Fish make lots of sound on coral reefs!

Have you ever listened to your clownfish? Really sat down, stuck a hydrophone in your reef tank, and listened? No? Well here's your chance to find out what you've been missing! Lots of pops and snaps of tiny little clownfish teeth as they interact with each other to establish dominance in our tanks!
In fact, we know of over 100 families of fish that contain species that make some sort of sound. Most fish make simple sounds, series of pops and snaps - but with only maybe one or two overall patterns. There are some exceptions though - the Lusitanian toadfish makes at least four different patterns.
Damselfish, which include the ever popular Clownfish (the genus Amphiprion), have numerous species that make sounds including commonly kept species like Ocellaris, Percale, and Clarkii. Some of them are able to produce numerous patterns, but most (including our clownfish) make one or two patterns. It turns out that our reef tanks are bustling with activity, and that activity includes lots of pops, clicks, and grunts from our fish as they go about their lives in our aquariums.
Some articles I'd suggest looking at if you want to learn more about the sounds that fish make:

This is really great timing! Just a few days ago, I heard some chirping noises coming from my tank and realized it was my clownfish. He was making these sounds because I had just removed the algae magnet that it stays near at night in order to make it consider my anemone. Hoping he will host soon, one month of not hosting is already too long for me lol.

I have a sound system under the tank playing a 24 hour sound file that I made with underwater sounds of reefs and waves. It's synchonized with the pump's schedule :) The reef sounds are always there but the waves volume vary in synch with the pumps intensity. The fact that the banggais make really loud sounds when they are fighting allowed me to intervene many times while the 10 of them were trying to kill each other. I tried to scare the fish with the piano at different frequencies but they don't react at all.

That’s really neat! I’ve never heard of anyone doing that.

Funny! I only just heard about clownfish making sounds today, and so I wanted to see a video on it. How timely!

I ran across it this week as well! I thought it was interesting so had to dig up some papers on it.

I wonder if the constant noise of pumps, skimmers, etc. in our tanks can alter these behaviors or stress the fish ...

I’ve wondered that too!

Here because my kids asked if fish make sounds. Appreciate the video and info, but it was difficult to hear the sounds over you. Please in the future pause for us to listen.

Awesome! Wondering if you know or can find research on clown aggression as it relates to harem size, people say “you must do 30” (we know why… brs) but no one can point to anything about why not 6 or 7 or 15 or 50… Does it have anything to do with other females in the group...? also what about aggression toward other fish like blue-green chromis or firefish, or…? Love how you are able to home in on research!

From what I’ve seen for sure clownfish harems are smaller than 50. Without looking it’s basically by size. The largest female will be the dominate one, and then the rest are held at bay by that female. If another grows too big, it’ll be kicked out one way or the other by the more dominate members of the group. This all happens in the context of a single anemone, where the harem spends their entire lives. I would guesstimate group sizes of 5 or 6 are much more realistic, and they should be built with fish size in mind with a single larger fish and multiple juveniles. I’ll see if there’s more on it though!

@@ReefMan I started with 6 from same clutch, they were inseparable in my 20 long for a month, plopped them into my 150g and they were still inseparable for about 6 months then one day (at least from what I noticed) the larger one (#1) bullied #4 and #5 (if #6 is smallest) to death. i'm going on 9 months, so far the 4 are inseparable and get along nicely. Lot's of caves and rockwork, I have some nems they aren't interested, they like the long hair GSP and green long hair mushrooms, but they swim all over and don't care to be hosted. they do spend quite a bit of time around the gyre... I know much of this is hit or miss as far as there are no hard fast rules on some behavior. I couldn't find any real studies, and was hoping as I see it to me anyway, you are the guru of reef research 🙂

If I remember right clownfish groups are female heavy. The males tend to wander a lot more, maybe your group ended up being male heavy. Also, since they’re all growing up together six months sounds like around the time they might start becoming mature, and fighting to establish who’s going to lead the group. Only that fish gets to reproduce, so the fights can be very aggressive as you saw.

You know you can't just say and here's a sound and as the sounds playing keep jammering on and blabbing on and talking over you got to give someone a chance to listen to it other than that it was a great video but you were too worried about talking then you were about letting the audience actually listen
