Fishing Desert Waterfalls for Wild Trout! (Tenkara Fly Fishing)

Who would have thought you'd be able to catch wild brown trout out from under waterfalls in the desert? This was my kind of fishing! I also fish a miserable little stream higher up in the mountains and somehow stumble my way into catching fish.

This so quickly became my favourite fishing channel on RU-vid and probably overall. As a fly fisherman in southern Ontario, Canada, most of my local creeks and streams look exactly like what you're fishing on this video. It takes so much patience and persistence to find spots on the waterway that combines good fishing conditions and good fish habitat. Keep up the good work. Really enjoying it.

Wow beautiful video! Nice little diversion from this grey day in Colorado. Just stumbled onto your vids recently, and I really enjoy them...there is something about fishing a place that probably hasnt seen another fisher human in years or even ever, like that desert canyon.....that second brownie at the first waterfall was one of the most gorgeous fish I've ever seen. Totally flawless! So, keep 'em coming! Hope you don't run out of counties anytime soon! p.s - those falls where your feet slip out from underneath you are the freakin' worst....ya never see it coming!

I'd probably gone with a 5' line for the overgrown creek. Hooking is rarely the issue, it's keeping enough tension on the line without whacking too many tree branches. Great job!

I am really not an avid fisherman and I don't watch fishing videos, except this channel because I LOVE the cool spots you find. If I had the time to devote to fishing, this is exactly how I'd want to do it (well, I would actually eat some of the trout, but aside from that). Beautiful browns! I know that the Tiny Tenkara rod is not really a traditional rod, and its really only suited for “bow and arrow” casting, but it would be the rod of choice for that brush choked creek. I was afraid you were going to break your new Mizuchi! Another great video! Thanks!

Another great video and interesting creeks . Wondering when the brown trout were introduced to the area . Fish for them in the cowichan River , Vancouver island in the spring and fall and catch them thru the winter when steelhead fishing. They were introduced in the 1930’s and are in a few systems on the island

The first fish you netted was a tiger trout. It's the hybrid of the brown and brook trout. Just saying. You can see the tiger stripe pattern pretty clear, where as the brook trout have more yellow and red spots, and the browns have the black spots.
@TenkaraAddict
@TenkaraAddict 4 года назад
No, it's a brown trout. The "stripes" are parr marks, which are the markings all juvenile trout have. Tiger trout don't look anything like this. I have other videos where I catch tiger trout. Thanks for watching.

With the exception of the rock color, and the lack of rhododendron, this looks a lot like the streams I fish in the Smokies; if you think that brush is bad, try tangling with the rhodo - it's like flexible steel, and the leaves and branches seem designed to snag flies.

The sandstone canyon is a cool setting. And the brushy creek? It's good to know that I'm not the only one pulling fish out of places where equipment barely fits. My shortest setup so far - the top two sections of a 10' 3 weight, with a 4 foot length of 6x. It was truly trout stalking, including crawling into position. Now, I'd probably just use the top three sections of a Tenkara rod. When you going to put this up on Discourse?

That's actually the size water I prefer and excel at fishing. My "home waters", Big Rock Creek and Littlerock Creek in the North side of the San Gabriel mountains above Palmdale would be about like that by the end of August most years and really brushy like that along a good bit of them. Fished them with a 9'6" 100+ year old split bamboo rod. Poked my rod with just the leader out and a #18 green mosquito through an opening in the brush and trees to a bend in the creek with a big maple growing on the opposite side and a huge root jutting into the creek. The sun was just beginning to set in the canyon. Monster Brown took it. I never stood a chance of landing it. It was all of 20 inches. I got to see and feel that big son of a gun on my line though. The rush of it was kind of indescribable. Almost like I would imagine a heart attack to feel, only good. Don't under estimate small water and the fish it can hold when there isn't much pressure. If you ever find yourself in that area, you should do yourself a favor and fish the two creeks. I've caught Bows, Browns, Cuts, Brookies, hybrids(cut-bows) and at least 20 Goldens(real Goldens, not Palominos) out of them, but that was 20 years ago when their were far less people, and who knows what the years of drought have done. I've seen vids on them from a couple of years ago and they looked different but healthy. And they were areas that were easy access, not the miles that I waded to get to. Lots of pools that would be great for your Tenkara gear. #14 to #20 green mosquitoes or Adams, and #14-16 elk hair caddis, you can't go wrong, and that's 365 days a year. Dries worked even when there was snow on the ground. I found the waters to be best around early June to early August. After the snow melt runoff slowed down a good bit, and before they slowed down too much. I'll never make it back to Cali so I don't mind giving up the spots.
@TenkaraAddict
@TenkaraAddict 4 года назад
Sounds great! I'll definitely pay those spots a visit the next time I'm in the area. Thanks 👍👍

@@TenkaraAddict This is a little vid(not mine), fairly recent, of the high pressure area on Big Rock. I fished there quite a bit but it's the stocked area. I have really enjoyed your channel since discovering it. After watching your video about the 8.5' $4 rod, I went straight to Amazon and purchased the very last one and they will NOT be restocked. The $8 (2-pack) came yesterday and I am delighted. I have never owned or used a Tenkara Rod. My biggest hurdle is the Line(s). I don't mean length and strength, I mean... HOW DO YOU DO THE LINE? EVERY video speaks differently about it. Tapered lines, Straight lines, Tippets, leaders, etc. All the videos talk about buying certain lines 9', 10', 11', etc. The spools say 50m. How long is 50m? America wasn't teaching THE METRIC system when I was in school in the '60s. I have to learn a whole new measuring system to go fishing! I need 1st-grade instructions, with examples! Do you have any recommendations?
