Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholson in 'Side Order of Toast' 

I never get tired of watching this scene. Very short but so perfect and such a statement about what was going on in the 60's. A classic that never gets old. I don't mind the editing at the end as long as the original was kept intact.

Being on the road is tough and lonely. Waitresses can really affect a trip. The way he took out his road exhaustion on her was outstanding.

I've never seen the movie before so I thought your edit was how it actually was and like the speed increasing was him going over the event retrospectively in the car after he left, getting angrier and angrier as he thought about it.

August 13, 2022 - Oddly, I don't think that I've ever seen the entire film Five Easy Pieces, but like many people. I have my favorite Iconic film scenes. I've always liked Jack Nicholson's films, and his persona in those films. For some reason 'side order of Toast' came to me today, and I'm please to have found this video of it.

We go to this Denny's once in awhile. It looks exactly the same except for the view out the window. There are evergreen trees filling in the landscape. The food is really good and wait staff are very nice (now).

If he didn't make the "hold it between your knees" comment she might have brought him the toast.

I'd like a plain omelette, no potatoes on the plate, a cup of coffee and a side order of wheat toast. Waitress : I'm sorry, we don't have any side orders of toast. I'll give you an English muffin or a coffee roll. Bobby : What do you mean you don't make side orders of toast? You make sandwiches, don't you? Waitress : Would you like to talk to the manager? Palm Apodaca : Hey, mac... Bobby : Shut up. [to the waitress] Bobby : You've got bread and a toaster of some kind? Waitress : I don't make the rules. Bobby : OK, I'll make it as easy for you as I can. I'd like an omelette, plain, and a chicken salad sandwich on wheat toast, no mayonnaise, no butter, no lettuce, and a cup of coffee. Waitress : A number two, a chicken salad sand. Hold the butter, the lettuce, and the mayonnaise, and a cup of coffee. Anything else? Bobby : Yeah, now all you have to do is hold the chicken, bring me the toast, give me a cheque for the chicken salad sandwich, and you haven't broken any rules. Waitress : You want me to hold the chicken, huh? Bobby : I want you to hold it between your knees. [Palm Apodaca sniggers] Waitress : [points at a sign behind her] You see that sign, sir? Yes, you'll all have to leave! I'm not taking any more of your smartness and sarcasm! Bobby : You see this sign? [he sweeps all the glasses off the table onto the floor]

I'll be honest, the moment she started in with that condescending attitude, I'd start getting angry. When she kept it up, I'd have cussed her out. Now, with her speaking to Jack, I was expecting something a lot more aggressive. I mainly knew him from his middle years, so it should make sense.

You took a magic scene and crucified it at the end with that editing, What were you thinking???

What is it with Jack and restaurant scenes? As Good asit Gets there was a whole lotta dining scenes. They're Great!

What an actor

I had a similar situation at a Mexican restaurant. I ordered something they said no breakfast after 10. I said you make a burrito with the same ingredients they said yes. I then said give me a burrito no tortilla put it on a plate add rice and beans charge me for any extras. The girl looked stunned, I left.

The audience is supposed to thrill to this: he really showed her! That’s how I reacted to the scene when I saw it. Thanks to Studs Terkel I now realize what an asshole Nicholson’s character was, and what a dope I was to fall for it.

Great scene, great film, but are the car scenes chucked in really necessary?

He proceeded to move in to a large hotel in Colorado and try to murder his family. Excellent prequel.

Just like woosieproductions did a bit of the rebel, Jack Nicholson tore up the table.

I must confess that I enjoy watching this scene. I think Robert Eroica Dupea's (Jack Nicholson's) behavior ended up being entirely inexcusable, so I'm a hypocrite. Still, I enjoy the scene.

Hilarious.

One of Jack Nicholson's greatest films next to Carnal Knowledge. His weakest was The Shining. Stanley Kubrick selected the wrong cast, especially with Shelly Duvall. Could have been great with another actress. I would have chosen Jack Nicholson with Karen Black for the Shining. They acted so well together in this film. RIP Karen. You were gorgeous. Especially her slight Tropia eyes and nice body.

Better would have been to leave the editing of this scene to Chris Holmes and Bob Rafelson (dir), the original film editors. But I get your penchant for being creative with one of the best scenes ever in a feature film...just maybe make a disclaimer that you changed it!
