Arlo: What if I just never reviewed Hollow Knight or Celeste, that would be funny right? Nintendo: What if we just never released Pikmin 4, that would be funny right?
Doubtful. It's already been three years. Still a terrible experience to navigate, browse for new games, find the good games in the sale category, it's all terrible.
I wish it was possible to check the eshop on a computer or phone, because it loads painfully slowly on the switch... sitting there and waiting for the next 4 titles on the new releases or upcoming games list feels like watching paint dry, and sometimes it crashes and reloads the whole page in the process.
The Anodyne review makes me thing you'd really, really like Yume Nikki and Yume Nikki-likes. It's a dream exploration, basically. It has the element of exploration and it has that vibe you described PERFECTLY well. But it's only that: It's a walking simulator through surreal and bizzare landscapes. It's free on Steam, so give it a shot. Also, there's a Yume Nikki-like, .flow, that is also really good, but it pushes for the horror element a lot more than Yume Nikki. So I'd say if you're into horror games and that vibe, it's definitely worth checking out.
If Arlo decides to play that game and loves it I would recommend him to watch the channel of Nitro Rad, that dude has reviewed a lot of its fangames and some Yume Nikki-likes such as .flow
There’s one on the eshop too called “Yume Nikki - Dream Diary” which is an adaptation of the original. It’s basically a 3D version of it, but the original is probably better
Anodyne was such a weird experience for me in that when I started it, I was just going to try it for a bit. And as I kept playing I kept intending not to finish it. But the dreamlike worlds and even the zelda-like dungeons kept pulling me forward until I felt like I HAD to finish it. Admittedly the last level featured several long series of combat challenges which were a bit of a slog, but otherwise I just loved the game's weird atmosphere enough that I almost unintentionally ended up finishing it.
Arlo: "Let me know what other eShop games you'd like to see me review" Me: "CELES-" Arlo: "As long as it's not Hollow Knight or Celeste" Me: "GOD DAMMIT"
@@randomchannel609 Hollow knight and Celeste has a very loud and outspoken community that never misses the chance to recommend their games I say this as a hollow knight fan, we can be a little too persistent
Elliot DUDE, HOLLOW KNIGHT IS AMAZING! EVERYBODY SHOULD PLAY IT AND BE AS A BIG A FAN AS ME! I’ll admit I’m a die hard fan of Hollow Knight and fit the memo you said pretty well.
@@horseeatsdogfood5721 After i first played hollow knight it felt like i uncovered this hidden gem because i simply wasn't expecting to love it this much I thought i needed to preach the gospel of our lord and savior TeamCherry Hollow knight is basically a modern metroidvania classic and it's getting a highly anticipated sequel, everyone can chill
Some good games: Wargroove, Slay the Spire, A Hat in Time, Journey to the savage Planet, BioShock:The Collection, XCom 2 Collection, Borderlands Legendary Collection, Darkest Dungeon, Jump King, Humans fall flat and Wandersong, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Momodora-Reverie Under the Moonlight.
@Dottoman 共匪 first of all, "a little"??? second, i could really only do one per day, if i try another, i just quit. i just beat the watcher! it felt easy but when i think about it it was kinda hard. but something i hate is that rematching bosses takes forever! it should be a 2 second walk from the bench to the boss, but no. it takes like a minute every rematch and sometimes even has a bunch of enemies. not that you will even find the benches with out a guide! there so hard to find. i remember with the second horrnet fight there was a long room of nothing were you just walk forward. you cant even use the super dash (i don't know what its called) because there are platforms just tall enough to stop the dash. its like there trying to make it take long! why?? rematches should be instant. feels good to get that out!
@@user-zn8fm8kw5v at least dream bosses spawn you next to them if you fail. You probably shouldn't play the godmaster portion of the game. It's mostly boss rushes with the last one being very long and hard.
Completely heartbroken. Both excellent games. Hollow Knight specially. And this is coming from someone who almost quit it, just like Arlo did. But eventually it DOES click, and it's so good.
If i may recommend a hidden gem considering Point and Click games on Switch: Tangle Tower. Best Point and Click i played in a long time. Seriously, this could be something you REALLY like.
