it difficult to understand all of the school material in English. So, I was wondering if you have any problems understanding the course work and lectures because it is all in English.
Just let the professor know and he or she will cut you some slack. Also, very important to go to office hours with professors because they like the feedback and when you are making a huge transition like this and there are some language issues, they need to know that usually will be very understanding.@@DariStep
My son lived in Brooklyn, you cant leave your Amazon packages in front of your building it will get stolen. They have Amazon lock boxes all over town. Pick the nearest one to you and have them delivered there. You have 72 hours to pick the item up using a code that is sent to you in a text message.
Great points, i agree with you fully. Sadly though; conservatives also use such well meaning things as hateful, reactionary, ideslism... In 8th grade we all had health class, aka (sex ed.) But I feel it lacked awareness about abuse of all different types of ppl. Hope it gets better still.
Amazon will refund you if something happens. However, it's normal for Amazon to leave the packages at your door. I've never had anyone ever take anything. It's strange, but most people are very honest.
I know it's probably still a bit crazy for you right now, but be prepared for the culture shock (and homesickness). You'll probably start feeling it a bit after about 2-3 months once you're settled in. But hang in there, it'll get better eventually. Luckily, you're at a school that has other students not from the USA, you can build a nice little support group to get you (and others) through those tough times. Cheers.
Amazon is good about redelivering stole or lost items if you don't abuse it. I had 3 boxes went missing from our mail room. Amazon replaced all three boxes. Funny thing the day the replacements came the 3 missing items showed up so I had double. Amazon didn't want the extras back, it was too expensive to process the return.
Please do focus on your education and not worry about uploading a lot. So great about the graduate assistantships!Wonderful video content and editing! 😊
hello Dari I knew that you were a fan of the friends and if you are lucky enough you are not far from the (90) bedford street and corner groove street this is the apartment that we see in the credits of the series and in the first the restaurant the little owl who was the central perk
During the pandemic the number of packages delivered to apartments increased dramatically. Apartments became overwhelmed by the large number of packages and they had to tell delivery services to just drop packages at doors. Most people (like me) never had any packages stolen, so we just continued with door deliveries. If you do have packages stolen you can buy a post office box where packages can be left.
Australian government is currently releasing an enquiry into how to handle sexual assaults in universities because they are far too common and the universities are doing far too little. Great vlog. Thanks for your efforts, it was the best video yet and very professional.
I’ve been watching RU-vid channels about life in Russia so I’m looking forward to following your perspective on American life! Thank you for sharing! Such a fun and interesting video. Wishing you luck!!
HAVE YOUR LOCAL AMAZON DELIVERY KEPT AT A LOCAL VENUE, STORE OR SUPERMARKET, SHOPPING CENTER. FIND OUT WHAT DROP SITES ARE AVAILABLE. OR BETTER YET, RENT A POST OFFICE BOX.
In the UK, Amazon can deliver to an Amazon Locker which might be outside a supermarket. You can access a locker 24/7. You can also get deliveries to some post offices, garages and shops. Amazon would inform you when your package had arrived at that shop.
They sort of over did the American flag at the university. LOL The campus is nice . I think NYC is a good spot for you. Since you have traveled Internationally and come from a big city you would be bored in other places. Even a medium size city such as Boston with Cambridge next door would be small and not as excited although the Universities would be pretty cool in Cambridge and Boston. Here is a story about the Statue of Liberty which I think looks too small when you have heard about it all your life. New York did not want it . To accept it meant that they would need to build the base that Liberty stands on and NYC had no interest in spending taxpayer money for it until the French said fine , we will place it in Boston Harbor , they are happy to have it. French schoolchildren were major contributors in that country's drive to build the statue a century ago and newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer started a drive to raise funds to build a pedestal for the statue on Bedloe's Island. and that's how it ended up just south of Manhattan. Boston , New York have this little thing going on because of their baseball sports teams . They are the Yankees, Boston is the Red Sox . I am excited , my BMAC worked !
Labour Day is celebrated in Canada too. Only essential service employees work here on Labour Day. We have family outings, or get together with friends and have a quiet day on Labour Day .
