Love the existential “crisis” of the why. At the risk of sounding creepy, as we’ve never met, I enjoy your channel because you do come across like one of my friends that I used to spend most of my time talking music with. I’m just listening. And of course I also do my channel when I feel like talking to my “friend”, aka the amorphous vc. Hope you keep it up, at whatever pace suits you. You are appreciated. Cheers.

Total existential crisis going on here. I also do enjoy watching videos posted by folks who I could imagine hanging out and talking music with. Like my bud, Eric Weinbender, who has also disappeared from making videos as of late. But, I've also had the pleasure of hanging out with him in person. Don't ever feel any pressure to post videos with a certain frequency or at a certain pace. Sounds like you have that part figured out. Thanks for hanging and for the thoughtful comment. Cheers ✌

Congratulations! We started making videos at the same time. The Noble Records contest was my second video. I won a t-shirt in that contest that I still wear often. I honestly can't believe that I'm still doing this but I have had so much fun. I started in an effort to meet other music lovers and most of the time, it has been rewarding. I do enjoy checking in with you here and there and your videos are always fun and worth watching. I hope you're around for a very long time. Take care.

We did start around the same time, Melinda. I’m 99% sure it was through Dillon’s channel that I discovered yours. I have enjoyed watching your channel grow. You deserve everything that you have accomplished with it. I’ve always appreciated your passion for collecting and the music itself. I check in with you more than is evident, as I always don’t comment (you have enough to respond to 😂). Here’s to five more years, as long as we’re still having fun doing it. Cheers ✌🏻

You talk about your relationship to the music. How you discovered it. You tell us stories from the past. You talk about the music, Brian, and don’t just show records. Sam had his first game yesterday and the other team didn’t show up. Lol. It was strange. His team just scrimmaged for a full game. He’s obsessed with 🏀. I love it. Hope you’re doing well, Brian. I'm glad DG did this video. Sitting at home with my lame record collection watching these videos, I always think how much more knowledgeable these guys are. I usually gravitate to the guys who I wish I could hang out with in real life. So it's gratifying to learn that they're sometimes afflicted with the same insecurities. Congratulations on five years and here's hoping you're wondering why you're still here five years from now. And really why are any of us anywhere?

Very interesting video. My first VC video was the Dylan contest too. Not long after that video, my dad passed away. I had lost the desire to make videos, but I discovered Steve Carlson, and he did a contest. So I gave it another go. Too bad for the VC. Making videos for me has changed over the years. RU-vid is a great way to find new bands, old bands that passed you by, get to know people afflicted with this hobby and gives me a creative outlet. I really don’t take myself all that seriously. And no one else should either. If anything… it’s me showing how I’m learning about bands that I’ve listened to for years, but didn’t know the story behind them or a song. But mainly it’s just a way to goof off in public. I always enjoy your take on the hobby. Weather it’s about collecting, downsizing or the people that you’ve met since doing this. I definitely would like to see you continue making content (yeah I said it) due to your unique take on things. You have a great sense of humor and seem like a good person. You remind me that I should do a bit better about connecting with more people in the VC. But that’s been tough for me in general, and I’d like to avoid the weirdos. You however, are one of the normal folks here. And for that- thank you.

I will always remember your entry into my only contest. It was incredible. We had a lot of good fun with editing back then, didn’t we? I think what you and Bryce continue to do is fantastic. You both bring your shared experiences to those connections and you both make it all about the music. It’s always best to avoid the weirdos, man. I think once one has been doing this long enough, we kind of find our crew and then just settle in. It’s very rare for me to connect with any new channels anymore. Thanks for thoughtful comment, Brother Eric. Hope all is well out your way. Cheers ✌🏻

Those records and cds look way better featuring in a video🤩yeah i did stalk you a bit on the temptations album🤫 now the stuff I'm here for - 5 years in the VC purchases you a good chunk of screentime on laying down what the VC means and is on YT. 'Pure music fandom' - i really can't think of many (any) people who do it better than you? It's ultimately what keeps everyone coming back (that, and the clean design and editing. Oh and the humour😂). Love how you give examples of entertainers and educators in the VC; great way to look at things! I love you addressing the content conundrum of YT. Beautifully said👌 i'm so glad you're still doing this and i hope you continue. 5 years and only ever getting better. Salut!