Really like these mini-reviews Arlo, you seem to pick games I would never have even considered (except Axiom Verge, I love that game). One suggestion for you: In Other Waters: Exploring an alien ocean world, looking for your lost partner by use of an AI whow sees the world as a chart.
O Gee!! Based on what you said about Anodyne there's a lot of rpg maker games I think you would really like. Yumme Nikki and it's popular fan games like .flow especially. They're free too! I'd really love to see your thoughts on these.
I was pleasantly shocked to see a clip of Secret of Evermore. I played that as a teen, renting it from the rental store a few times. (That probably dates me a bit.) I remember waiting in vain for it to show up on the Wii’s virtual console. I guess it’s very underrated.
Arlo, you should talk about this eShop game called "Murder By Numbers" in one of these reviews. It is like a mixture of Ace Attorney and Picross with great characters and great story. I think it's very underated, but fun!
@@MrLegendofLP Basically when you are investigating and find something, you solve a picross to see what that item actually is. It's pretty interesting how they combined both elements into a great game.
Everything you said is true except for one detail. The story is nothing impressive. There's no surprising moments and after a while you kind of want to play only the picross puzzles. The characters make up for it a bit.
These eShop mini reviewmpressions have all been great! A few I'd be interested in hearing your take on, as they've been sitting on my wishlist forever: Count Lucanor, Sparklite, Tangle Tower, Darkside Detective.
there is a free french RPG called "OFF" that scratched that same itch for me that you talk about in the last game here, it might be worth checking out, just google OFF game and there are wikis and stuff that help you play it!
Yo the new paper mario trailer just dropped. I know weve all been waiting for a new paper mario, so you may want to make a reaction vid, however, dont get your hopes up. The battle style seems to be similar to sticker star/colorsplash, albeit a bit different, but the whole "limited amount of attacks in the form of items" mechanic still seems to be there.
i know exactly what you mean about anodyne. on paper it's everything i want in a game like this, but i never finished it. that said, you should absolutely play anodyne 2 - it's one of my favorite game experiences in a very long time
If you want to see a game that handles the being inside someones mind, then you should play Psychonauts. It's a 3D platformer where you explore people's minds.
kane is adorable. put more kane in your videos every now and then. I mean if you want, I don't want to tell you how to do your job but kane is great and I would like to see more of him.
Arlo, I would love it if you reviewed Koral! Its such a simple, calming, beautiful, and unique game that also has a lot to say about how we're treating the ocean. You literally play as a wave current and solve puzzles to progress! PLEASE REVIEW IT. NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT IT!!!
Yes, Hollow Knight and Celeste is exactly what I want. I watch these mini review episodes hoping that's what you're doing this timeme. I've been hoping you'd review celeste since 2018 and Hollow Knight for over a year. They are by far the best indies on the switch. Celeste is in my top 5 games of all time! Please, Arlo. Play them.
I have just been playing Don’t Starve nonstop these last few months. It’s a roguelike (or whichever one has permadeath) where you spawn in a randomly generated world, and you gather supplies, build stuff, explore, etc. Most importantly, however, you also don’t starve.
Even though anodyne has a lot of flaws, it's sequel is an awesome time and improves basically everything! I implore anyone to pick it up once it releases on switch if you were even vaguely interested in the first game.
The "weird Earthbound-like vibe" you described has a bit of a following, the surreal RPGMaker games. There's Yume Nikki, the dream simulator, but there's also a few others that honestly I can't even describe, in particular OFF and Hylics. OFF is a very weird game, with an extremely unusual (but still interesting) worldbuilding and some damn good mysterious main characters. Hylics I litteraly just can't describe. Look up screenshots of it, it's all made of clay into surreal shapes and figures. Everyone speaks in extremely fancy and intentionally hard to understand ways. It's one of those games you have absolutely no idea what's going on, as if it was in a language you can't understand. Thankfully, you doesn't need to read much - despite that, you still have a pretty good idea where to go. But the visuals are wild; it's a kinda pretty game, and its visual direction is unlike anything else in all of gaming
When I first got Anodyne, I got obsessed with it and even went as far as to finish the amazing end game which I won't spoil. I'm usually the type to play games casually and set the difficulty low, but I never felt as intimidated by the dungeons as you have to be honest. It felt just like most top down Zeldas to me.
the room is seriously one of the most interesting series of puzzle games of recent memory and i’m so happy to hear someone talk about it. it often gets shafted for being largely mobile oriented but my god you’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t check them out.