So much to say. So let me start off by saying that it's great to see your explorations around New York. Can't wait for you to share more of your impressions, especially aspects of American life that are very different from Russia...or other parts of the world you've visited. Labor Day is unofficially considered the last day of summer and the beginning of fall. There are different climate zones across the country so it might not necessarily feel that way depending on where you are. At any rate, it's often the last time to take a short vacation before school starts. It's also one of the summer holidays in which people celebrate with a barbecue. Would love it if you could visit a barbeque restaurant in NYC with some of your friends. Regarding your choice of universities...you made a GREAT choice. You mentioned several factors relating to the cost of the program (which St John's was fully covering)...fantastic! But I'm unsure whether you mentioned the quality of the university. Once you graduate, you'll absolutely want a degree from a university that people know and respect....and people know and respect the business school at St. John's. Regarding the sexual harassment program....I think it's a perfectly fine thing. I doubt you have time to do a tally, but it'd be interesting to compare responses between guys/gals. Regarding ordering from Amazon...I help procure tech products for a Fortune 500 company. And I order multiple products for different customers from Amazon every single day. FYI, getting reimbursed by Amazon for lost/missing items is a big hassle. So it's better to ship them to a nearby secure location where they can be picked up. When shipping to apartments I will send items to an Amazon Fresh grocery store OR an Amazon Locker, which allow my customers to retrieve them when they're ready. BTW, I received my undergraduate degree from UCLA which is in Los Angeles, CA (GO BRUINS!!!). It's one of the largest schools in the nation....had a lecture hall class with over 600 students! Also earned my masters degree from Pepperdine in Malibu, CA.
Americans don't say "University town" but "campus", and almost every American university has a campus which is separate from the surrounding town/city.
I think the on-line course is a good idea mainly because foreign students come from so many backgrounds and from countries that may not all have the same understanding of the issues as those who grew up in the United States. It helps to put everyone on the same play ground!
Normally, I’d pass up NY because its expensive but after hearing your answer, I approve of your choice because your education is covered and your expenses are manageable. That’s the way you should live and you don’t want to face stress about taking care of yourself far from home in a new country! Labour Day is the American version of May Day in Europe, the holiday celebrates the struggles and achievement of workers. September 11, Patriots Day is a holiday that commemorates those who died in the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks on NY and Washington DC. The fall here is about the beginning of the school year, the end of summer and the idea of growing older. Thanks for your video update, best wishes for a successful semester and a good 2023 here in America! Take care and remain blessed.
Labour Day is celebrated by Americans and Canadians by taking their kids to Wal-Mart to hit them. "No, we're not buying videogames, we're buying stuff for school!" The door knob thing is the fault of people using crappy Kwikset door knobs, it depends on how they hang the door and install the knob, sometimes it's clockwise, sometimes it's counterclockwise. The package delivery situation is because people are used to having USPS deliver everything to their door, so Amazon and UPS etc. do it the same way. Carriers do give you the option of going to an office to pick it up though. In Russia, you have to pick up packages at the post office, so Wildberries and Ozon copied that. So yeah, packages are stolen more often because Americans value convenience over security.
@@DariStep Кстати, it's a good idea to replace your door locks with something decent, the landlord doesn't care if your stuff is stolen. Kwikset locks protect against a light breeze.
Labor Day is essentially America’s May Day. May Day’s origins are from the Haymarket Riot in Chicago in 1884 when labor unions were pressing nationwide for an 8-hour work week. In order to celebrate the labor movement, but avoid the celebration of May Day and the Haymarket incident, the federal government moved the holiday to September. Labor Day is typically considered the official end of summer. It’s actually tradition that some summer clothing (like seersucker) should not be worn after Labor Day.
Looks like its going good everthing looks so green i ben there one time to queens littel much for me not used to big city but iv driven all up and down east coast very nice lot of lakes and rivers for boating and stuff so i hope it gos realy well for you there
when you get a chance.. Check out Long Island. If you have a car you can go anywhere. If not the Long Island Railroad will take you to plenty of nice places like Freeport, Port Jefferson, Patchogue, or Montauk to name a few. There are some great restaurants all over the island
The reason why Spanish is common in NYC is because of many immigrants from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba) and South America. In the western US, Spanish is even more common because of immigrants from Mexico and central america.
