1. The Fistful of Metal cover is the coolest thing I have seen. 2. The pink Anthrax logo is smart. 3. State really isn't that bad - it does feel rushed but it's still a unique album with atleast 4 or 5 songs they should play live. 4. Their style was still better than how they dress now. 5. The anthrax scares gave them free publicity at a time when no one cared about them... Anthrax (specifically Scott and Charlie) have always been too worried about their image - just do you, guys 😔
I can definitely understand their point with State of Euphoria. It was a rushed album. I can totally emphasize with that feeling of shame and such for putting out a product when you know you can do better.
Best album cover, best album, best line up - Spreading the Disease and Among the Living excellent album too. Respect for not changing their name. For me never the same without Dan Spitz
Ok. Just to show you how lousy the art of 'Fistful of Metal' is..I first saw that cover when it came out and all I saw was a fist smashing INTO a guy's face (like a regular punch), not out of his head. It was only watching this video right now that I've heard what it is supposed to be. WTF....
A fistful of metal was a brilliant debut. To me they deserved their place alongside Metallica and Exodus. Neil Turbin and Anthrax made a gem here. With Amongst the living they looked like Metallica fans who were in a band but had no intentions of wanting a record deal!
After how good I thought Among the Living was, I was disappointed in State of Euphoria when it came out. I'm still surprised when I see S.O.E. tattoos, and people talking that record up. Never heard the guys admit it, but it does sound rushed to me
Anthrax was a band I could always sort of take or leave. Persistence of Time was a terrific album that I loved; Sound of White Noise was okay. But everything earlier and later just didn't really do anything for me. This means I was really surprised when I listened to Four All Kings. This band has really gotten good since Joey came back! It's almost unheard of for a band to be better 30+ years out than they were in their heyday. But I really love what Anthrax are doing now, much better than their 80's output. They might be the only band I can say that about. I'm glad that even the band themselves don't know what's going on with the Fistful of Metal cover. When I was young I couldn't even understand what the image was supposed to be depicting! It took a while before I figured out that the fist was supposed to be coming out of the mouth. I will say that State of Euphoria is a better album than people give it credit for. I totally understand the band not being satisfied, because as an artist, an album that doesn't feel right when you release it is never going to feel right. But I've recently discovered I enjoy it more than I always figured I would.
Odd choices. Most people seem to think albums 2 and 3 were the masterpieces (Spreading the Disease + Among the Living). Myself I like all of their albums except the first one.
On the new 30th Anniversary video series it was explained that it's Joey but it was suppose to be all of them and was rushed or mistaken by the artist. I forget who said it but it was Charlie or Scott I believe.
...I only watched THIS video after I replied so that's two different stories now that Charlie said it was the guy from STD...looks like Joey to me too though!
yeah but Charlie NO ONE else wore shorts or looked like you guys. That was why it was so cool. That's exactly why i LOVE that period of ANTHRAX. Look what Iron Maiden were wearing in the 80's.
SKINNY the APOCALYPSE 😂😂😂 Maiden don’t count-they can pull off anything and make it cool. Bruce Dickinson is the ONLY person who can pull off Bruce Dickinson’s style.
I liked Anthrax' skater phase. I was in 7th grade at the time, and them wearing Jammz onstage was really cool. Yeah, they were the only band doing it, and they had a sense of humor about them that was different from the other thrash bands. I love Persistence of Time, but to me they just kind of joined the ranks of all the other bands and stopped being their goofy selves
AGREED. They were fucking cool as shit because they could rip it up but they wrote songs about Stephen King and Comic Books and were into skate stuff and punk and rap and comics and were giving the finger to anyone who said "dress like this, write songs like that, fit into this mold". Then they fucking just became another shitty metal band. I tried to like them into the 90's. But the songs weren't there and the image was gone to shit. Even now, with the wearing all black and the pentagram logo and scott's dimebag wannabe facial hair it's just wannabe bullshit. but i do like the new records. and i buy all their shit. even tho they are chodes.
That's why I got into them when I was like 14 and smaller than every kid in my school. My best friend introduced me to them, and then it was just like the floodgates opened, and we were way into Thrash throughout our time in school together. I just remember hearing Among The Living for the first time, and just being blown away. It was the first Metal album I ever bought actually. But yeah I 100% agree they have that light-hearted vibe that is missing from a lot of Metal.
Mos def! I know a lot of people, including the band, rip on that particular album n their career but SOE was and is still a great album and is the first album I ever listened to from Anthrax around 89 or 90 and is what made me such a massive fan for the past 30 years or so (hard to think that it's been that damn long!). If not for that album, not sure if I'd become such a massive fan or not, so I hate when I hear them or anyone put that album down but at the same time, I know there's legitimate reasons for them to not like it as much but I've always loved it...from the opening of "Be All, End All" to the damn end of "Finale", I've always loved every track!! It was my first Anthrax album and can't imagine ever not hearing it at all, sad to even contemplate that. Lol. Love that band and there music for me through some very rough patches and events throughout my life. 🤘🤘🤘
Really it's good that they got all colorful on-stage during the State of Euphoria era. Helped give them a distinct personality away from the relative seriousness of most of the rest of the thrash scene.
