The fact that you had to include a homebrew, an unreleased game, and Planet Smashers shows how lackluster the 7800's library was, especially when it came to exclusives.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair 11 месяцев назад
There were others I could have included, but the 7800 does have a very small library for a console that sold around 5 million units.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'd add Ballblazer to the list as well, even though it was also on the Atari 8 bits. It's too bad that Tank command is so incredibly rare to find. I have to rely on emulation to enjoy it.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair 2 года назад
Ballblazer was also released for Nintendo Famicom, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, MSX and Atari 5200 too - so I really don't think it qualifies as an exclusive!

There were another two unfinished prototypes that were later finished by the homebrew community, both of which I own on cart (from Good Deal Games). Both are scrolling space shooters that were under development by Tynesoft. "Plutos" (vertically scrolling) and "Sirius" (horizontally scrolling). I have every game in your video except the two Froggo games. Froggo Games started in 1987, supporting the 2600 and 7800. In 1989 they announced that they had another 4 games in development for the 7800, but they folded before the games ever saw the light of day.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair Год назад
I don't believe that Sirius or Plutos were finished, just released as near complete prototypes as they were found. I have both of them myself, real shame they were never released. What is funny about them is that the UK company that created them TyneSoft had a horrible reputation, most of their home computer games were abysmal, but these two 7800 games are excellent.

@@TheLairdsLair I bought both from Good Deal Games. From their site: PLUTOS Plutos is a long lost unreleased prototype developed by Tynesoft for the Atari 7800, and appeared to be a loose port of the ST/Amiga game of the same name. A partially compiled version of Plutos was discovered by Curt Vendel but was unstable and crashed frequently. The source code for Plutos was discovered in 2008 and thanks to the efforts 7800 enthusiasts Robert DeCrescenzo, Mitchell Orman, and Eckhard Stolberg, the game was compiled and now runs properly on stock 7800 hardware. SIRIUS Sirius is a long lost unreleased prototype developed by Tynesoft for the Atari 7800, and possibly a port of the 1990 Amiga game Sirius 7 . A partially compiled version of Sirius was discovered by Curt Vendel but was unstable and crashed frequently. The source code for Sirius was discovered in 2008 and thanks to the efforts 7800 enthusiasts Robert DeCrescenzo, Mitchell Orman, and Eckhard Stolberg, the game was compiled and now runs properly on stock 7800 hardware. It sounds like both prototypes were buggy and in an uncompiled state. Both play fine on a stock 7800, as advertised. Two more scrolling shooters for the 7800, which is great as the system didn't have that many to begin with. I've read heard various British gamers talk down in regards to Tynesoft, but these two games are good. The 2600 games by Froggo Games are terrible. I own some of them. Based on your video they seemed to finally be making good games by the time they got to the 7800.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair Год назад
Yeah, they had to be fixed to get working, especially as both games would have been PAL. But they weren't completed sadly. All of Froggo's 2600 games are re-releases from other people, their 7800 games are actually original.

I had a 7800. Great system we got it cheep at Toys R Us in Canada. It played all the 2600 games so it ended up being the system we used for years. The North American joysticks sucked! mine broke on the B button side. We could not play Dubble Dragon on it without it!

Actually if you count just the United States of America, it actually came in second, ahead of the Sega Master System. In Europe it finished in second among the consoles ahead of the NES. It's just those Japanese jingoists who have a one-way wall with video games that kept Atari out of the Land of the Rising Sun, and that's the main reason why Atari finished third world wide.

Ironically I had bought both the Atari 7800 ProSystem and the Nintendo Entertainment System. I liked the Atari 7800 ProSystem due to some of the some of the exclusive game cartridges and its backwards compatibility with the Atari 2600 VCS. What I didn't like about the Nintendo NES were the original keypad controllers which are absolutely terrible when playing basic joystick controller type games, this is why I bought some genuine joystick controllers made by Beeshu for the Nintendo NES.