Nice tour! Thanks for sharing. As for Amazon packages, some people install a secret camera that always records, other people place a large box outside that locks after a package is placed inside.
Hillary Clinton is coming to teach at Columbia University! If you ever get a chance to attend a lecture by her, GO! She is brilliant, competent, and so inspiring!
Wow, you're so crafty Dasha, you managed to get a free manicure in exchange for publicity for the salon haha. Very business like and a win win for all. I was a little worried about the rents and especially that you can't access your Adsense revenue, but I think you'll do just fine. Barter is a great survival skill to have❤
I have not seen anyone do such a thorough review of their experience of the first week of MBA. This is truly a first. Additionally, your perspective of a foreigner in NYC is ulta unique and your content is captivating and quality is second to none.
@1:58 We celebrate labor days with family and friends doing backyard BBQ, go to the park, river or lake and chill drinking beers, than later drive in movies. Something leisure and relaxing, something to de-stress..... Good luck Dari, i hope to see you in New York with your old friend Natasha and Alina in the future.
I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, attended the university of alabama in Tuscaloosa and Tulane law school in New Orleans, both had beautiful campuses and I loved academic life. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
Great video, Dari. You covered so much in one video. I attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. It's a classic college town with a beautiful hilly campus, including a river in the middle of campus and walkable downtown. And yes lots of sports stadiums also like a 70,000 seat football stadium and 15,000 seat basketball arena. We have numerous other great college towns in the Midwest such as Madison, Wisconsin; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Bloomington, Indiana.
Dari, thank you so much for sharing a little more of your American adventures with us! That said, please focus on your studies and only take the time to produce videos when you really have free time. I want you to do well in school. I appreciate the added viewpoints of your fellow foreign classmates on various topics and their life in the U.S. Keep it up! It looks like you picked a quality university even if it wasn't hugely expensive compared to some that would put you thousands and thousands of dollars in debt. It's doubly awesome that your tuition is mostly covered and your professors are great to work with! You are a lucky girl! ☘ Amazon has security locker locations you can choose where you can have them deliver your packages. It helps with any porch pirates you might have in the neighborhood. The only issue is finding a way of transporting larger items from the locker to your apartment without having access to a car, truck, or SUV. This situation of no good options is what people sometimes call a "Catch-22" dilemma. I continue to wish you the absolute best for your travels and your future life. Have fun in the U.S.A.!! 😊💚
Depending on the circumstances and value of the Amazon packages you could potentially go to Federal prison. So It's not really about trust, It's just not worth the risk for most people.
If your worried about theft, why are you dealing with Amazon? I would check your credit card statement closely when it arrives. Most likely you will find all kinds of charges from Amazon you didn't make.
I'm glad you're studying at a good university in New York. As a 77-year-old grandfather, I only wish that you gain useful knowledge and prosper in life. In the past, you could only go to Moscow, or in the GDR to study abroad from Budapest. Back then it was Bolshevism, today's world is more open. I studied here in Budapest, and the standard was high at our university. In my opinion, studying at home is more beneficial, but it is easier to acquire language skills abroad.
I went to Virginia Tech, Dari, and was a business finance major. VT is in Blacksburg, VA and basically the whole town is a university town both on and off campus. There were lots of big dormitories on campus and apartments off campus, definitely a student town. I loved it there, some of the most beautiful mountains scenery in the US. Glad you’re enjoying the urban vibe of NYC😊
@@kingdomofgeorgia1751 definitely wrong, VT is one of most diverse schools in the US esp since most of the students come from northern VA or the Norfolk area.
