Fit Chess Pieces and Board Size 

Google tells me that the current tournament guidelines are for the square size to not exceed 75% of of King's base diameter. This makes sense to me. The suggested 78% in this video seems crowded. In the end game where fast King moves are made , a 78% diameter runs into imprecise King placements on squares and likely to sit on borders. I find that 72 to 75% is more useful as a guideline. It is neat and precise for real time play without crowding. When buying expensive sets and boards all this is very important for a long-term investment.

A simple system is: put a king on d4, a queen on e5, and you should have space to move a bishop on the h1-a8 diagonal without touching the pieces, but not too much space, just enough.

I usually divide the base size with the square size and you will also get a % as well. This is how I do it.

Is 1.7" base king too big for 2" square?
