A step by step guide to fitting Oxford heated premium hot grips on a 2015 Honda CBR650F motorcycle.
I show how to remove the bar ends, getting the original grips off the handlebars, correctly positioning the new grips, the modification I needed to make to the throttle side, fitting and securing the new heated grips, mounting the intelligent controller and then how to wire up and route all the cables back to the battery to get a nice tidy install.

Just finished installing the hot grips on my CBR650R. Really grateful for this video, watched it several times before I plucked up the courage to buy and fit myself - I’m not one of nature’s naturally gifted mechanics! Very happy with the result, housing the connectors was a pain but got there in the end. My arthritic fingers thank you.

This is the sort of video I like! Not your "perfect" 2 minute nonsense from the manufacturer, with clean tools and no problems, but instead a comprehensive, step-by-step guide including all the stumbling blocks you're likely to encounter along the way. This fella obviously wanted to preserve the original grips, whereas if it was me, I'd probably just cut the old grips off and chuck them away. Only reason for that would be, once your heated grips are on with the Superglue, they're never coming off again, so no point in keeping the original grips really. Including fitted grips is a good plus point if you're selling the bike on in the future. Only other thing I'd suggest people do, if you have to file the throttle with a metal file, I'd be covering up any paintwork in case the file slips and scratches it.

A superb video. Clear. straight forward and totally understandable . I watched it because I wasn't sure what adhesive to use as my throtle grip was slipping and pulling the supply cable out of the headstock.

Oxfords make all other aftermarket grips look and feel like garbage. The Brits really did these right.

I installed the grips and ran the wires and did a test before I glued and zip tied everything in place just to be sure everything is in good working order.

Huh found this video after I did mine already on cbr650r, I ended up doing the same thing had to smooth down almost the whole plastic tube with tool then use a good amount of glue for extra security. Other options were buying an expensive aftermarket throttle tube and changing whole thing out so figured instead of doing that might as well change the stock one and if needed get it down the road. Then again, who would take OFF heated grips after unless they stopped working in which case likely just replace anyways

A good video, thanks for sharing. Disappointed with Oxford quality though, the cable connectors are rubbish, the pins push back out when connecting the cables! (their battery charger/conditioner connectors are the same poor quality).. I found fitting the throttle grip fiddly and a bit of a pain filing it down to make it fit .. 🙃😊. Well done for the video. 👍

For anyone watching thinking of putting these on the newer CBR/CB650R you need to use a impact driver to remove them as the bar end weights are now inside the handlebar. The whole lot will spin even with duct tape.

i was still able to with a tape and screwdriver !

I went a little aggressive, taped , cloth folded and used a channel locks to hold. First one no issues . Second one SMALL nick as I was rushing and didn’t put the cloth around very end :/ Oh well just spun it towards the ground, problem fixed 🤣

I'd read about using tape and a torque driver, then seeing you using a ratchet with Phillips screwdriver bit saved the day! My bar ends where a pain to get off, though the method used here is great! The Throttle side took quite a bit of filing and knife work but in the end all the rest was fairly straight forward... Thanks for putting this up.

Hi Justin, glad it helped. These things often seem so easy when you read the instructions, but there are always unseen or unknown problems to overcome. I always prefer seeing with my eyes how something is done than just reading instructions!!

Thanks for watching and stopping by. These things always seem so easy to do but it's the little quirks on bikes that you don't get in the instructions of how to deal with...like the throttle side fitting on my 650 - Hopefully it will help someone out!

Thanks. Great video. I’ve seen some people cut the old grips off with a box cutter or Stanley knife. Is there any reason you didn’t go down that route? Would seem to save a lot of time. Thanks.

Can you explain more on the battery sensing? They are not fitted to a switched live so will they run the battery down if accidently left on or if someone messes with while you are away from the bike? Will they switch themselves off if they sense the ignition is off?
@markjackson7650
@markjackson7650 4 года назад
They sense a drop in voltage from the battery and will then switch off. I don't know how reliable the system is though but I would think they are good given that Oxfords products are generally top notch

I just went to the local dealer and said "Please fit these!" But I'm lazy... wouldn't be without them now... although left pinky never stays warm!!
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 7 лет назад
I must admit they were a touch more hassle than I'd hoped for - the throttle side fettling took the time - but i do enjoy doing stuff like this. Also I could fit them exactly as I wanted them not as something thinks I should have them! Hope your dealer didn't charge you a fortune in labour.

think it would have been better if you removed the fuel tank and run it all along the stock cabling. Got my grips yesterday, so will be fitting them this weekend. Just waiting for my relay to be delivered.

Great video. Please beware of the cable ties. They are skin splitting sharp, cut then neatly if you can 🚑👍🧤
@jared123123

That’s what the manual recommends too. I was able to fish the wire from battery through a small opening right on side that had other wires/ harnesses. Swapped out connectors for proper water resistant ones, rubber sealed/ heat shrink. And then had lots of room to connect them near other wiring towards front of gas tank on side inside the fairing . Tucked away in a water tight spot but they’d be safe even if some got in there

Could it be powered by the aux port behind head light, rather than battery
@TheRafeMan
@TheRafeMan 4 года назад
Yes it can. I did this recently on my CBR650R using the accessory socket and it switches on/off with the ignition. You just need to buy the opposite plug and wire the Hotgrips to it first.

Why not simply cut the grips off, there cheap as chips, and I doubt anyone would try and put them back on, plus it’s easier to glue the inside of the tube, but a cracking job, and good video, thumbs up from here 👍

Thanks for your lovely comments. You're right, just couldn't bring myself to cut them!!! Great tip also about gluing the inside of the tube - sounds a much better way, thanks.

Hello mate. I seem to have an issue. When my ignition is turned off the controller is still able to turn on. How do I sirt this out. Cheers
@MiddleagedRider
@MiddleagedRider 6 лет назад
That's not a problem, that should happen. If you have the Oxford grips with the "intelligent control unit" you should find that after a few mins the led light on the controller will begin flashing and then the unit will shortly afterwards switch off. The control unit has to sense a drop in the battery voltage to initiate a shut down and that will take a few mins to register.
