The fish have arrived! We head to the Kenai Peninsula on our first salmon fishing trip of the season in search of Sockeyes. Countless casts and 400 miles later, we return home to preserve our catch, cook up a freshly caught dinner and cure salmon for Alaskan inspired sushi.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

@@baileyhatfield4273 Yeah, I've only been watching the channel for about 2 weeks, but I've watched around 50 videos. If you're young, make a plan and achieve the lifestyle you want. Don't buy ANY crap you don't need... for starters. Minimize all your costs and redirect that money towards a life that you actually want, instead of the life that's convenient. You can do this, if you CHOOSE to.

Alaska is such a contradiction -- it is so raw, yet so civilized. It is so isolated, yet so busy.
@hxhdfjifzirstc894
@hxhdfjifzirstc894 3 года назад
It's only a surface level contradiction. If you look deeper, modern popular culture is Satanic, therefore upside down. It's THIS culture that's uncivilized because of its true nature... so Alaska being 'raw' is actually freedom from the upside down Satanic realm... they're free to be civilized.

Omg. Fish carcasses especially those with the heads make the most amazing fish stock. Add celery , carrots , onions , garlic cloves and assorted seasoning like salt , pepper. Strain, then freeze or bottle. The stock will be amazing to use for all sorts of fish and seafood chowders. It’s also amazing to use for poaching fish as well. The remaining bits I’m sure can be fed to the chickens afterwards.

In 1979 and later years we would drive to the mouth of the Resurrection River - where I think you were at - and we would discuss the possibilities. There was never any activity there that we could see - and the charter boat Captain - that was my Mom's boyfriend - told us that if we didn't know the high water mark or maybe didn't have the right sized treble hooks - then the whole thing was off - and we drove back discouraged. I never had any decent fishing waders anyway. I was always soaking when we we fished everywhere. Later my high school instructor gave me a giant bag of old halibut fishing hooks or some darn thing. Just a regular hooks though. And I drilled wholes in the tear drop sinker molds and made my own treble hooks - giant - and I mean - giant snagging hooks - but I left Alaska and sold the molds, lead, and hooks, and some that were already made to someone who supplied the Indians around here somewhere. Love the video - nice to know there is really a sustainable sockeye run in the Russian River - I knew the Trail Lakes were in the system - but didn't know if there was a big sockeye run or not - imagine all the way back then in 1979. The trail lakes is where I would often stop and bait fish with dolly varden belly meat and catch decent sized Lake Trout. I love the taste of Lake Trout - but I've only had it less then maybe 4 times in my whole life. So anyway - on another "Fixing, cleaning, organizing, and modifying day" you could make some of those hooks for snagging yourself? Just an idea - and you would have something you could share with other people like they shared with you. : )

When you are filleting most fish, I was taught to leave the first side you fillet attached - ie cut the flesh on the first side you fillet as normal but only cut from the top and leave the bottom attached with the skin so you can use the fillet to prop up the fish for filleting the second side. It makes filleting the second side easier and all you have to do is cut along the skin to remove the first fillet after you completely remove the second fillet. It can sometimes be awkward removing the second fillet after the first fillet is removed.

Can try baked salmon, just gut it, take gills out, season to your liking and bake it in the oven, can make it "en papillion", wrapped in baking paper, keeps the flavor of the fish. Also, "sushi" rolls using any fresh leaves available from the garden. Envy you:)))

@@margreetanceaux3906 I can't imagine how good rollmops are fresh. Being introduced to them by my Dutch in-laws here in Aus. But, having fresh fish off the great barrier reef made into Nummus (cooked in lemon or vinegar, no heat, like rollmops). The shelf bought rollmops aren't bad. I'd be very strained to call these guys' 'cured' fish sushi though. Every sushi shop here serves their salmon raw, as it should be. Fresh is best, pulled straight from the river or sea and sliced thinly, mostly. Not that that's likely here (to get fresh fish), away from the coast for normal Aussie fish and I live too far from the salmon farms down in Tasmania. I do eat salmon often though, three times last week. I do love a feed of Kookwurst/rookwurst and sauerkraut, with some mashed potato, too. I first found that in the German beer halls back in '88 when we had the World Expo here. My grandmother on my wife's side made big clay pots of sauerkraut before she came out here in the '40s... she was a sweetheart. She made many good dishes from her homeland.

Seward is the only place really hot right now, unless you count Ship creek in A-town for kings. Still a bit early for the big run on the Kenai river, but there are places to go to get some fish, and if you really work for them you can catch some on the Kenai river this early headed to the Russian river(the run just started there and I am headed down there this weekend/end of week)

TRUE "combat fishing" is when you're ONLY one arm's length away, and casting out into the river in concert. Everyone gets into the rhythm, or they don't (and get their lines cut). LOL Try bleeding them as soon as catching (cutting the gills). Also, roast the heads and pick out all the meat. The cheeks are delicious, and a lot of good/tender meat on the heads. Love the scoop method for getting all that good meat for burgers! And the sushi looks too good!

i cant believe they wouldnt bleed from the gills, thats like fish processing 101. also wish that they fillet better so there is less meat on the bones

Sushi tip: you wanna dip the fish side of the piece in the soy sauce, not the rice. And you can put a little bit of wasabi on the fish before laying down on rice. And wrap the seaweed strip around the fish and rice! Like a little belt :)

Small safety recommendation, freeze any meat you intend to eat raw at -4F for 7 days or -31F for 15 hours. This kills parasites in the flesh.
@davidk4940
@davidk4940 3 года назад
To add to that...Freezing the meat does not kill the toxins if present. You can still get really, really sick. Eating raw 'meat' nowadays is not recommended. I used to eat raw oysters. After eating hundreds of raw oysters over many decades, I met my match and ended up very ill for many weeks. I wanted to...well...you get the drift. As I got older, I cook meat to at least 165F. Sushi is not on the menu anymore either. Sad.

It's often either drought or flood down here... or bloody bush fires since the dispossessed tribes were no longer able to manage undergrowth with controlled burns only a couple of hundred years ago. Good luck over there mate. Bad health has me home bound in my older years.
