I congratulate you because now you do have a "real" tenkara rod in your hand! I am sure that the Nissin Zerosum will support you to develop new casting skills and to enjoy this beautiful fishing technique in a different way. Greetings from Mexico!
I have and absolutely love the Zero sum 320! The ultimate ultralight rod! I will not badmouth the American rods by name but to say there is immense difference in quality and performance between them and Nissin is a monumental understatement!
Migrated over from SUV RVing and really enjoy your fishing. Tenkara is new to me and looks like loads of fun and such simplicity. Thanks for sharing! You have a new subscriber.
Good stuff! I saw the tag and had to watch. I have been eyeballing some rods over on tenbum's site for a while. I wondered how they stacked up. I could see a huge difference in how you brought those fish to net. Nice video always.
@TheInkinJapan Collapses to 22" and weighs 2.1 oz., so it fits inside my backpack , and I don't even feel the weight. For the record, my favorite rod of all is my split bamboo 8' 4 wt rod. Made by A.J. Thramer on a Payne 200L taper - this rod is magic. It's a three piece rod, so I can't hide it inside my backpack when I'm hiking and don't want to people to know that I'm going fly fishing. So, the Zerosum is my usual companion in the backcountry.
Tristan, try not to let your shadow cover the fish/net. I know sometimes this is tricky but letting the fish in sunlight would show its beauty at plenty. Great vid by the way, congrats for the new rod!
I put my shadow over the fish because it's much easier to see it. Otherwise you see the sun coming through the holes in the net, and that makes it much, much harder to see the fish.
Another great adventure - many thanks for sharing! ... but don’t know if I could ever adjust to the faster action of a 7:3 rod. You certainly handled it well though!
This is great! I have been looking at the high end Japanese rods and seriously thinking of purchasing one. I appreciate that you showed us this one. I have been looking at the Tenkara Bum rods, but now think I might have to consider Nissin Zerosum!
I’ve owned both the Zerosum and the Tenkara Bum rods. Two very very different flexing rods. The Zerosum has a much smoother and deeper flex pattern. Both are excellent quality, but the Zerosum is a joy to cast.
I just started watching your video's. Great. I noticed that you seem to be fishing upstream in the one's I've watched. Do you always fish upstream? If so, why. I have started fishing Tenkara and have had some great success in places where I was skunked with a regular fly rod - a few times on the same fly. Love it
You videos have been very good. I suggest you always note what line type and length you are using and show us the fly you are using. Could you name the stream. Also, are you running into a lot of tick as you bushwack? Here in the East, tick among the brush are a major problem, unless you like Lyme Disease and doxycycline cocktails!
Yes, they can. And quite well. Many people fishing tenkara rods dont live in mountains with beautiful trout streams. They live where warm water creeks, streams, and ponds are the norm. They catch all kinds of panfish and bass!
Hey Tristan, Love the videos...quick question if I may. My father is no longer able to fish so I've purchased a go pro to do some of my own videos for him. I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share how you mount your go pro to your hat and any other tips you may have. Thanks!
Rick Lantzy go pro sells all different kinds of camera mounts. They have a head band mount, chest mount. The head mount is what I use to do my videos. I wouldn’t recommend the hat clip, it really weighs your hat down and it builds pressure against your head. They also have shoulder mounts but a lot of times you’ll end up with slanted videos. But also many second party companies sell different mounts for go pro. Good luck.
Also the hat clip won't hold. I learned this the hard way. Goodbye GoPro. GoPro service was unresponsive despite many people saying the same thing. I wouldn't trust a GoPro mount now if my life depended on it.
I’m wanting to get into Tenkara but only see a couple of companies that offer these type of rods. Can someone share some of their brands/favorite rods. Thanks!
For those who start in this fly fishing technique I recommend you DragonTail in its different models and the Rhodo or Sato from Tenkara USA these 2 are adjustable lengths from 8.9 feet to 12.9 feet respectively. (They are relatively durable, robust and inexpensive) and rods premium I definitely recommend my favorites! Which I would describe like this: Oni Type 3 - fun and silky smooth, Karasu 360 - serious and amazingly precise and Oni Type 1 - light as a feather, acurate and almost automatic. (These 3 are not rods for beginners as they have action and feel characteristics that make them unique). They are simply True Tenkara rods!
Did you not watch the video? Have you not watched all the thousands of other tenkara videos? There is a LOT of casting in tenkara, and being able to do it efficiently and accurately is very important.
M. Furey, I'm going to guess that this is your first time watching a Tenkara casting. First off, you won't get the full picture of a cast in a first person view like this is. There is waay more to it than this. Tenkara looks deceptively simple but it is incredibly nuanced. Let me find a link for you to see what casting looks like when you have twice as much line as the length of the rod.
