The last time i lived in Port Douglas a few years back, as a seasonal worker and backpacker, I had ZERO luck fishing. But this time, after making quite a few adjustments: time of day, set up, bait, location etc my family and I enjoyed catching and eating a wide variety of fish on a regular basis. hey man i live up here just saying alot of the spots youve been fishing your getting way too close to the water, not giving you crap about your fishing but up here weve got massive 3-4 meter long crocs thatll eat you up easily. One of my mates went fishing with his dog and the dog went for a swim and got taken, pretty traumatising for him so yeah just letting you know for next time :)

Dads life I agree with your advice, my first time in port Douglas I had zero luck but after making changes the jacks are in danger when I go there. Mind you, I go twice every year since 2015.

Took a bit of persistence, experimentation and a few migie bites to start finding the fish :)

just moved to PD as a backpacker. been fishing off the jetty and anzac park, but not really any luck haha. any pointers on spots/ set up would be appreciated. cheers

Hey Riley, welcome to Port Douglas. First time I tried fishing there, I had no luck. Then I came back a couple years later, made quite a few changes and boy did I start bringing home spectacular table fish. Here are some of my best tips: - fish at sunrise - use a single small/ medium hook underneath a light running sinker on a 20lb fluorocarbon leader. - use small pieces of cooked prawn (fresh off the boat) - fish around pontoons and rock walls * try the spot just behind the Quicksilver boat. * don’t be afraid to try out different spots. This will get you bream, mangrove jack, flathead. If you can have another rod with a heavier set up, ready for either a live bait or strip of fresh fish flesh, that might bring you home a Barra! :) Let me know how you go and if you need more detail :)