I personally think the whole colorful image was their main downfall. I applaud them for going against the grain from all the other metal bands. But 30+ years later, people still think they are the lamest of the big 4 and would love to replace them. Those people are wrong. Because they kick ass, but I don't blame them for thinking it.
Why would anyone want to forget the shorts? Picture this... a cold November night in the North of England... opening band was Testament, who came out in typical black jeans and t shirts. Then this goofy bunch of lunatics came out it in outrageous Bermuda shorts, guitars covered in Ninja turtles graphics, NOT caps... and they were awesome!!! A complete breath of fresh air, and the crowd loved them. Newcastle City Hall, Friday 6th November 1987. To this day one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen.
1. Kill 'em All is an iconic album cover and its simplicity set it apart from substandard album art of the period. 2. Euphoria is the album I discovered the entire genre of metal with. 3. Charlie's chin looks like a hairy butt.
I remember the first time I heard Got The Time, I was blown away. I've been trying to introduce greatness to my teen, but so far he's not impressed. D**k. 🤣
Same here. I still got the t-shirt too. “Sound Of White Noise” is great too. That was when I first saw Anthrax. I was supposed to see them on the Iron Maiden tour but it got canceled.
I'm sorry state of euphoria was my favorite record as a kid and when my dad bought me it I played it to death and the best picture is the one where they're on the bridge all in adidas and the colorful shorts
Charlie, beat the beats, the beats you beat The only thing harder's the smell of my feet So listen up 'cause you might get dissed Go drain the lizard or take a, chair.
For the record your album shirt for "Persistence of Time" got banned in my high school back in the 1990s because of the abbreviation "P.o.T". They thought it was code for marijuana.
The best metal show I ever seen was Anthrax in Aug 20th 1996 with John Bush singing, he was a beast that night, didn't even sing half the songs. I cant explain it but Bush was pissed and swinging from the rafters and climbing on the speakers. It was epic.
One of the things that drew me to anthrax besides that I love their music was the goofy shirts and jams shorts and them actually acting like they were having fun
Steve Stremsterfer There see potential copyright issues in doing that and it’s generally difficult to put a track with vocals under an interview because the vocal tones compete. Thanks for watching!!! 🤘🤘
State of Euphoria is still my favorite Anthrax record; always has been, and likely always will be. If it was truly rushed, that doesn't come across to me in the material at all. Perhaps it was a happy accident? Maybe obsessing over details and perfectionism doesn't give the best result, or at least wouldn't have at the time? Because I think it's brilliant. It's tight as fuck with brilliant hooks, creative songwriting, great and relatively timeless topics, and it was FUN. They weren't taking themselves as seriously, and it worked in their favor. Persistence coming out immediately thereafter seems to help to highlight this point, with it seemingly being much more of a serious, darker record that they went over with a fine-toothed comb. And as much as I dig that record, too (lots), SoE is better.
5:45 WTF? I don't recall anyone ever having a problem with the clothes Anthrax wore. Yeah, they wore board shorts. It's Anthrax. What's the problem?
The thing I always found strange about the FoM cover is that there's no arm attached to the hand coming through the guy's mouth. It's basically a hand flying in the air.
If Euphoria is something you're not happy with what the hell could make you happy? Lol I do want to hear the version that wouldn't have been rushed now though.
In Charlie benante is still one of my favorite drummers of all times. Next Neil Peart Keith Moon Phil Collins and Alex Van Halen... Don't make me to do a top 10 Drummers of my life. Because my list is equal.
Headbangers Ball tour with Anthrax, Exodus and Helloween in Oakland was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. When they played Caught In A Mosh the whole arena was a giant fist fight of fun.
None of that stuff phased me. I heard the Armed and Dangerous EP and that was what made Anthrax for me. I never said, I can't listen to them because of the pink logo or how the hands were on the cover art on Fist Full of Metal. It actually was because I really dug the music. Anthrax is easily one of my favorite bands of all time and I don't really have a favorite band. You guys are great! Don't regret anything.
I always hear people say that the hands on Fistful of Metal are the same hand, and This confuses me. They're two different hands. It clearly a left hand on the back of the head, and right hand coming through the mouth.
I love the fist album cover i thought it was some abstract thing? & anthrax wanted to stand out a bit more lol..(that's the first time I've ever used lol!!) back in the day'' lol'' stood for lucifer our lord..