This Vinyl Community ordeal has distracted me a little from new music. At least as much as I used to focus on it. Used finds and crazy amounts of reissues have gotten in the way. I got back into the swing of new releases a little more this year. Will talk about that in a future video. You’ve entered this whole thing in a pretty fresh way with a different perspective. Good food for thought, which I will respond to in time on video. It's worth noting what we do with our time, especially with full lives as I'm sure you can relate. I weirdly started doing VC vids cause I thought it would help me appreciate what I have, and buy less. Stupidly wrong. But the number 1 reason I still do them and will continue, is to make human connections. Serious there. And to mirror and backup Alex's collection in case something happens to his. A stewardship of sorts.

I subscribed to your "not-content" sometime earlier this year. I like your manner and tone. If you still feel like making videos, I'll keep watching them. I recently did a purge of all of the pandemic VC channels as I just had too many to consume and decided to whittle them down to a manageable consumption level; yours is one I've kept. It seems I've also kept the channels of several of the people that have commented on this video. I will say that if more than one of you speak kindly of an album, it does have an effect of making me listen 'harder' when sampling it but as you communicated; I'm always asking: "Is it for me?". Lastly, I'm a big fan of Sam's Douchesodes and sense of humor...and am shocked he is still under 1000 subscribers, but as you also stated, "I don't think he cares"...which is part of his charm. So I leave you with the words from his own comment: "the traditional five-year anniversary gift is wood. I hope someone sent you a log - or at least left one in your yard" 😆Maybe you should plan a road trip to Arizona, stop in for a beer and meat stick, leave a log in his porta potty while listening to some dream pop / shoegaze you've never heard of :) Cheers and congrats on 5 years!

You bring up something really important here. I have definitely bought records because 4 or 5 or more people talk about them in videos. However, I really try to stream something before I go out and purchase it. “Is it for me?” is THE most important question that everyone should be asking themselves. Sam is the best. His comment is further proof of that. Thanks for hanging and the kind words. Cheers! ✌🏻

That’s interesting that you say you feel some people take their collections too seriously. That would be my only slight peeve with the VC. It sometimes feels that people forget why they fell in love with music in the first & now it’s became an academic exercise only to be discussed in hushed tones.The moment in my record buying life that I realised that the second & third KC & The Sunshine band albums are as good as anything by James Brown.. well it was a road to Damascus moment! Hi Jon. I enjoy your videos. Congratulations on keeping at it for five years. I had a try many years ago and decided it was a lot of effort and I wasn't enjoying it. I suppose I get to discuss music with the independent record store owners I keep in business, so I have someone to talk to. Thanks for mentioning Dean - I miss his videos. I agree that Sam has way too few subscribers. Everyone could use a vinyl douche now and then. Another channel that is woefully undersubscribed is drrythm - they have a new video just out. Those guys always talk about the music and they have a lot of knowledge to share. If Digital Gramophone makes no sense, perhaps you have mastered the art recommended by David Byrne when he advised us to 'Stop Making Sense!'

This does take effort. Especially the way I do it. I do continue to enjoy it when I can find time for it, though. Mark and John are fantastic. Tremendous knowledge indeed. I don’t watch every video of theirs, but I always check in. I’ve listened to their radio show a couple of times. I actually had watched their latest video a few days ago. Thanks for hanging out with me here. Cheers! ✌🏻

Jon, but what are we all just doing here? Yea man, receiving the album Cloud Nine put you on cloud nine. I also need that funky shack album EW showed, or whatever it’s called. Killer Hawkwind! Another EW reference, he beat me out getting that Hawkwind from Chris has the Spins- he was selling some records quite a few years ago. When he still had a channel. WAIT right there, pal! You are an expert, in what you buy and what you like. Keep it positive. You are very serious. Seriously. I am also seriously serious, about what I have absolutely no idea. Lol the music has brought us together but ultimately it’s about the people and the connection. Much ado about nothing. Excellent content! Bravo. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman

