Deaf Smith I forget what plan it is now I know its one of the flying ones my dad would play in in phx in the 50s.most where demolished but one went on to be restored and my dad always told me the p40 only cost 400!!!!

@@njsullyalex2744 Considering that it is a P-38F, recovered from New Guinea, and on of the pilots who flew it here has confirmed it, I'm pretty sure it's a real combat aircraft.

I know it is 2 years late, but I believe 1 still has functioning turbochargers, or at least did recently. The ex-Tallichet bird, formally in Richard Bong's markings but since sold and repainted (to Yagen, maybe?)...

The Allison engine was designed to be reversible. You flipped the crankshaft over end-for-end, added an idler gear to the front to keep the accessories spinning the usual way, and rewired the right-side cylinder bank to get the proper firing order. That's just about what it took to turn an Allison the other way.

Range, airspeed, and armament, the P-51 was better. P-38 was widely used, but was primarily in the Pacific Theater while the P-51 served in pretty much every theater. the P-51 was also cheaper to produce. as an escort, the P-51 could tangle with ME-109 and FW-190 better than the P-38 could.

@@Panzer-535 Actually, the P-38 maintained the greatest combat radius of any U.S fighter. At no time did a current production P-51 ever have a greater combat radius than a current production P-38. As far as armament, the P-38 was a better gun platform, it did not deal with convergence, the four Browning M2 50 caliber machine guns, and the 20MM cannon all fired in a 30" circle from point blank to maximum effective range, making it far easier to get the full weight of fire concentrated on target. And the 20MM was equally adept at shattering wing spars, and exploding fuel tanks. Olds, Ilfrey, Morris, Blumer, and Lowell all did well in the P-38, just to name a few. The 9th and 15th AF had considerable success with the P-38 against the Luftwaffe, as did several individual pilots in the 8th AF, it was the 8th AF command that caused its own issues with the P-38. The P-38 was also successful in North Africa against the Luftwaffe. In the Pacific, the P-38 accounted for more Japanese aircraft than all other aircraft in the Air Corps combined. The Navy aircraft outscored the P-38 simply because more Japanese targets were available to them. The P-38 was not without issues, it required a better pilot, and a better ground crew that worked harder, it required more fuel and more maintenance. But twin engines made it very survivable and more likely to bring the pilot home.

the Clark Field aircraft (weren't P-38) were dug up and scrapped in the 1960s during a clean up of unexploded ordinance and removal of military equipment. the second area of buried aircraft (also not P-38) were dug up in the 90s when a powerplant was built. you may be referring to the Burma Spitfires, of which 140 aircraft were found buried, but not by a volcano. if a burial of P-38 exists, highly doubt you're going to find one of Richard Bong's, Thomas McGuire's, or Charles MacDonald's spare aircraft.
