Five Things I Love and Hate About My Acura RL 

In 2005 I saw my first new 2005 RL and my jaw dropped. I bought my 2005 in 2008 and is still going strong today.

I agree with everything you said except for the complaint about the road noise. In my opinion it's pretty quiet inside. Plus the engine sounds like no other. I enjoy listening to it ~:o)

About the gas mileage, I am getting more than 15MPG. I am getting roughly 24 MPG roughly. Lets say on the highway, I drive 6 hours straight on a full tank cruise control on. I am getting 29-32 MPG. it gives me 484 Full tank. If you use the accelerator very conservatively, I have manged city and highway 424 full tank Miles.

I completely agree about the transmission. Especially when you drive it in manual, you can really tell how much faster it could be with a better gearbox. Atleast the AWD and the engine note are really good. It really does the comfort driving well tho. As for the road noise, I have the Michelin Primacy 4 on mine and it's quieter than my dads w213 on similar tyres.

This is type of car that you can drive under the radar which to me is what luxury should not something that sgouts for attention.

The one thing that I would add is that the reliability Factor can be really really good. I've heard that people have gotten three and four hundred thousand miles out of these cars so I would put that on the positive side of The Ledger

I bought my 2005 RL for 7400 total, and dropped like 1200 total to fix minor things, and I still got the best buck for the amount of car I got.

Love the car!

I have an RLX and a 07 RL. Not much to complain about. As far as interior, the glove box is melted. Gas mileage isn't the best. I can do a 340 mile roundtrip with about $45 or about 3/4 tank. I know the parts can be expensive, but in the 4 years I've had it, no major issues. Well, I can say a front brake job will set you back about 300 and rear about 500, but that's if you did it at dealership, which is always expensive.

I have a 2006 RL. Bought it in 2017 with, 39,992 miles on it. It is the best car all around that I have ever owned. Sure it world be nice if it got a little better mileage, but if your buying a 50K+ luxury vehicle in 2006 with this much power and AWD, your not expecting 30mpg. It's also the nicest looking car I've ever owned. Went to a high end restaurant near Cinci and valet parked it, instead of taking it to the back of the lot or some side street it was parked near the front door with all the Mercedes and such when I came out to leave.

I generally get around 19 MPG in my 2005 RL, and I love this beast. I got some issues - have any of you RL owners experienced an issue where the car refuses to go from park to drive (gets stuck in neutral)?

In the UK it is considered as a grandad car, Honda and Toyota both. Toyota mainly driven by Uber drivers but I think the cars are mis understood.

My 2008 RL drives great and has been very reliable. That said, I would never buy another Acura because of it. I live in Florida and the powertrain aside, everything else is crap.. the interior was skimped on and the "leather" is cheap stuff that delaminates in the heat, the glove box rubberized exterior has slowly turned into putty-like goo.. any touch leaves a mark.. Go on ebay and you'll see this problem, all for sale have it.. I just put out $1100 to replace the bad "leather".. he couldn't do the doors or the glovebox, thankfully the doors are still marginal, not horrible.. I might try and wrap it with vinyl like the guy does (see youtube video). The electronics bug in and out including the radio, the seat memory, the display on the dash... If you want to change a front headlight you have to pull off the whole front bumper.. horrible design.. the original lights started to leak, the original bulbs caused inside the lenses.. Acura agreed to give me two for the price of one, only they don't give you cost pricing on the one so you're paying for both anyway... screw Acura.. I will never buy that junk again. I am a Lexus fan now. Our 2014 RX 450H hasn't had any issues, it seems well designed and well built all the way around.. I agree with the issues being the limited nature of the RL, but you have to consider they did make it from 1995-2012 as both the RL and Honda Legend... That's 17 years.. The 2008+ should have had all the bugs worked out by then.. Should also be plenty of parts..

