Apparently grocery stores do this too with some items like rotisserie chicken. They sell cheap and lose money on it but it gets customers in the store where they'll buy more food
I paid $9 for a Nathan’s dog at a hair show I went to.. definitely was NOT worth it (but they didn’t have too many other options so I didn’t have a choice.. Crazy how much food costs lately especially considering the quality has dropped dramatically

Five Guys' Hot Dog, if I'm not mistaken, costs so much because you can get any and all toppings on it for no extra charge. They, as well, provide a larger variety of toppings for your hot dog. It's not a GOOD DEAL, but like with their burgers, the sheer customizability they provide give them a niche in the fast food game, also with just a simply better tasting "base product", they have their appeal. Where else at a large, nationwide scale, will you find a fully customizable hot dog? In this original video, he does not provide a full context about the product, a better comparison by him would be a, by weight, value comparison of a "fully loaded" Costco hot dog, and a "fully loaded" Five Guys hot dog. Taste really should not be considered with this test because if you throw everything they have at a Five Guys for their hot dog it won't taste good. It's a pick and choose game, any way you test it, the full, proper appeal of the hot dog won't be measured.
From where I live, one glance on the Five Guys Food Menu can already blow your freaking mind, everything is so goddam expensive, one bottled water alone can get you literally Two 2L of Coke in the grocery store. What a Fcking Rip-off 🤡
I got the grilled cheese cheeseburger per tick tock trend, got a medium (whatever they call it) fry and a small strawberry shake.... $24. Could have had a $26 large meat lovers pizza from the best shop in town for that. It's absolute insanity. The grilled cheese cheeseburger was ok, could make it better at home for $6
It's because Costco actually willingly loses money on hotdog sales since they know a bunch of people will show up with the intention of just getting the cheap hotdogs but will still most likely end up spending money on something else in the store It's a marketing trick to bring in more potential customers
I would argue that Starbucks drinks are way better than anything Five Guys offers they used to have burgers at a decent price and decent quality now they're just a total rip-off

Probably the worst health decision I've ever made was eating costco pizza at almost every lunch break I had for about a year. It sounded like a good deal atm but health-wise I was basically poisoning my own body.

@@myang12003 Costco pizza is 18 inches. It's a nice large pizza for $10. They are also very consistent which is no surprise when you see their robot applying the sauce very evenly on each pizza.
Even Sams Club is comparable to Costco. now if they would both get into the Cheese Burger game and compete with the rest of them and maybe offer a chicken sandwich,

The drink by itself at Costco used to cost $0.49 implying that the hot dog by itself was a dollar. The drink now cost $0.69 and my niece said "there's no way a hot dog that big cost less than a dollar! The hot dog at five guys is a normal one and mommy paid ten dollars! That's not normal auntie!" So I bought her the hot dog and the plus tax made the hot dog's total be $1.69. I think her mind broke after that. She wouldn't stop staring at it with wide eyes, like how was she supposed to eat that. She kept saying "this a $1 hot dog?"

As an employee, the 1.50 hotdog/soda combo is my daily lunch. Edit: I don't like it, but its cheap and convenient for someone who also needs to pay rent and bills. Leave me alone people.
Costco hotdogs were the reason I shopped with my mother because when we were checking out, she'd hand me a different card and let me go get us both a hotdog. She got pepsi, and I got lemonade. I still shop with her and we both get pepsi, and it's really made me appreciate my mother in my teen years where I get to see how much work she puts into keeping me and my siblings well fed and loved.
For the people saying “but you end up spending $200 on groceries”. If you bought those same items from a typical grocery store, i wouldnt be surprised if it cost you $500. Those $200 in groceries from costco are going to last more than just a week. Especially if you bought big snack boxes, you basically have snacks for weeks. Huge value
Their frozen section has legit saved my life. I work so much that I can’t really cook for myself much at all, and they’ve got all this delicious ready-to-microwave food for basically the price of cooking.
For real, when I was younger, my mom used to buy us s pizza slice after school letting out and on the way to orchestra practice. OMG! I remember more about that pizza than I do orchestra, and I was in orchestra for 2 to 4 years
The Costco one may be basic, but a hotdog is a hotdog and you cant beat that price. I used to work at Ikea and they had a very similar concept of keeping the exit food good value.
There are so many ways being a COSTCO member can save you a ton. We were down to one income with drastically reduced commission for my family of four in 2009. My kids thought that we were wealthy because we could shop for a lot of our bulk items and grab a roasted chicken for “dinner out “ or really be ballers and get pizza or dogs with sodas. It may sound cheesy, but it gave me some perspective of what wealth really is. Plus, most importantly, my kids were happy. Now that they are adults, they understand as well.
It's the dumb people who buy it that are robbing themselves with those kind of prices. Literally just stupid people who want to feel high class probably.

This week's groceries were $278, and with the cash back at the end of the year, the executive Costco card pays for itself.
That is why they price the food so low, so people spend more on the other stuff that actually drives their profit. It's essentially smaller loss making for higher profit.

I went to five guys once and it was the most mediocre shit. It’s literally for people who have never had homemade burgers/fries before. It has an “authentic” taste because it’s just a basic burger anyone can cook themselves, same with fries. McDonald’s is the best in my opinion because it’s just straightforward simple. If you start ordering different things and expect more from McDonald’s then you start to dislike it. I get a Diet Coke(not to be healthy I just prefer the taste) McDouble extra pickles, medium fry. Never fails. Btw if you ever have extra fries if you put them in a dry pan no extra oil on the stove and cook them in high heat constantly moving them they will reheat back to pretty close to fresh.
Bruh my job serves the same quality burgers for 2.99, but the thing is we only serve employees that work at a specific chemical company and yes we have cajun fries.
Their not stuck in the 90s. They charge reasonably and what should be the price of a normal hotdog. U paying for what u get. Versus going to five guys and paying twice the price for a slightly better product I’m sure they can do at Costco if u ask. Five guys sucks considering their prices and that needs to be addressed

@@JordanO317 don't forget the $60+ a year membership fee is factored into the pricing. They wouldn't be able to sell such cheap hot dogs without those fees. It also draws in new members
Yeh it doesnt matter how amazing you are at cooking. If theres an alternative thats almost 7x cheaper thats always the better option. This is why i always go to stores like Costco and Sams for lunch if i have time.

When I was in college and I had to commute an hour each way to get to school and had no money to buy anything from the food court or pay the $10 to get into the commissary, I was eating a Costco hotdog for breakfast, and a Costco Polish sausage for lunch 4-5 days a week. This man single-handedly kept me from starving.
what i think people are missing here though is 5guys isnt the crazy one- Costco is. Costco looses money on their hotdogs because peoples subscriptions can reimburse them the loss. 5 guys and other companies have nothing like this- so its not a fair comparison. ofc the big corporation that you already pay a monthly fee will be cheaper-
The costco hotdog is only so cheap because it is sold at a loss by costco to try and keep you in the store for longer so you'll buy more things. The five guys hotdog is definitely over-priced though.
The thing I dislike about Five Guys is that they don’t come with any combo or a free drink. That means you have to pay each item separately. And when you add up the price of the burger, fries and drinks it can be pretty expensive.
5 guys coasts off the fact that their food is good compared to fast food places but comparable to any decent burger joint. I’d much rather spend $14 at my local burger restaurant than $23 at a hit or miss 5 guys