Well I love you and you’re a great RU-vidr and you probably get this comment a lot, but you have to play Hollow Knight. It is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had and you’d be robbing yourself if you didn’t play it. Also You should play and review Katana Zero
I am so happy to see you rave about The Room, too few people know about the series, but those that do love it. Heck I even got my dad to play the VR one! He's still got a level and a half to complete though, but he's enjoyed it so far. And as for Anodyne, I kinda agree with you. I got to the hotel section and just got very confused by the layout and haven't gone back to it yet. I've seen that the sequel has a mechanic that allows you to switch between 2D and 3D on the fly, looks fun.
One thing about Axiom, if you ever played a 2D game with shooting you just might realize that with free aim bosses have to shoot infinite shoots in nearly every direction to compensate for your options. In Axiom if you want to shoot a boss you have 8 directions, typically this will go down to 3-4 which means a boss's attacks can be based around your attack options. You can make the game more difficult without turning it into a bullet hell, but also give the player safe spots to regroup where they can't hurt the boss nor be hurt... but more then 8 directions the difficult bit becomes sensory overload and no time to breathe. I think this is MUCH better design, and at the end of the day comes down to preference.
Thanks for your recommendations! Definitwly trying Earthworms now. Been on my steam-esque list of "bought in a sale, gotta get around to" for a while now.
I totally get where you're coming from with that design aspect. Like I wish I could see more indie games like Digimon World. It had fascinating pre-rendered backgrounds, with extremely charming low poly models. It was SUPER unique. Anyhow, I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on something like Regalia of men and monarchs
I love Axiom Verge. There is a little bit of the "where do i go now" after the first sweep from west to east. But the classic Metroid mood and the Giger-esque aesthetic carried me through to the end. I can't wait to see what Tom Happ has for us in the next game! But moving on to other Metroid like indie titles, Arlo may enjoy Shantae & The Pirate's Curse. That game is so much fun and so dang funny.
Thank you for reminding me of Poi. My daughter loved flying around on the moon and between the ships in the core area. She is turning 5 in 2 weeks, and I bet she will love seeing it again on the switch. The PC is in the office so we rarely play in it together anymore. (Mario Oddessy Mushroom Kingdom is still a slam dunk though for her. If anyone has other suggestions I would love it. She loves coloring, "find waldo" (we have the "find stuff in many ages" game. Forgot its name) and just jumping around having fun. Paw Patrol is running thin for her (and being an ex-game-dev (Dota+Dota2) I am actively avoiding saying my actual opinion about it at all times)
I am SO glad to hear someone gripe on inflection in voice acting. Ruined "Destiny 1" and that movie "9" relatability. Peter Dinklage and John C Reilly aren't hacks, so I blame voice direction, too. Glad to hear that complaint.
I have played and beaten "anodyne", and I agree that the game has the tone you were talking about as well as a very melancholic mood too. I think the ending is very good and the post-game is nuts in a good way. I also love the OST especially the song name "go". There is also a sequel to "anodyne" that is out on steam and is coming to switch soon-ish. Also another game on switch that no one talks about is "heart&slash" a voxel, roguelike, hack and slash game.
A game I recommend is Vitamin Connection, it's a 2D space shooter-style game where you go inside a sick person and heal them. The game has a cute artstyle, voice acting, and a bop Soundtrack. Trust me it's a hidden gem.
It's interesting to hear of your experience with Axiom Verge as, for me, it was one of the Metroidvania games I got the _least_ lost in. It just felt that there was usually something new to find around the corner which kept me engaged even when wandering around looking for new areas to access. Only once or twice did I get a bit frustrated having hard time to figure out where I had to go next. But to each their own, I guess. Hopefully the sequel improves on the areas you found less enjoyable. Cheers!
The last game you talked about, I had a similar experience with an old ps1 game called Alundra. It was basically sony's answer to 'a link to the past' and evoked similar feelings but really cranked up the surrealism and weirdness. The puzzles and the platforming really brought it down for me. The puzzles were as exciting and interesting as they were intimidating and cryptic. It was a strange experience, to say the least.