We have a 2006 RL with average miles kinda high and it needs a new transmission. My husband wants to sell it and I don’t. I think it’ll be worth spending the money for a new transmission so the car can last for a couple more years what do you think

Yeah 😂 the only thing this 🚗 car missing is a V8 engine 🚂 maybe Lane keeping assistance and blind spots monitor the reason why I say this because I have the 2012 TL fwd for over 6yrs now and still running like it's brand new also love the 2011 RL super handling all wheel drive these are ahead of it time both exterior and interior design straight luxury Sudan

Great vid. I have an 08 and avg around 26 mpg. I just bought mine last year after I sold my 2020 Honda Civic Ex-L . I really enjoy it. I see others on the road every now and again.

Bought 2006 RL w/tech pkg new. Has 115k mi. as of Feb. 2023. Love the way the car drives as if it's on rails. Have to replace the engine battery every two years and that's a pain due to that way the battery is tied down (when the battery dies the car is a door stop). Don't lose the key fobs! I had to replace both at a combined cost of $1400 (in 2018) and that can only be done at an Acura dealership! Got tired of having to replace two run-flat tires every time one got a sidewall puncture ($700 each). After all the warranties expired I got rid of the run-flats and put on conventional tires.

I hate the cheap interior door panels

I have an '05 RL with 197,000 miles. I've been having problems with my Navigation screen not working properly. It comes on, goes off, goes to a black screen, displays an update message, displays a check disc message or just freezes up and not necessarily in any repeatable order. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what was the remedy?

Bridgestone? Coming from the factory, the car came with Sumitomo. And they're quieter than the American mades.

@kylepantano In answer to your MPG complaint, it's how you're driving it. The reason your gas milage is poor is the aggressive driving/acceleration style evident in your video. I get 19 MPG mixed, 24 highway without even trying. Ease up, my man!

Buy one tomorrow for 3k high mileage from highway miles but it's been to all its services since 2006. Timing belt, serpentine belt in 2014 and then in 2019 replaced water pump with OEM and an upgraded "gator" serpentine belt (huh?) As well as idler pulls and thermostat as was suggested. 206,xxx miles.

Road noise... srsly? :) You bought very bad tired then, only possible explanation, since the car is super quiet that you have to be very picky about tires ;)

Can paddle shifters make up for sluggish transmission?

Got mine with 124k miles for 5300 now at 172k. Pro tip for you RL lovers, call your local dealership and see if they have any Aspec parts. My local dealership had some, they're like $1000 for the entire kit be warned. Found aspec wheels for $300 on facebook the day after I bought the car :-) cheers yall

Hey, what are your thoughts on the Accord Euro / Acura TSX (CU2)? I kind of regret selling mine.

I average roughly 18-19mpg in mixed driving however I just got the car and I’m a heavy footer lol. So far I love it, my trans shifts impressively well, reasonably quick and very smooth for 2006 standards. I have 100k miles. Unfortunately I have to get the code from acura to unlock the headunit so I haven’t heard the sounds system yet unfortunately. Overall I love it, I do with it got better mpg though

Hey i have an 05 rl with some issues just wondering if you ever came across the same problems, my used rl never had any error lights but now when i shift from park into reverse to get out of my driveway a warning lights come on. The check transmission with the flashing D, the adaptive front light, check engine. But i drove it around the block everything drives fine transmission is smooth. I turn off the car and restart it no more warnings except the check engine light. Until i shift it to reverse, it doesnt do it all the time but 8/10 it will give thoes warning. My rl has 195km (canadian) which is about 120k miles

I'm never going to buy this car: Biggest issue to your points: OEM parts if you can find them are to dam expensive, gas mileage sucks and sluggish transmission. I own a 2007 Honda Accord EX and it is everything this Acura is not. I absolutely love my 2007 Accord. it's got 89,000 miles on it. It's in pristine condition and I live in Arizona with no rust.

I'm getting ready to buy an '06 with 169,000 miles and it does have the technology package on it.. They are asking $6999 for it and I was thinking that I should offer $5750 for it. The leather is good and the only thing I can see wrong is a little paint cracking on the rear bumper driver's corner (parking lot mishap maybe) and the sun damage to the front chrome. Does that sound like a fair deal? Or should I look at a different model?
