Enjoy the lesson everyone, stay away from the negativity that sometimes get posted in the comments here on RU-vid. Happy rudimenting! (is that a word?) - Jared Falk

Thanks for the comment! In this lesson I am using the Pro-Mark 707 (Simon Phillips signature stick). However, I'm in the process of selecting a new type of Pro-Mark stick as I'm just not happy with that one. When I finally settle on an exact model I'll post a video to announce it and explain my reasoning for the choice. Hope that helps! - Jared Falk

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you talking about doing it this way instead of using single strokes? Or to not change the lead hand? Not changing the lead hand would be harder as you'd have three strokes in a row right in the middle of the rudiment. Whatever works for you though! - Jared Falk

YESS!! awesome lesson/vid. the 2nd one was pretty insane and slightly strange (i like it fer sure, just a lil cacophonous) but the 3rd is SIIIICK!! excellent application and i could hear tearing that one a new hole in the climax of a song or having that be the ending measure or sommat like that. just got in2 the 5 stroke roll a bit ago and i love seeing the many applications. thank you!

Great stuff Jared! Really diggin' the rudiments around the kit. Have you tried the more advanced "drum corps" style rudiments around the kit? Flamdrags and swiss army triplets can sound really insane on the kit as well.

yeah thats what I tend to do, or i play four on the tom and two on the bass drum, which still sounds super fast but gives you time to move to the next drum. I started with my right too, but I guess my right hands just naturally slower. keep it up!

might help to share whazhappen to me: a R-Hander set up; open style; & matched grip. L-H on HH for meter, R-H snare now free to explore toms, etc. hard to reach ride cymbal (twisted like a pretzel) my teacher after much study simply moved the ride over by the HH now I have access to toms, etc w/o loosing hh meter/accents, ride, cow bell etc. Solved problem plus new possiblities. also created greater independence of coordination.Hollar back if it helps I'd like to know

That is "extremely" helpful Jared, thank you "so" very much for getting right back to me. I can't wait to see you video on your new choice of drumstick. I am struggling with my drumstick choice also. I love ProMark drumsticks, but I can't find a pair with the proper type of tip for my preference. Any chance you could explain to me why you are unhappy with your present choice? I have 2 sets of ProMark sticks, 769 Billy "Thurder" Mason & 526 Billy Ward the Bulb Sticks.

Awesome, I love the five stroke roll myself. It is one of the rudiments that got me by for yrs on the road playing all over the place. However, these exercises are great as well. However, "Jared" what size sticks are you using??? I know they are ProMarks, but what length, what weight and what type of tip is it??? Please, this the second time I have asked. I know you are very busy, so I'm assuming that you just didn't get to my last email or comment/question. Thanks Jared. God Bless.

I have the same problem, but I've been playing for about 6 years and still can't do a comfortable simple 4 on each drum roll round the kit!! I seriously recommend learning right hand first. I now focus on creativity instead of being fast because I suck at it. Do you also have problems playing fast hi hat beats with your right hands?

Howis the visual metronome thing created? It looks very cool. Is there a standard software that would allow me to read the beats and adjust my timing in a similar way? Or maybe a mobile app? Btw, thanks for the great lesson Jared.

Perhaps. I`ve been workin on some triplet based fills lately which i also find a bit hard to fit in a 4/4 groove without um.. degrooving the groove? :D
@ThrashJazzAssassin77
@ThrashJazzAssassin77 11 лет назад
Well, if you play a larger kit, you can try a more ambidextrous setup. I like to keep a tom under my hats, and if I have extra rides or hats laying around, sometimes I'll play with hats and a ride on each side. It really improved my independence and mobility.

The 769's are too heavy and the 526's aren't thick enough for my liking. Man, I can't believe how well you do those five stroke rolls Jared. I have been playing for over 40 yrs now and I can't hold a candle to you my friend. However, I am working on improving every day, but I'm not getting any younger and I am having many problems with pain due to arthritis and fibromyalgia, to name but a few of my health concerns. Never say die though is what I say and I just can't stop drumming. I love it.

Yeah triplets are an amazing sounding polyrhythm. They can really speed up or slow down a song. The other thing you could try is playing in a triplet meter (like a 6/8 time signature) and putting duples into it, really strange sound, kind of jazzy, kind of reggae.

This is a great lesson but I'm not sure if I like exercise 2 that much, it seems a bit messy to me. The five stroke roll has 5 beats in it of course, and you're playing it here as 16th note triplets which are basically just sextuplets, but you're not accenting them like sextuplets usually are (like 6/8 with the accent on the 1 and the 4). I can't really even tell how you're trying to accent them. The hi hat hit comes once after 9 beats then again after 10 beats. Something that might be more interesting would be to accent the beginning of every 5-stroke roll. If you did this with the triplets then you'd have some great polyrhythmic and polymetric stuff going on, incorporating 5, 3, and 4 at the same time. Of course this wouldn't fit cleanly into a bar of 4/4 so you'd have to shave off the last 8th note of the pattern, but you're already doing that in the exercise anyway.

Chris Adler (lamb of god) is a right handed drummer on a right handed setup and he starts most of his fills with his left hand so i guess its just practice. i'm right handed and i practice(ed) a lot on going "reverse" on my toms ( from the bigy to the smallest) and there you have to do a cross over ( same for going from floor tom to snare for right handed drummers)

I have a problem with him saying this rudiment is underused . I use this all the time in snare parts in band. Infact I didn't know this was a standard thing until today
@Jayphillips1988
@Jayphillips1988 12 лет назад
I have the same "problem". I do everything left handed except sit at a kit, which I do like a righty. Unless of course I am doing a fill, which then goes back to left hand lead. I have decided that instead of fixing myself, I will play my style and not worry about it. Sure, I can't play all of the crazy long and fast fills through the toms like some people, but the fills I play I am willing to bet would be harder for a righty to play. Be you at the kit baby!

@Jayphillips1988 12 лет назад
I have the EXACT same "problem". I do everything left handed except play drums, which I play like a righty, unless I am doing fills, which I go back to left hand lead. I have been playing set for about 8 years now. I have decided that instead of trying to "fix" myself, I will play fills that are natural to me to play, which will be unique. Sure I can't play the 64th notes around the toms in some speed metal songs, but the fills I do come up with are probably a bit harder for others to play too.
