Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. My uncle flew combat in the P-38 in the MTO. He earned his 50 mission crusher, came home , and became a civilian again. I loved hearing him tell us of his experiences. I think that it was the highlight of his life, in spite of the challenges of being in combat and seeing fellow pilots killed. He went through a brief period of depression upon his return home, because of the change from the adrenaline rush of combat and the task of "saving the world", to just being another regular Joe. It was an adjustment for him.

On one of these You tube they interviewed a pilot that flew 38s in combat in the Pacific the run ways were so short and the 38 was so laden with ordance and fuel he had to push down on the brakes with both feet with his back against the seat get full power up and let loose the brakes to get it off the ground in time to clear the field . He messed up his back because of this after the war flying P 38s he went into Accounting now talk about and adjustment . You know these dudes missed that adrenaline he had to be depressed from such a change

Thanks so much. Every type of war bird had (and has) its own distinct sound. The P-38 is no exception. Its hum, purr and growl, especially the turbocharged version, is its voice. My dad was a P-38 pilot in World War 2. He flew photo recon over Europe. My mother had a cousin who was a P-38 mechanic in the Pacific. The P-38 stirs my up like no other. Again, my thanks.

@@FlyWirescottperdue he was my father’s best friend and they flew many missions together with the Head Hunters squadron in New Guinea. The only time that I got to see Ruff Stuff was at his funeral. The best funeral that I have ever been to, the whole town came out to celebrate his life!

Can't imagine the feeling of being allowed to fly such a rare and magnificent aircraft! Great video. Also, another example of an unassuming man who reveals something you never would have expected. This reminded me of an experience I had a long time ago when Petaluma airport had just been paved and the only building was an old house that was being used as the only FBO on the field. There was this quiet older guy named Ray. He hung around a lot but didn't say much. He didn't fly, though he would occasionally make a comment that suggested he had flown. I pretty much discounted Ray as just a wannabe pilot that never got his act together. A few years later, I came across Ray working in the local hardware store and stopped to say hello. After a few questions he started telling me his story. This quiet man, who I had so easily discounted, had flown P-38s in the Pacific during the war. Afterwards he flew many other military aircraft. After leaving the military, he bought a Pitts and flew air shows all over the country for years. I left that hardware store feeling thoroughly ashamed of myself for arrogantly discounting this war hero and amazing pilot. I could have learned so much from him if I had just taking the time to get to know this small, quiet, gentleman. It taught me a lesson about judging people...

Norbert Ruff was a cousin of my family in Bloomer, Wisconsin remember meeting him a few times also remember Lefty Gardner flying his P- 38 at Reno for years and now is in Germany with the Red Bull team polished and looks great

In reply to the Mosquito Crowd I say to stand behind a -38 on a full power water-injected and turbocharged takeoff. The sound is "waterfall plus bulldozer sounds" and as she slingshots down the runway it switches over first to the sound of kettledrums and then finally frying bacon. There is nothing else like it - so please know whereof you speak.

Thanks for this video! I have a love for the airplane as my dad flew those in WWII in Italy. He never talked to much about it and we only have a few papers from those days. I watch everything I can about the P38!

Note the counter rotating props. Earlier versions of the P-38 did not have the advantage of this design, which added approximately 30 knots of speed. In addition, later versions in the Pacific theater of operations were delivered unpainted as camouflage painting was no longer as important as the weight saved (coinciding with ever increasing air superiority), and those versions were, of course, a beautiful glinting silver! In my personal opinion, all P-38’s were, and are, absolutely gorgeous, as is Ruff Stuff! ❤️

The *ONLY* P-38's built without counter rotating propellors and engines were the few that were built for the British, who requested that all engines and propellors rotate clockwise, and the turbochargers and attending systems be deleted. Performance and handling for the aircraft were poor, the contract was never completed, and the Army Air Corps graciously accepted the planes built for the British, and used them as trainers. All other P-38 aircraft, including the XP-38, had counter rotating propellors and engines. The counter rotating propellors and engines did not affect speed. What it did do was create a "torque neutral" high performance aircraft.

Considering the XP-38, with its inward-spinning props, made 410 mph on its dash from Ohio to New York-- propellor orientation did nothing to affect the speed of the design.

As a kid a few times I had the privilege of accompanying my Dad to work night shift mechanic for Braniff International. One of the old mechanics had been a USAAC fighter crew chief on Guadalcanal. He soberly told me about how at first when they flew P-39s and P-40s they would send them all out to attack the Japanese - but they never got all of them or their pilots back after a mission... sometimes they didn't get half of them back. And then he would brighten up. He'd say how it was a "different story" when they got P-38s - "man we'd send 'em all out and here they would all come back - out of ammo, - some on flying on one engine - but they were giving 'em HELL and lived to tell the tale !" So, yeah - I alway did share his affection for these old warrior-planes.

