For $2.8 million, that tournament should be putting judges/wardens on every boat participating.

A tournament with this sort of price pool, they need to require an actual video footage documenting the catch.

In the bass tournament’s our company at work put on every year we all lined up out past the boat dock and left right at day break.. when they said go it was like a drag race..Should have gave the money to the next one in line..

I think they need to put a watcher on every boat that is in the tournament that right there would solve all the problems. Unless the watcher is in on a cheating too.

Polygraph test can't be used as evidence in the state of Florida.

Just because someone doesn't pass a polygraph doesn't mean they're guilty of a crime. There's been several people charged with murder that has passed those tests. So they're obviously not accurate. Not defending these guys but just making a valid legal point.

Questions they ask is .."have you ever cheated with anything or on anyone before"..that's probably why he failed.. everyone will fail.

he knew what time it was, hes in a expensive boat with modern fishfinders depth finder and they tell you everything including the time and he took pictures of the marlin with a modern camera or phone and they both tell the time. mine do and i dont have the money to go out marlin fishing so yes he knew what time it was between his boat and all the monitors on the boat and his smart phone and camera.

It's the boat skippers that do the winning in these tournaments,the "anglers" only wind the fish in, even then the skippers will back the boat down on big Blues and Black Marlin,making landing them easier though that is good practice on fish being returned.

He did certainly not cast any line, since marlin fishing is done by trolling. And since the marlin is a sight hunter, the early morning hours are not always the best.

If the rules say you can start fishing at a certain time, you need to know what time it is.

I was there and i was fishing, What happened he pulled up at 7:45 an was Searching around and there was a lot of life there it looked promising. There were other boats around but spread out. Enough not to know what was going on. Then when he was being Interviewed at the scales he slipped on the time and then corrected himself. And the money he won the 2.8 million was what was in the calcuttas for the White Marlin division, Plus winner take all, And the money that wasn't given out thu the tournament. Is where a fish wasn't caught. That's how they come up with the 2.8 million. At 1 time anyone could afford to get into that tournament but through the years it got a little richer to the point that A regular working man and his crew to go in. They did add a Calcutta for boats 40 and under. ( I think to enter all the calcuttas it cost $63,000)all boats. But just to get into the tournament costs $1500.

I can't speak for marlin fishing but I have been out on lake Michigan for salmon and it takes a while to get 4 lines out to the right depth, so if he had the fish landed by 8:08 he probably put his lines out around 7 I would think because it takes a while to land one of these sometimes hours. What's weird is that the start time was 8:30 this seems super late for fishing I would want my lines out no late then 6:30 ya know you want all your lines out before sunrise. At night the fish start hitting the very second the sun goes down. My friend and his dad who took me were going on and on about how crazy it gets the second the sun completely drops off and sure enough you could set your watch to this.

I'm no ocean person but maybe he was in a different timezone and didn't know it how far out was he?

This is one of the the hardest tournaments to win in the world and the one tournament in baja Mexico is even harder but guess what the deck hands do all the real hard work the person competing just waits to reel in the fish and almost every time it’s some lame rich guy and when you see the deck hands they actually caught the fish it’s all about the crew always about the crew with out them there is no champion ship

You don't cast to a marlin very often, it's a trolling game. Sometimes people use teasers to get them close to the boat and they do cast a lure or bait to them. But mostly marlin are caught by trolling lures or rigged dead bait. I'm just trying to help, I haven't caught a marlin yet but I saw them in Costa Rica close to the beach where I lived. As far as the cheater goes, I don't understand why he didn't get arrested. If we steal $1 from Walmart we'll go to jail. Attempted theft of that much money by fraud should get him a prison sentence.

I'm not a fisherman and I don't have an interest in fishing tournaments but given the spate of cheating scandals in a wide range of fishing tournaments across American - Walleye, Bass, Marlin, etc. it seems like there is a serious problem of cheaters, i.e. people committing fraud to win money and prizes and it appears that some of the major winners have, in all likelihood been repeat offenders because they have been winning the majority of tournaments, which suggests that they continue their illegal methods until the day that they get caught but rarely do they face the consequences for earlier fraud and quite often they do not face serious criminal and financial consequences, as well as the confiscation of assets acquired as a result of their criminal activities. Plus the penalties for these breaches of the tournament rules do not result in life-time bans. If you cheat in the Olympics you are out for good. This needs to change. Since this is a problem affecting competitors from many different states and quite often the bodies of waters used for the fishing tournaments border on multiple states, the U.S. Department of Justice and any other relevant ministries or departments need to pass federal laws that lead to the immediate arrest of individuals who are caught cheating at these tournaments, with a strong deterrent list of penalties, including serious prison time, serious fines, confiscation of assets, stripping their rights to participate in local, state and national tournaments, as well as a national database of cheaters, connected to a national system of competitors' fishing licenses, which can be revoked if a person or group are caught cheating. Enough with the bullshit. It's time for the U.S. to bring down the hammer on these lowlifes.

Soon as a tournament gets up to over a few grand they should have multiple 360 degree camera's, go pro's, audio recording, and have a marshal watching every move. Then ever who wins still has to take a polygraph.

When did you catch the fish? If the lie detector machine is bouncing around like the Stock Market then there is problem. BTW: Most politicians can pass a lie detector test although they answered every question with a lie. Too much in that prize pool to not have cheating. (I would have a big fish towed by a submarine waiting for me to pull up next to it with my big worm and small boat)

I was in Ocean City when this happened. I can understand not knowing what time it is a little bit I usually turn my phone off when I go offshore. You don't have any service anyway so your phone is gonna lose battery quickly

Drones are the future. Watch the fishermen every second and don't use drones to hunt fish. Fishing used to be a simple way to get away from the stress of the rat race and maybe have a battle and something to eat. Now I feel for the fish. Absolute money corrupts absolutely. I sincerely believe he cheated but a polygraph don't mean shit. I watched a documentary about them and the exact phrase they used was "a polygraph is done by a asshole with a little bit of training" So the person giving the test can potentially be bias and can ruin the test.
