Last May I found myself in Bright for a few days and could not resist jumping into the Ovens River in the middle town for a quick fish on my arrival. It was so good to see the fish eating both dries and nymphs in the cold water late in the season.

Nice video again Tom, great variety of options. Ovens is where I learned to fly fish when I was 12 years old. Great memories of family holidays in this beautiful part of our state.

Loving your videos mate! They’ve really gotten me keen to learn, so I’ve just gone and brought my first fly rod here in Melbourne. Love watching fly fishing videos in the same areas I’ve chased deer over the years!

the Ovens and Buckland are favourite streams of mine. I have only fished them with spin gear but would love to return with the fly rod some time. Thanks.

What kind of rod size and line weight would you recommend for a river such as the ovens where you were fishing?
@tomjarmanfishing3208
@tomjarmanfishing3208 3 года назад
Here I used mainly a 9ft 3 weight rod with a 3 weight line. It handles the fish in these streams well and is just so pleasant and light to fish with all day

@@tomjarmanfishing3208 thanks for answering Tom. I have a 9ft 6wt and was thinking of downsizing to an 8’6” 4wt to hedge my bets a little on the smaller rivers and streams but still have a little in hand for larger stuff. Great video fishing on Xmas Eve. All your videos are excellent keep it up!

What flies did you use? I went up with worms but water was too fast. I could dust off my dads fly rod perhaps if I knew what flies and line to buy to put on it

Like 3mm tungsten beaded nymphs, hare and partridge is the pattern I like alot, I have a video of me tying it. As for line, floating line like a Cortland Sylk, then 6x tapered leader and 6x tippet will do you :) hope that helps mate

Wow 5 pounds that is a big fish for that river, I have only got them that big on the Murray River when they drop the water off after Easter below the Hume weir wall. I used to fish there on holidays with my family.
