We show you how to go fishing for Mullet at Pondalowie Bay in the Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, at the bottom end of Yorke Peninsula. We a barrel float (feed float), a bait bucket, maggots (Gents) and size 6 hooks.
A popular surfing location, Pondalowie Bay is also a picturesque fishing spot. Although you can drive onto the beach, the sand was very soft so went around to the car park to the left of the Bay. From there it was a short walk to the rocks.
When we arrived to go fishing for Mullet at Pondalowie Bay, the water was teeming with fish and there was no wind to speak of, so we baited up our barrel float rigs in anticipation of a successful session. Note that the rock surface is very rough so you need work boots to be safe. I soon found however that I could not cast out far enough to reach the fish, and I was not getting any bites. This is one of the main challenges of float fishing for me - the other is tangles! It was frustrating as I could see the fish jumping out of the water just beyond my reach. Martin was able to cast out further and was catching fish, and I realised that I needed to wade in and cast while standing in the water.
I had worn my work boots expecting to fish from the sharp rocks. However I couldn't wade into the water in those, so had to get my fishing shoes from the car. When I returned I realised that I should have also grabbed my bait bucket so I could top up my burley in the barrel float while out in the water. How annoying! I was eager to catch a fish so decided to fish without it.
As I had no bait bucket, I waded into the water (without extra burley) with my bait jar stowed down my pants and my keeper bag tied around my waist. After about 15 minutes using and empty barrel float (feed float) I still hadn't caught any fish despite seeing plenty in the water, so I made another trek back to the car to get my bait bucket.
By the time I was back in the water, the weather was starting to deteriorate. I had wasted an hour of prime fishing time! The wind had picked up and there seemed to be a lot fewer fish around. Luckily Martin had caught a few Mullet while I walked back and forth to the car to get my fishing shoes and ta bait bucket. My efforts paid off in the end though and I caught a few Mullet myself. It is always fun fishing with a barrel float rig because it is so visible when you catch one, and you can see it moving through the water towards you when you reel the fish in.
Unfortunately, I managed to get a hook lodged in my thumb while in the water. I was focused on keeping my fishing rod out of the water while removing my hook from a fish's mouth and I broke a golden rule: I did not loosen off my line and when free of the fish's mouth, the hook flicked back because it was under pressure. This is very dangerous - I might have lost an eye. Anyway I could not get the hook out so taped up my thumb and carried on fishing. I had to get the hook cut out the next day as there was no way I could remove it!
So there were a few lessons that day:
1. Burley really helps catch fish. This is not the first time this has happened to us, particularly with Mullet and Tommy Ruff.
2. Planning your day and being organised is essential when only fishing for a few hours, as messing around getting the right gear wastes previous fishing time!
3. So when fishing, be prepared for any kind of fishing in cased the unexpected happens. You need to be prepared with various fishing shoes, boots, rods, bait options, bait bucket barrel floats etc. So now we make sure we have everything in the car!

Another great video, loved your response to Martins request for a beer and glad to see you had your priorities right, fix thumb or continue fishing. Well done 😊

That’s a great spot. I wade out there over the shallow rocks and reef. Lots of mullet but also plenty of salmon at times and odd balls like king George whiting, flathead, trevally and others. Wading is best on a lower tide so you can get out and cast out over the sandy holes and bottom. For the salmon I use half pillies under a small float.

Hi Linda and Martin, thanks, I've just stumbled across your great RU-vid videos and info on the web page. I'm an old bugger now and lived in Perth 17 years but still get back to original SA occasionally. Pondi is a great spot. I've scored well at that spot you fished. Pity we can't get deadly live gents in WA like SA. (Yep, gotta breed my own.) Only frozen wogs (gents) in WA. In the separate video showing your tommy rig, I like that method of tying the hook line to the main trace, keeping the hook away from the main trace to reduce tangles. Thanks again. PS: Tommies will always be tommies, not herring!😉

Thanks for your feedback! We look forward to getting over to WA in a few years time to fish. Sounds like there are some amazing fishing spots over there 😊. We are loving West Eyre Peninsula we are living at the moment. Have you fished there?

@@fishingsister I look forward to trying Eyre Pen again when heading back that way in about a month. On my way back to Perth from Adelaide early last year I stopped at Coffin Bay, Venus, Streaky, Ceduna but got blown away by raging easterlies all the time. WA is supposed to be one of the windiest places on earth but SA had that honour at that time!😉

Great as always.. what perfect weather…rock cod are actually juvenile blue throat parrot fish

Is that right! They get a lot prettier as they age lol

Easy way to tell the difference is Parrot fish have a solid parrot like teeth and the Wrasse teeth are fang like . Our local Rock Cod are generally Brown/ white / orange Spotted Wrasse and Blue Throated Parrot Fish is a male Blue Throated Wrasse.

I love Martin's priorities... "What else do you want from the car? .... A beer!" 😂 That looks like a perfect flathead spot for soft plastics. Will have to give it a go. Well done guys!

Ha Ha, That's Martin's dry sense of humour🤣. Nice idea about the flathead...that's what what we hope people get out of our vids....see what the place looks like, get some ideas, and give it a go. Let's us know what happens 👍

Done that myself, on gang hooks real dead, stayed there for 2 days until the public holidays, took the doctor a good half hour before he managed to wrestle it out, with lots of nerve blocker.

@Doopo99 Good observation....Linda had a total microphone failure that day, so I am more 'present' in this video as only my voice was recorded. You can only hear Linda if she was near me, and the rest of Linda's voice was added later in the editing stage. The joys of making fishing videos!
