“Ramesh Karthik Nayak, a 26-year-old tribal writer from Telangana’s Nizamabad, has made history by becoming the first and youngest tribal author to win the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2024. His collection of short stories, titled ‘Dhavlo’ (which translates to ‘Song of Lament’), has garnered recognition. The book not only weaves captivating tales about the Banjara community, but also introduces over 400 words from the Banjara language. Through this literary work, Karthik aims to offer a glimpse into Banjara culture and heritage for those unfamiliar with it. His parents, who hail from a small hamlet in Nizamabad’s Jakranpally mandal, are understandably overwhelmed by their son’s achievement. Karthik hopes that ‘Dhavlo’ becomes a conversation starter, fostering connections among different people. His literary journey began in 2018 with his first book, 'Balder Bandi.”
