Fish pie is a delicious traditional British fish dish. Chunks of assorted fish are cooked in a rich and creamy sauce, then topped with mashed potato. This is then baked in the oven to turn the top golden and crispy.

Mmmmm, wonderful! I haven't made this in years, but I will now. I have a similar fish casserole which layers sliced onions, potatoes, tomatoes, fresh spinach, and finnan haddie all smothered in a bechamel. The smoke of the fish permeates everything. It's lovely on a cold night.

You could also use a pinch of turmeric - it's much less expensive than saffron, and it's also a superfood.

I don't even like seafood much and this looks like the perfect bowl of comfort on a winter's day. I've started to use this channel to disprove people who try to claim that British food sucks.

Nice one Keef, we made it with cauliflower rice with grated cheese mixed in the cauliflower rice on top to replace the spuds, making it low carb nosh. Turned out delicious. Thanks

Aye, fish pie is a proper British classic, it is! Nowt beats it on a chilly evening. Ya get chunks of assorted fish, all mixed up in a rich, creamy sauce. Then, it’s topped wi’ a layer of mashed potato, smooth as silk. Pop it in t'oven, an' let it bake till t'top is golden an' crispy. The smell alone is enough to make yer mouth water! It's hearty, it's comforting, an' it's just what ya need to warm yer cockles.

Looks good I don't eat capers so I'd leave those out. Another spice that makes stuff yellow is turmeric for those that can't afford saffron. Walmart carries much smaller amounts of saffron for about $5 in the Mexican spice section. Think your Mrs. Turns you into a stammering 15 year old. It's really cute. A pal of mine would say, "Good on you, mate!"

I tried that but the fan kept blowing it all round the oven. Now I've got a big turkey roasting tin in the bottom which I occasionally take into the garden and put on a roaring outdoor hob to cremate all the crap off!

Maybe slightly but you'd want to be careful about temperatures - you wouldn't want it hanging around in the danger zone (between 5 deg C and 60 deg C).

I don’t understand your sauce thickening; you’re willing and able to make a roux, yet in many videos you just sift in the flour into your sauces. It is a fact that adding raw flour not only alters the taste, but has the potential to add clumps of uncooked flour into your sauce. Your sporadic adding of flour only complicates the problem because each addition of flour cooks slightly faster than the one that was added afterwards - yielding a very inconsistent sauce in terms of flavor and texture. Please don’t take this negatively. I really enjoy your videos, and I really appreciate the hard work you put into your channel.

Looks delicious! Can one substitute any fish that we might prefer (like fresh tuna or something local that I can catch)? I also had an idea for a long-egg-style series for you: different cheesecakes from around the world (French, Italian, Greek, New York, Japanese, etc.). Very dietetic.

You can use any fish, or mix of different ones, but I would suggest you use some that's oily and some that's flaky. I might struggle with the cheesecake - didn't know there were so many variants.

Do you have a recipe for something the Irish near Waterford would have called Lakeside Pie about 150 years ago?

Hi James - I don't have any such recipe, and couldn't find it online. I asked a friend of mine who lives in the west of Ireland and he's never heard of it. He says pies were pretty much unknown until a few decades ago - the Irish have always been boilers and fryers, nut roasters and bakers.
