The ice is finally out of the lakes in Northern Maine and that means trolling for salmon and trout. It's been a long winter and we are finally on the water. Our first day out was greeted with a beautiful calm morning that produced some decent fishing. However, things can change in a hurry. The wind picked up and eventually made it impossible to continue to fish. In the end, it was a great day that provided us with some of Maine's most delicious bounty! Enjoy!

Nothing better than a fresh catch…well maybe some loins off a freshly downed buck. That’s heaven!

Nice to get out and do some fishing, those were all good lookin fish anyways. You guys were rocking and rolling in that boat once the wind picked up haha

Man it's been tough...the wind has been crazy everyday. That lake gets nasty in a hurry but it was nice to finally wet a line. Hope to get back out soon!

That lake makes its own weather. I’ve been wanting to fish it but the wind hasn’t cooperated all week. Long hasn’t been much better.

Why fight against the wind? A brisky day was what we called a "2-quarter day." Travel upwind. Turn off the motor. Open the bail on your rod. Put on live bait (Repellas & streamers will work). Let your line drift a 150-ft. Place your rod down on a seat. Rod tip off the side. Place 2 quarters over the line on the seat. Wait 10 - 15 minutes. Hear your quarters hit the bottom of your aluminum boat. Wait for 50-feet of line to go out. Grab your rod. Close the bail. Pull high your rod. Set your hook. Watch your salmon jump. Reel in and land. "Drifting for salmon and trout." Have done it this way from ice-out, well into June for many years. Has never failed.

I guess I just don’t find fishing in 40 mph winds all that fun. Plus, every bit of debris floating in the lake gets blown towards the downwind end of the lake. You basically spend the rest of the day hooking sticks and weeds.

@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast White caps start at about 10 m.p.h. Not 40! In your video I only saw a few whitecaps. My father taught us not to stand up in a small moving boat. What you say does not make sense. If you are traveling in the direction of the wind, there will be less wind and less debris. I just threw you a bone and you broke it off and threw it back at me. If you were honest, you likely have not heard of such kind of fishing. You believe technology will solve all your fishing problems. But what if it's windy every day (like it can be in the spring)? We never used that excuse and brought fish home every day. And we never told our father what to do. Especially, on film.

Hey, you don’t have to believe met 🤷‍♂️. I would hardly call trolling tandem streamers with a fly rod technology. In fact, I’m using the same setup my grandfather used in the 50’s. As far as my relationship with my father…we like to have fun. We rib each other pretty hard (mostly off camera 😉).

@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast Drifting is more primitive and natural than power driven. It doesn't sound like you've done what I have described. I learned it from an old Frenchman decades ago. We never blamed the wind. We never came off the lake fishless. As a bonus, we saw eagles snatch salmon out of the water and eat them on a rock before DDT was banned. Personally, I think they were showing off. Whether felling a tree towards the lean, leading a workhorse towards the twitch trail, drifting with the current on a river, or managing a successful channel, it makes more sense to go with the flow.

@capturehishonor9292 calm down there big boy. It's OK that he fishes differently than you do and you fish differently than other people do. We are all mightily impressed that you don't care about adverse weather when you go fishing, I personally agree with the people on the video and don't like going out in big wind and waves as it's just less fun in my opinion. And yes, people can have different opinions of what constitutes big wind and waves as well as have different opinions on how to fish.