I couldn't decide between Planet Smashers, F18 Hornet and Planet Smashers for the final spot. I went with Planet Smashers because it was a shoot 'em up, something the 7800 doesn't have a lot of. But yeah, Motor Psycho is probably the better game.

It's amusing they didn't get the Munster rights & used Grampa quasi legally. This especially obvious because Eddie Munster would have been the grandson of the Grampa in question not the character in the game

Mario bros and pac man are classics on the 7800 as well, i wish you included those games instead of those two homebrew games because that would be more fair.

@johneygd
@johneygd 8 месяцев назад
@@TheLairdsLair well uh because they are top games,but it’s true that they are not exclusives,well with this in mind,are those the only exclusives for the 7800? Well scrapyard dog seems to be an exclusive as well since the lynx version is totally different despite it shares the exact same name,mmmm.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair 8 месяцев назад
No, there are more. Scrapyard Dog counts yes, as it's different to the Lynx version, there is also Motor Psycho and a few more.
@watchsilverback
@watchsilverback 2 года назад
I would’ve taken out a few games like tank command and planet smashers as they aren’t very good and added scrapyard dog and basketbrawl. Yes they are on the lynx but the lynx versions are very different games and that’s a handheld anyway. I would’ve added ballblazer as it was a console exclusive in the us and maybe Europe but idk for sure. The famicom had a version but it wasn’t as good in comparison. Desert falcon was an impressive Zaxxon style game that was a launch title and food fight was never ported to any other console at the time. Overall the 7800 has a strong library and those homebrew games and we’re definitely worth featuring.
@watchsilverback
@watchsilverback 2 года назад
And I know ballblazer was on computers of the time but I mean it was exclusive to the North American 7800 as it’s the only dedicated console to get it that I know of.
@watchsilverback
@watchsilverback 2 года назад
And I’m not sure if they were on computers but since missing in action was included I would sirius and plutos as better exclusive shooters that were completed but not released until many years later
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair 2 года назад
Ballblazer was also on the 5200 and Food Fight was also on the XEGS - neither remotely qualify as exclusives. Basketbrawl is pretty similar, Scrapyard Dog is a little bit different and I did briefly consider it because of that. Plutos was actually on the Atari ST first. But I am going to do a "More great exclusives" video too, so you might see some more of your candidates there ;-)
@watchsilverback
@watchsilverback 2 года назад
@@TheLairdsLair your right ballblazer was on the 5200. I don’t know much about the xegs either. If your including more homebrew rikki and vikki is also on steam but via a 7800 emulator that was specially written, I can link to my source on that,so it may be another gray area. Failsafe might not count because it’s technically inspired by counter measure, but baby pac man, pac man collection and time salvo are all worth consideration.

I've got MIA. Those visual glitches don't happen on real hardware (I don't know why RU-vidrs covering the game don't point that out. This isn't the first video that made MIA look like Epileptic Seizure: the Game). Honestly, it's arguably the best looking game on the system. That said, the game isn't really finished. There's pickups that don't do anything and while most levels seem fine, others seem unfinished or broken. I haven't succeeded in this yet myself, but I've heard the game can be beat, but clearing some levels almost requires using a walkthrough.
@TheLairdsLair
@TheLairdsLair 3 года назад
There is a finished version out there somewhere (hopefully). I am actually friends with Chuck Peavey who programmed it and he has confirmed the game was complete and he did have a complete version on a cartridge as well as all the source code. However he cannot locate it and thinks that it's either in storage somewhere or he lost it. But there is still hope. I was going to have F-18 Hornet instead, but really wanted to put MIA in there because it's so great.

@@rpgspree The Tramiels weren't such great CEOs for keeping ATARI a major company . Their distribution just got worse as time went on . I BARELY was able to get a CD-ROM add-on for the Jaguar . They didn't run ATARI like the other console companies . ATARI never sold the Jaguar at a loss like other companies because they couldn't afford to .