While I started making videos because my brother talked me into it, there is part of me that has come to look at it as a creative outlet, and I'm a creative guy. I think it would be fun to learn to learn to make good videos, but I struggle so much in just keeping up with a one-video-per-week schedule that it doesn't feel like there's time to continue to expand my skill set beyond what I've already learned to make the workflow efficient. I have no intentions to monetize and start a media empire, so, like you, I'm using RU-vid wrong. On one hand, I'm happy I don't feel any pressure to chase trends to stay on the algorithm's good side; on the other hand, I wish the algorithm liked what I was doing, because I do wish more people watched the videos. I try not to wrap my self-worth in YT statistics (which is good, because by nobody's definition have I been "successful" on this platform), but it's also hard to justify the time and effort I put into it for 15 views. But then, I also don't engage with the VC proper, and I'm not really willing to network, so I suppose I reap what I sow. In short: I too have complicated and conflicting feelings about being on RU-vid. I can say that I probably still wouldn't know about Kiwi Jr. if not for you, and I like both of the albums I've subsequently purchased, so there's some tangible results for you. Still, congrats on sticking it out for five years. Here's to a couple more before fizzling out and walking away from it in order to focus on our shuffleboard skills.

Hey Bryce. First, let me say that I love what you and Eric do. My brother and I only text each other about sports. Next, your videos have always looked great. From the thumbnails, to the camera you use, and the band math (when you still did it). You’ve got it right. Engagement is everything. 90% of the people that comment on my channel make videos too. I don’t really have much of a reach beyond that. We’re all just patting each other on the back in “THE Vinyl Community.” Last, I’m sorry I haven’t been watching as much as of late. I’ve cut back on my viewing tremendously. I honestly found that it got in the way of me actually listening to music. I still check in with you guys and I’ll make more of an effort to comment as well. The most important thing is to have fun with it and, yes, use it as an outlet. I think talking and writing about music actually makes our connection to it stronger. Cheers ✌🏻

Hey Jon. We must have had our first uploads within a couple days of each other - like two strangers passing in the night. I had a five year video prepped for earlier this week and then scrapped it. I might include some clips in my next video. Very few of the channels that inspired me to upload my first video exist anymore. I am also a big time “um” guy - might start editing all of those out. My videos would be Shorts then. Congrats on making it - I hope you have cake with candles. I was waiting for The Osmonds to come out - I guess they got bumped the diarrhea. I appreciate the kind words and hope you keep fighting the good fight for another five. Cheers! (The traditional five-year anniversary gift is wood. I hope someone sent you a log - or at least left one in your yard)

That’s hilarious. I figured you had been posting for at least a year before me. I know you have been watching videos longer than me. You should still post something in acknowledgment of this magnificent feat. A list is always nice. Top Five Beers shown by The Douche. Top Five Tweemocore albums shown by The Douche. The Osmonds definitely got bumped by the diarrhea. Not the first time and won’t be the last. I need some diapers for my mouth. Maybe you know a good brand. Next up… more year-end content that isn’t content. Looking forward to what you have in store for us as well. Cheers ✌🏻

Despite your denial, you are a content creator. But you also have become a great friend who shares music and stories in such a wonderful low key way. And I love our backstage banter and cannot wait to meet you next year. I know I will probably be disappointed though 🙂 Jon, you are one of my favorites in these parts, and your subtle or not-so-subtle humor is contagious and your top 200 list was much better than CATS on Broadway. Six years on for me, but I promise I won't create a video response based on #6inch's comment. The people I've met through these years make it all worthwhile. And this so-called VC gives me the opportunity to share my collection with more than just those who stop by for a real visit. Best to you my friend!!!

Chao.

No no no! Why'd you go and do this? Now I'm having a self-centred mini personality crisis. I must not think about why I (sporadically) make videos! That way madness lies. I don't need more of an excuse for navel gazing. Damn and blast you! I don't think I know what content is. What does content contain or not contain? Why are you not content with being content?
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 10 месяцев назад
I’m just keeping you honest, Hedley! So a content creator is somebody who does a series of videos where they talk about something very specific. Maybe a specific genre of music. Maybe something like, I don’t know, country rock? The content creator has usually done their research, and can usually record videos that people would seek out for recommendations on said subject, i.e. country rock. The content creator usually is widely associated with the subject they normally talk about. For example - country rock. 😂🤣
@TheDigitalGramophone
@TheDigitalGramophone 10 месяцев назад
Also… to clarify… I never said I wasn’t content to be content. Though, that’s a nice play on words. I just said I don’t consider myself to be a content creator. I don’t consider myself a source for knowledge or consumption.
