Five Heroes To Play First in Marvel Champions 

Cool video, D20! I’ve only introduced MC to a few friends, more so recently, so this is a timely video. I particularly liked that you brought the nemesis set into your reasoning - with SotP looming via Standard III/constant bad luck, it’s definitely part of the first experience package to consider. For me, I’ve used: Gamora - friends feel like they are going a lot, her ability is passive and just a little bonus Captain America - well rounded, thematic Valkyrie - one specific role to just beat up all the minions, carefully constructed partner deck for me to shore up weaknesses thwarting/confuse to flip down when obligation pops up. But the sole focus and a minion-heavy scenario went down well Captain Marvel - not my personal fave but the card draw is appealing plus the ‘big’ damage from Energy Channel seems to work well Cyclops - thematic X-Men leader, ally spam, less of the support role, big turns. Carefully constructed partner decks for me to amplify my friend # - Storm aggression so a boot camp and Thunderstorm meant his allies dealt a ton of damage, or Iceman to provide attachments to buff Optic Blast more regularly Really liked this video, more content like this would be cool - best puzzle heroes, best in each aspect/aspect archetype, best ‘second game’ heroes for newbies etc. Thanks for your thoughts, again, the holistic approach with nemesis sets, hero-specific cards, mechanics, and common rules mistakes/trip ups was a good approach 🙌

Great list and discussion. I'd like to see someone make simmilar a list of heroes with the best precon decks for those of us newer players who don't want to do much deckbuilding out of the gate.

I really like this idea and the comments are really helpful for adjusting the list. I’d like to see a next hero list. You got the basics down your ready for more complexity what heroes fit that category. Based on your Ant-man comments I would guess Wasp would fit the next hero category.

I think an important thing to remember with this topic is also what lessons Heroes can teach you. So your point about Peter Parker is extremely valid in that respect, because it's great when you can learn how the timing of the game works through the experience of playing a hero. Gives you a chance to ask those questions and go find out the answers.

FYI another question/issue some noobs have with Spider-Man is trying to use the mental from Alter-Ego in Hero form. This usually is due to MTG and people thinking resources “pool”

Gambit is a pretty good one, too. Even though he has a counter resource to manage, it's straightforward and intuitive.

You have a good couple of suggestions of Tester Villains+Module combos for trying out a new deck or whatever? Or even a video for it. I know your favorite villains video you have a few nods at concepts like this, but wasn't sure if you had a good summary video (like this one) but for fun villains that aren't too easy or too hard.

I really hope that Doctor Strange gets reprinted. I missed out earlier!

Really good video and I'd say it should be pinned on the FB or Reddit group. I think Colossus is fairly straight forward and he's one of the bruisers (14+ health)

All but Angel were in my recommended for new players. Personally, Angel is one of my favorite heroes but Ant-Man is a simpler hero for a new player that has a third form. Those not mentioned I use to teach new players are now Jubilee because she uses often the resource symbols as relevant in economy, Captain Marvel, Drax, Spider-Ham, Bishop, Black Panther, Colossus, Groot, Miles Morales, and Venom. I also believe new player assist content is genuinely useful, I just introduced the game to a new player yesterday, who played Parker. I always teach with them playing aggression, most straightforward and satisfying to beatdown baddies.

For me: Spiderman, Cap America, Cap Marvel, Bishop, Wolverine and Miles Morales

My list would be : Spider-Man (PP), Wasp, Captain Marvel, Captain America, Black Panther. Heroes that don’t feel poor or have complicated timings in their 15 hero cards. I’ll watch and see if you came to the same conclusion…

I'm new to Marvel Champions. I was planning to not buy it for a while, since I'm still new to Arkham Horror. But Nerdz Day happened to have Next Evolution expansion on sale a few weeks ago. And I love X-men more than avengers, so I purchased a bunch of hero packs before going to get the core game. I got two things wrong playing Spider Man. The innate ability I got wrong exactly how you described. I did not draw a card when I had minions defend. And the Spider Tracker I played as an interrupt on the villains turn assuming it was meant to be played during the draw an encounter phase. Than I realized after a few games it's meant to be played on your turn. Sadly Captain America and Dr. Strange are nowhere to be found. I've looked for them for a month and they're pretty much vanished off the face of the earth, except for a random copy in German or French. It's a bummer for us new people getting into the game. I've heard a lot about Captain America's cards being good for beginners. But he doesn't exist so I would cut him from the top 5 list until they decide to do a reprint. I may be one of the few gamers teaching themselves how to play 95% of their board games solo. Which includes Marvel Champions. I'm bouncing between true solo and two handed now with the revised core.

Agree with the first 3. But I think Wolverine's "sacrifice your own health" mechanic is the kind of thing that can be difficult to navigate for new players, even with some built-in healing. I also don't think Angel is VERY simple for new players, just that his turns are often quick. I've seen questions about Adaptive Plumage and whether you can then trigger his hero response on the side you flipped from and/or flipped to. I'd probably replace those 2 with Gamora and Bishop.

Fun side note I have one of the large character boards Buy The Same Token made for Ant-man and Wasp. Totally unnecessary but fun to have lol

Liked the video. Have been playing in chunks when I have time. Gives me ideas on aspects and heroes I would like. I have been looking at kits on Hall of Heroes.

Thematically, playing solo,I love the idea to play classic team -ups...UNFORTUNATELY, not able to make a deck for.Example: Cap/ Wolverine/ Black Widow. Deadpool/ Cable.Spiderman/ Wolverine. Cap and Spider- man are the ones I play MOST often.
