Episode 81
Fishing for wild trout in the midst of Northern winters can test both our skill and perseverance as anglers. "Everyone is an expert in May", as they say, but in the depths of January and February, streams can sometimes be so stubborn to yield fish that you're left second-guessing everything you think you know about trout fishing. In this episode, I invite you to come along while I target wild brown trout on a small stream in Fairfield County, Connecticut during early February, and share some of what I've learned about trying to maximize angling success during this challenging time of year.

Hey great work! Gunning for wilds is a whole different ballgame from beating on stockers and it can definitely become addictive, for sure. Best of luck out there!

Good video! what are you using for an indicator?

I almost exclusively use 1/2” Airlocks these days. I’ve tried all sorts of other indicators: cork, foam type with the rubber grommet, wool, Thingamabobbers. They all work, but I came to prefer the combination of non-slip and fast adjustability that Airlocks offer. I’ve considered trying Oros indis, but haven’t gotten around to it yet, and I sort of wish they made 1/2” versions (smallest I’ve seen are 5/8”). Airlocks do come with a certain downside though, the same downside found in all bobber-style indicators: namely, they tend to slap the surface no matter how carefully you try to place a cast. This makes them largely unsuitable for circumstances in which fish are spooky (ie. shallow water or low flows). But during higher flows, as you see in this vid, the fish scarcely even notice. When fishing this same stream during the warmer months though, when flows are lower and many of these fish would be looking up, I’m switching over to a dry-dropper rig, for sure. To see the contrast, check out the vid I released maybe 5 vids ago called something like “Seeking Browns After a Hard Summer”. I filmed that episode on the exact same stream but use a totally different approach in those circumstances.

Sweet vid and great winter intel. I always seem to struggle find fish in the cold months but I know they’re out there!

Thanks. I went out this morning on a small BT stream in my end of CT, and fell back on a dry/dropper just to prevent the slap my other indicator made. Tight lines!

J, how long will you fish that rig?? I mean how late in the winter season?? when waters slightly warm do you just go over to a single pheasant tail??

When waters start to warm, I’ll often ditch the attractor pattern and fish double nymph rigs in wild trout streams (if flows are high enough to make indi nymphing a reasonable approach). Usually two contrasting colored nymphs (light/dark) or nymphs of contrasting sizes (14/18). I do use single nymph rigs on small streams sometimes, but mostly only when I’m being lazy or running low on nymphs. I’m generalizing of course, and the exact conditions will dictate what I do, but if I’m on a wild trout stream, I’m usually trying to present two different options to the trout to maximize my results. In contrast, when I’m fishing for stocked trout, I will fish single nymph rigs a bit more often, as those fish are more likely to hit just about anything presented reasonably well. There’s rarely a need to match natural forage whatsoever for hatchery fish. It’s also worth mentioning that when the higher flows of winter and early spring subside, I switch over to fishing dry-droppers often, and I’ll quite commonly fish a single dropper nymph on those rigs. Only relatively rarely will I fish double nymphs below a dry fly, though that too has its time and place.

This episode was recorded in roughly the first week of Feb. Just took a long time to get around to editing.
