Just an FYI for everyone who is new here.. I've recently done some videos talking about the "pros and cons" of living here since we've been here over six months now! That may be something you'll enjoy if you've enjoyed this one! :-)

So what do you mean by backpacking? Like you’re living out of your backpack and staying in the city or you’re going out into the wilderness? If you’re going out into the wilderness i wouldn’t say it’s super safe! Are you aware of the travel restrictions? I guess that would be my first tip because we aren’t really open for tourists without restrictions/ quarantine etc. I’m not really sure about any more tips in general! My only visit to Yellowknife was a driving trip from Detroit, MI.. Prior to my coming into town a CF18A landed hard on a wet runway next to the road into town that runs by the edge of the runway and dislodged a live missle close enough to the roadway that they decided to close the roadway.. The air force had to wait out an explosive team from Cold Bay before they could do anything.. I got stuck in that backup on the hwy for hours, the RCMP even popped by taking soda/pop orders from people stuck in traffic., finally they decided to get everyone to drive through a perimeter gate onto one of the runways, passing the jet and missile at a safe distance and race down that runway towards a different airport gate exit. That was fun. Then while leaving a few days later about 100 miles s of town I blew a tire at 3 AM (it was pretty light out), un packed my luggage , changed the tire and after packing everything back up and was about to leave I noticed a big brown bear maybe 1800 feet away up the hill side watching me as the sun crept over the horizon. It's amazing for a town of under 20K population just how many tall buildings it has. Go anywhere else and a city that small everything is 6 stories or shorter.

Although the speed limit is 45km/hr, you can basically drive to anywhere you are going in less than 10 minutes. I liked the slow speed. If freaked me out after about 4 years there when we went to Seatle and had to drive on the freeway with a _million_ other cars. BTW, when we bought, we bought a trailer. on Catalina drive. Our third month there, it went down to -52C with no wind.
@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 4 года назад
You are so right! 45 feels way too fast depending on the day!! So did you find it was a good investment? It freaks me out a bit when I hear ppl talking about keeping the house in good shape in comparison to owning a house in other provinces..for example doing the roof more frequently, the super high utilities, etc. We can't figure out if it would be a good investment or not. How many years were you here again? People are saying this is the coldest winter in a long time but it hasn't been THAT cold! haha!!

@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 4 года назад
So what.. you don't think it's as nice here as New York? Joking, joking. I honestly have no idea. I know they have trouble because there isn't much land that they can build on (I think because of unresolved land claims from the Native population?) I'm not exactly sure though. And it costs a lot to build and maintain houses here I'm sure that has something to do with it.
@Ren-nk8yf
@Ren-nk8yf 4 года назад
Its because its so expensive for building supplies, contractors, the building seasons isn't as long either. The land itself is also very expensive(200,000 plus) for absolutely nothing on it, you need to blast the rock and then start to build. It adds up super fast.

I'm American and have wanted to visit Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories for awhile now, provided the border between the two countries ever opens up again. Do you know if there are direct flights there from Toronto? Actually, isn't the border of the Northwest Territories even closed to other Canadians as of now due to coronavirus?
@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 4 года назад
Hey! I’m pretty sure you’d have to stop in Edmonton or somewhere first! Not many places would have a direct flight here. Our airport is quite small. And yes our borders are closed unless you come and immediately quarantine for 14 days. So that’s obviously not ideal for travellers. I do hope this all ends soon so that you can make it up for a visit. I have a “visiting Yellowknife” playlist you may want to check out in the meantime! All the best!

During non-covid times, there are multiple daily flights from Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, and weekly flights from Ottawa. Both Calgary and Vancouver have lots of connection flights from major US hubs. Summer is amazing for freshwater fishing, however you will not be able to see the Aurora Borealis until late August. @LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 3 года назад
Not really in parks. There is one place called the Northlands where there is a group of trailers (you can search it on my channel if you’d like- I did a tour of it). The housing prices are so high possibly because of the salaries here...possibly because it’s hard to own land (you can lease it), possibly because it’s expensive to get materials shipped here to build homes.

Why did you move from Ontario to Yellowknife

For my husbands work. He got a full time nursing job here with a good pay and we couldn't find full time coming out of school in Ontario. :-)

@@LifeinYellowknife very good ! Congrats! I am actually looking forward to migrate to Canada through finding job and sponsorship from a regional province . But I don't know much about job opportunities in the IT sector in the northwestern territories. Especifically in Yellowknife. Do you have some idea about that ?
@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 4 года назад
cristian monasterio unfortunately not! The jobs that I see are online. I don’t know anyone in IT. You can watch my jobs video for ideas of where to look but beyond that I’m not sure. Best of luck!

Thank you so much for these videos - I might be moving to Inuvik next year, and it is really difficult to find good solid information about what life in NTW is actually like! There's lots of shots of pretty landscapes and so on, but no nitty gritty of the day to day...this is so useful!!
@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 3 года назад
I'm so glad it's helpful although I'm really not sure it would compare to living in Inuvik! I don't want to steer you wrong! From what I've heard the smaller communities are quite different! Best of luck to you though!

@LifeinYellowknife
@LifeinYellowknife 4 года назад
No, great question! We've only got one case in the whole territory so far (it's here in Yellowknife). I think most people are trying to stay home. The hospital is taking lots of precautions. My husband is screened every shift before work and they aren't letting any visitors etc. How is it where you are?