About teaching sexual harassment in high schools this somewhat controversial in America, well its more just sexual education i.e. Learning about sexual organs, puberty, safe sex, STDs, birth control, and consent that’s controversial. In the debate you have people (like me) who support initiatives for Sex Ed and conservative and/or religious people (mainly and) who say Schools should only teach abstinence. Those against it say school should just tell hormone fill teens to not have sex and that it should be up to the parents to decide if they want to discuss it further, the common counter argument is that they’re hormone filled teens who are naturally curious, you can’t fully stop every teen from engaging in sex so it’s better to at least teach all of them to be safe and responsible, also it’s hard for parents to have this talk so it’s better to do it with a professional. Ultimately in the US public education is up to each individual state, some have zero Sex Ed, some have Sex Ed but if the parent doesn’t consent to it they can have their child skip it (I think that’s how it is in New York) others have mandatory Sex Ed I live in California, where Sex Education is a requirement to graduating high school, personally the only thing I find wrong with this is that it makes Biology class a requirement (I hate biology) In my Sex Ed we had a section to talk about consent which included watching this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oQbei5JGiT8.htmlfeature=shared Beyond a short Q and A we didn’t go further on the topic on consent and sexual harassment. There’s a video by people who say it should give a more detailed discussion. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NLKWEUhOHss.htmlfeature=shared
The culture shocks just keep coming, huh? Very enjoyable video it was interesting hearing the opinions of some of your fellow students, more of that please. :) I remember how much I loved being on campus when I was in college. College(s) I should say (mostly University of Houston and University of Texas at Austin) and UT is HUGE. I'm glad you're enjoying your new life. Keep exploring!
Hi Dori ... Amazon send you a message to your email or phone letting you know that ur package has been delivered. They also send you a picture. If it is missing or broken you can make a complaint.
Labor Day is to commemorate workers in 19th and 20th century in USA. Big companies in steel, railroads, mining and textiles abused workers and even made children to work. Then labor unions were organized to protect workers. Many died in the process, but soon labor unions were strong. They gave them a liveable wage, hospitalization, vacations and a 40hr work week! Many conditions are better now due to unions. The AFL-CIO was instituted in 1952, it was originally started by Samuel Gomoers, who was a cigar manufacturer. Study hard. A campus map will show you where all the buildings are. Good luck!
Before you buy more furniture paint one or two walls. It will look much better if you do it right. Usually people do it in the foyer area. When you move out you’ll just paint it/them white again.
At your age, you are still young, you might as well take the time do the education stuff because you might not feel like doing that when you get older and have an extremely closed mind like me. Yeah you can buy those door security bars at Home Depot that you slip underneath the door knob(s) from the inside of the apartment which are good. As far as drugs and dating, some people are physically activated and other people are only mind activated (but not their body). Right they can slip drugs into girls drinks at parties which is sadness but there is a lot of that everywhere except for the real adult women who are role models for younger women....???.
Delivery is a problem. Yes they leave stuff outside everywhere and things get stolen. Its a very bad system. Labor day is a big picnic, barbecue day or the last day of summer at the pools. Sorry about the food issues. Good idea to go to restaurants from other countries. Eating at home is cheaper. Hugs! 😘
Just to add that most universities in North America have campuses; that is a territory that is unique to the university. In some bigger cities this many not be completely true as parts of the campus may be integrated into the local community.
University of Nebraska Lincoln, nice friendly, and very inexpensive university city. 400,000 population so not overwhelmingly big for those that don't want a huge city. But big enough to have some of the same attractions. Campus is next to town center, lots of apartments around the campus and downtown focused on student housing. And there are a lot of different international dining options in the town, and quite a few shopping centers. Good hosptials. Again a nice clean safe city in a state and city with a very low cost of living, so great for students on a budget. And they have a decent sized international student body.
Regarding Amazon packages-- they are really good with returns regarding that. I had an issue where the package wasn't delivered / was lost or stolen, and their policy typically is: " did you ask your neighbors? not there? hm. wait to see if it shows up tomorrow, and if it doesn't, come back and ask for a refund " lol if you are nervous about theft though, you could have them deliver to a PO box instead :)
I do hope that your apartment tour is not part of your special buy me a coffee video because I can't even afford to buy myself a coffee. Thank goodness I don't like coffee. But ever since the '80s, whenever I left home, I always brought something to drink with me. The cost of liquids at convenience stores and other places are just outside my budget. I did find a bottle of iced tea for a 39 cents at an Anne and Hope one time in the mid '90s. That was pretty much within my budget at the time. You won't see That store because they've gone out of business but if you ever see a Target, it's like that. Sort of like Walmart but a little bit more upscale. And hopefully they pay their employees better. (Walmart is so bad they made an entire documentary about how they treat their employees and how much they pay them, and who gets to pay their benefits for them - Yes it's the taxpayer). I try to avoid Walmart. Your mileage may vary.