Years ago a friend and I stopped by Granite Falls…A Fagen mechanic gave us a hanger tour…I climbed on the wing of the 38 and took cockpit picture… .I’ve always thought …Why didn’t I sit in it???

Jeff Ethell made a 40-minute startup takeoff and in-flight video of him flying a P-38 back in the 90's. It's on VHS and I think there is a copy available on U-Tube. Watching him going through the before start checklist and fuel selector settings was interesting, a complex airplane. The video cameras back then were big, I think it was mounted to the seat frame over his right shoulder. The takeoff acceleration was amazing, about 12 seconds to unstick the nosewheel, almost as soon as the throttles were full forward, he was flying.

Scott that is one Beautiful work of World War 2 art. I love the P-28. Those V-12 Allison's have such a distinctive noise and tone on those engines. And boy are they fast. You sure were blessed to be able to fly that old girl. Thank you for taking us along for the flight.

One of the first opportunities I had to fly in a light aircraft was in the late 60s as a Civil Air Patrol cadet at Columbine Airport in south Jefferson County Colorado - now long gone. I recall that day as we got out to the airplane on the ramp that a beautiful powder blue P38 was just taking off. That was a great day for a young person.

Awesome. Some trivia. I believe Charles lindbergh discovered that you could fly the P-38 oversquared and significantly increase it's range. Helpful in theatre. Thanks for another interesting and entertaining video Scott.

Interesting factoid, thanks! Many don’t know that Lindbergh flew 50 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of WW2 as a civilian consultant and was unofficially credited with shooting down an enemy aircraft.

@@mpetry912 I used to fly a Cherokee Arrow and usually flew it at 24 InHg and 2400 rpm, 24/24 for short. I could bring the manifold pressure back to 20 InHg, then pull the rpm back to 2000, and since the landing gear retracted, it would fly faster than a fixed gear Cherokee or 172 while burning less fuel. I had to increase the rpm to 2400 before bringing the manifold pressure back up to 24 InHg because it wasn’t supposed to be operated at an over square setting. I’m sure there are planes that can be, but I never flew one.

Yes but when they rotated the same direction they turned real tight in the direction they rotated. Not so much the other way though. Makes sense. The counter rotation was to their advantage in many ways.

The Japanese really feared the P-38. Called it the Fork Tailed Devil. Richard Bong made it sing.

That was awesome I love the P38 I was at Chino air show in 2013 and there were 5 flying it’s on RU-vid One of the Great Warbird air shows around and the greatest collection. Happy New Year .

Great video!! I have photos of Ruff Stuff on the field at Oshkosh 2008. Had the privilege of seating in the cockpit of Ruff Stuff in 2011.

My fathers uncle moved to Ca. in 1930 something. Lockheed first assignment for him was to figure how to get the guns in the nose. He worked there until he retired. My spouses grandfather was a paint engineer. Lockheed hired him to make a paint that made the airplane hard to see and paid him in stock. family still has the stock as the P38 still has the guns although they are probably non functional.

I was at Oshkosh when the yellow nose art was being hand painted by someone a step ladder. It was fun to watch and more fun when the plane flew. You are right about the unique sound of that particular plane!!

Erik Hokuf did the restoration and his brother painted it just like they would have in the Pacific. It was cool!

Just a small correction, Scott. Warhawks Inc., now Fagen Fighters Restoration, did the restoration. Erik was part of the crew but did not do it on his own.

Great stuff by here! An early G model, type that flew the intercept of Admiral Yamamato fateful flight 🙄. A truly revolutionary fighter & must be quite the thrill / honor to fly! To be able to fly the best US air superior fighter in 1943 in the P-38, of the 1960's with the F-4's and 1980's with the F-15E's Mr. Purdue has quite the resume! Best wishes to Scott (safe flying..) and all in the New Year!

Couple take aways from the video... I didn't realize that I had actually met you until I saw you in the video, which gave the brief conversation we had context. (2008 by the way) I just had a simple question about operating the airplane and you were more than happy to answer. 2nd... How nice to see and remember Ed Bowlin. What a Gentleman he was. Also Jim Hagedorn who is one of the most generous guys out there in the Warbird community. Would love to hear more about how you managed to get involved flying the P-38, and what you had to do to get qualified to do so. Happy New Year to you.
