Absolutely! I was thinking I'd have to either find a home for it on the bed or buy a swing out tailgate rack, but I'm glad this worked. Saved me some 💰
Man ! I saw a photo of your rig on one of the Tacoma threads ( I'm a 4runner driver ) because I'm currently debating bigger wheels , I literally have the same wheels as you and I freaking love the style of them, so ABSOLUTELY made me change my mind about 285s, I'ma do pizza cutter !
@@lazroo yeah my IG is: unpavd_offroad, but i'm not very good at posting there. i believe my tires were $1400 for a set of 5. Prices may be higher now because of a rubber shortage apparently
I'm running a 285/70/R17 Method 706 with a Nitto Trail Grappler on a 2023 Tacoma TRD Offroad and this 100% did not work for me. Great suggestions by everyone in the comments, but even with pulling the tire back while raising this sits less than 1/2" from the rear diff, touches the heat shield on the exhaust and hits the leaf spring hanger bracket. Maybe it's because I went with hybrid muds instead of an all terrain. /sigh was worth the try before investing in a swing out tire carrier. Thanks for the video!
What I don't like about this situation is that the hot exhaust pipe gets really close to the rubber. I'm afraid it will degrade with time because of high temperatures
I have a rear bumper swing spare tire carrier but it becomes a hassle if you like being able to access the bed quickly and often. I might do this when I absolutely don't want to deal with the swing anymore. I have a 33 spare too.
I think it’s been a few months since you put on the 33s, any advice or concerns that have come up since running on them for a while? I know you’ve lifted it since, but would you still recommend them on stock shocks?
Yes! I’d still recommend the skinny 255/85/16 (or equivalent for 17” and 15” rims). They were great with my stock suspension and why I ultimately pulled the trigger on new suspension was I started to add static weight to the truck (iKamper, bed rack etc ...) I love the pizza cutter tires because you can jump into 33s without dropping major cash on a new suspension setup. Hope that helps! 🤙
Just put the same tires as you on my 2017 Tacoma, looking to do the exact mod. What do you use for a jack/jacking solution? Awesome vid btw, great work on the channel!
Thank you! Not sure. I've only checked the tire after the truck has been sitting out, so haven't gotten a good gauge on great transfer yet. Nothing looks melted so far 🤷♂️😬
Can you make an update on the 255/85r16’s? Any rub issues with stock suspension and wheels off road? Also how’s the road noise, I’ll be using this as my daily driver on I5. I also live in the WA and considering this size
Appreciate you making the video. Another way to skin this cat: pull the tire towards the hitch while raising it. No torch, no bending. Been running that setup for quite some time now!
Please do a walk around with ur build. Would also like to see the whole build on flat surface too. I'm interested if 2" in the rear gives rake or I need to go 3"
2 cents.... Air the tire back up it gives a more solid clamping surface and flip the tire/rim over so you can access the stem for tire pressure checks.....
I'm curious what pressure you run these tires on the highway and off road. I'm guessing off road it's the 18psi you calibrated your deflators to; is 18psi making any kind of difference with an E load tire?
Great question. Yes, off-road i roll at 18psi especially if I’m on rocky and muddy terrain - feels like rolling on pillows. Love it. On the road, I switch between 32 and 38 psi mostly because every time i go to the shop, they always fill them up to 38 psi. I’ve only run with E load tires on my truck so I don’t have a good basis for comparison, however I’d love to roll with a 16in C load all terrain if it exists! Would be nice to shed some of that tire weight, but last I checked, there weren’t awesome options in the 255/85/16 category
Love my 33s. I'm currently driving from Seattle through California to Pheonix in a trip and love that I can load up the rig and get around 17mpg on the highway and also have that extra clearance when I need to pull off road to camp for the night. Also been a fan on the Cooper's because of their deep tread. Hope that helps
Lol! Good question. Hmm idk, you’d have to measure the your 35 to see. I mean - yes it’s possible, but I’m not sure what adverse effects might be introduced by chopping the muffler. On the other hand, if you haven’t bought the spare 35 yet, you may just want to look into a tire patch kit + portable air compressor to rely on if you get a tread puncture.
@@unpavd Any updates on the rubber melting? Thinking of doing the same thing but concerned with the tire melting after awhile touching that exhaust pipe.
Nope the chain is fine. I’ve driven 4K miles with the spare tucked in the back and it’s been fine. Good call out tho - I’m not sure what the tensile strength of that chain is but I’m guessing it would take quite a bit of tugging to break it
Sounds good. I think once you hammer back those metal ears that tire should fit since the 285 and 255 have relatively similar heights (32.7-33.1”) the 285 is approx .5” wider than mine, but i don’t think you’ll run into probs there. Good luck!
