Welcome to the second installment of Five to Try, the series where I highlight 5 games for an Atari console! This time I'm recommending five "deep cuts" or hidden gems from the Atari 7800 library! Maybe the last episode featured games that were too obvious for your taste. Well let's see if this one does i for you then! And I'm not going to limit myself to affordable games or anything like that. Just stuff I think you might've missed and might like!
Next time I do a Five to Try I think we'll be looking at Atari 2600 Late Release games! So make sure your subscribed and have notifications turned on for that one! Thanks for checking out the video!
If you are interested in advertising or partnering, or even just talk you can email me at 7800progamer@gmail.com
You can also follow me on Twitter (X), Instagram or Facebook by searching for the 7800progamer!
The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us
Check out my written reviews and all of Vinnies 20 years of hard work here

Thanks for watching and please subscribe. It does way more than you'll ever know for me.

I always love seeing classic pre-jaguar Atari stuff. I never had a 7800, by 1986 I had already moved on from my beloved 2600 to the NES and never looked back

It's worth going back to and 2600 plus makes it more accessible for modern televisions although it's not perfect. New two button joysticks haven't been released for it yet and there are some compatibility issues that might be corrected with firmware updates. Or just emulate it. 7800 isn't bad to revisit even for just the curiosity of it

I remember how i bought tower toppler for the 7800 complete in pakage and poster for just $25 buck excluding shipping costs,it was well worth it considering it’s a hardware pushing game and it’s included poster is just freaking AWESOME as it also does show both mario,luigi and donkeykong on it,yes ladies & gentleman,back then atari was allowed to use nintendo’s most important onto their posters,boxes and ccommercials since some nintendo games did also appear on atari systems,wich triggered my mind to also became a huge atari fan,especially since i was always a big nintendo fan before that😁

Yeah that poster is pretty sweet. I really like Tower Toppler but I don't see many people regarding it too highly on the 7800. I even heard a few people call it bad and I honestly can't fathom that. But it is confusing when you turn it on and it starts cycling towers I'll give people that!

Desert Falcon is one of my favorites on the system. I did not have it back in the day. I picked Karateka over it (bad choice). Maybe thats part of why i love it, some sort of nostalgic righting the wrongs of the past. Either way it is probably my most played 7800 game.

That's really cool to hear. And yeah, you definitely picked the wrong one back in the day but a ton of us wanted Karateka to be good and gave it a chance.

@@TheAtariNetwork I don't hate Karateka as much as most do. I remember it being my favorite 7800 game and I actually beat it a couple times both as a kid and as an adult. I had a pretty poor library Pole position 2 (7800), Centipede (7800), Karateka (7800), Choplifter (7800), Donkey Kong Jr (2600), Kung-fu master (2600) and Yars Revenge 2600. In 1988 there were very few games out for the 7800. I ended up talking my mom into getting a SMS that Christmas. Other than picking up Rampage, my 7800 sat in mothballs until 2005 when I started collecting for it. I often wonder if I had got Desert Falcon and Food Fight or Xevious instead of Choplifter and Karateka would I have stuck it out with the 7800.

@@tomflanagan3889 yeah I recently completed Karateka for the first time and while I didn't dislike it as much as I thought, it's still far from an enjoyable game in my book. I had very few 7800 games growing up but a ton of 2600 games. But I remember the 7800 games feeling really special to me, like those were the cool more advanced games compared to everything else I had. The 7800 is a great console to collect for today in my opinion.

The omission of Desert Falcon in the Atari 50th collection is mystifying to me. Also I'll say it again -- the 7800 has, hands down, the very best version of Joust that you can play. Better than the arcade, better than the ST. The best version of Joust that there is. It was made by GCC and plays like a dream.
@TheAtariNetwork
@TheAtariNetwork 6 месяцев назад
Oh yeah, Joust is excellent on the 7800. I think I'll do a video on the 7800 going over some of the best arcade ports to get...

I had all those games except Waterski. I'll say it's almost mandatory to use the Proline with Winter Games, while Tower Toppler plays much better with the Europad. Desert Falcon was my favorite out of 5, but Radar Lock for 2600 spent more time in my 7800 than any of those 5 mentioned.

Good video and good advice on Tower Toppler!

I think it's something that would be nice to know before buying it because it confused me and many others on Facebook when you start it up and the game just cycles through towers endlessly...

I would include Donkey Kong Junior. Not counting sound, this is a fantastic port of the game. If released in 1984, this would have been the best port pit there. However, by its 1988 release date, the game was considered an ancient relic.

It's not a bad port of Donkey Kong Jr at all. I enjoy that one too along with the original Donkey Kong

It's strange I remember seeing 5200 and 7800 in the movie " cloke and dagger" and was jealous looking at my 2600 🤗

Yay! A video I like. I fully support your branching out to all things Atari, but ProSystem is what drew me to the channel in the first place. I like the second, fourth and fifth pick. Water Ski broke my bank trying to get a physical copy! The odd control and scrolling on the 7800 remind me of a challenging Toobin’ session but in reverse direction. Worth the trouble.

I understand a lot of people subscribed for the 7800 content especially before the name change. So I plan on doing at least 1 video a month on the 7800 and there may even be more that includes the 7800 games, etc. The first video of January SHOULD be on the last game releases of the 7800 but even if it gets pushed it should come out in January. So make sure you guys have the bell clicked so you can see when 7800 stuff is released! And thanks for the support!

I did write off Desert Falcon but now I plan on getting that one next.

I honestly wrote off Desert Falcon too but I'm glad I came back around. It's a game that got better the more time I invested with it, but I'm sure it's not for everybody.
