Keeping a 30 year old car street legal and daily-drivable is a challenge whether the car is modified or not. The materials this Elantra is made from break down into completely different things with different structural properties over time. I don't want something stupid like that decay taking my car off the road, and it easily could in my state if I can't pass inspection. I'm doing my best to keep this thing preserved because they're not making any more of them, and I don't plan to ever build another one like it.
I perform several repairs, address several safety concerns with another upgrade, do some maintenance on the tool I use to tune it with, complete my alignment and corner balancing now that the transmission mount bolts have finally been fixed, and then I test my work with an unbiased State Inspector. The Elantra's steering and front suspension have never felt this perfect, ever. My driving is a completely different story, though.
Re: what I broke: Power steering squeal is right back again already, and so is the oil sensor leak. Both permanent (I hope) fixes on the way, and that's just scratching the surface for what's in store.
If my video should draw the ire of this facility for simply documenting the night I had, don't shoot the messenger. This is what was advertised, and what every single ticket holder expected.
racevmp.com/event/ebaymotors-...
If I could add anything that isn't in the video, I had a wonderful time testing my work no matter what you see play out in the video. If everything was easy, then nothing would ever be worthwhile. You win some, you lose some. Not all of my testing required this event, but it really helped. All the people there deserve praise for their part in making it all happen. To me, racing is just like fishing, and I at least got to go and do the thing even if it got away, and I'm still thankful that I can. It would have been nice to get more testing in before the shootout, but that was my only opportunity on a track.

Three quick notes on LED light replacements. First, get LED bulbs that match the color of the lens they will go behind. Lenses filter out all colors except the color of the lens. For example, red light behind red lens, you get the brightest, cleanest, correct color light. Learned that from Stephen, Cars Simplified, a friend of mine. Second, you can also correct hyper flashing by getting a modern LED flasher module. It controls the flasher timing regardless of resistance, so you don't need to add resistors. They are pretty cheap and less effort generally. Third, I like the response time of LED lights, specifically for brakes. LED illuminates faster and of course brighter. Sure, not much, but an extra 0.1s for max brightness and brighter might still save you from getting rear ended. Made a huge difference for illumination lag in my 93 Impreza. LED reverse lights are also a huge improvement! I can actually see behind me at night. I have yet to actually try LED headlights, because the cost for minimum decent product is a hard point to find. Anyways, there's my LED rambling for you.

Maybe since you’re deleting the hydraulic power steering, you can move the alternator back to its factory spot and add the AC compressor back? Not having hydro power steering anymore but adding AC “could” balance out the parasitic power loss perhaps? She’s gonna fly once you have the tune adjusted some. The takeoff was much more controlled this time around. Can’t wait for the next update!!

@Jafromobile Год назад
You observed what I did! Usually it crab walks, pulls to one side when it spins, and I've reduced that exponentially now. You can see me fight the wheel a little, but it still pulls straight. That's new. AC would be nice, but I doubt I'll ever add it back. AC will be on everything else except the Colt, and the Colt wasn't ever supposed to be my street car. If I ever transplant it into something else that has AC, I'll keep it, but this AC system isn't one I want to re-engineer.

5:38 "Most people can't perceive it (LED flicker), but I do." If you haven't already, look up "IEEE 1789-2015". Turns out it's pretty common to be affected by light flicker, but most folks aren't aware of it. You can buy LEDs that meet the new 1789 standard, albeit at a premium. Switching to a different color balance or mix can also help.

Your headlight brightness lesson is totally correct, our 2021 4Runner has LEDs that are stupid bright, people think they are the high-beams. but I never have problems seeing like I do with my wrx.
@Broadpaw_Fox
@Broadpaw_Fox Год назад
If "everyone" thinks they're high beams, then you need to check the pattern to make sure it has the correct cutoff, and you need to aim them correctly. Driving around bitching about people flashing you and/or flashing them back and saying "THERY'RE NOT BRIGHTS!!" isn't going to make it better, and becomes part of the problem. Properly aimed low beams don't blind other drivers, and that means you don't get flashed. So consequently, if you're getting flashed "because they think they're high beams", then you have issues. And do be aware, most of the LED headlight "upgrade" bulbs don't actually have that great of a pattern - if you put them in housings like Jafro's here they can have terrible patterns and not effective enough cutoff - this leads to people flashing you "because they think they're brights".
@kcspeed9980
@kcspeed9980 Год назад
@@Broadpaw_Fox it’s factory equipment, we asked the Toyota dealership about it and they said it’s in spec, the next step is to adjust it myself and The pattern it leaves on my “garage door test” that I would do on my older cars doesn’t seem to be that high. I don’t really was to start changing it because as far as the driver is concerned it’s great! The 2020 and older 4Runner’s with their halogen headlights are pathetic for a new car. I really think people are still adjusting to modern car headlights, most people who flash me as I’m driving towards them are in lower “cars not SUV’s” and people in older cars with poor lighting. And it’s not that often that people flash their headlights at me, i was referring to people who drive the car. My brother, parents, friends all get in the car at night and wind up driving around thinking the headlights are the brights and just use the day time running lights. But thanks for the help, retro-fit led bulbs suck for quality, for my 2020 wrx I’m looking to upgrade with 2017 sti led housings because it’s just a better quality lighting package. It sucks that the led lights for 2020s are not compatible with non led cars from the same year.

A note for the turn signals. You put some annotation in the video to add resistors, but instead try finding an led compatible turn signal relay if your car utilizes a relay. If it’s a newer car and uses a BCM to control the lights, certain models can have the computers adjusted to utilize the LEDs without having to mess with splicing any resistors into the wiring. Forscan for certain models of Fords is an example of such.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
I could have spent $15 on a new relay or install a pair of 3¢ resistors ... but ultimately I spent $0 because I'm doing flashers and corner markers on a single-filament bulb with some creative wiring, and you might notice there's 3 levels of brightness. On, dim, and off. 1 filament. I don't think I can get an LED to do that no matter what resistors I use on a setup that's this analog. Nice tip about the BCM! I'm sure I'll be tearing into my F-150 eventually. Forscan... LOL!
@Genesis385
@Genesis385 Год назад
@@Jafromobile I left this comment as more of a general FYI for anybody that found any interest in the topic mostly, but you being the tinkerer and madman you are I trust you’ll do what you deem necessary. Plus you might be liable to have the smaller inline style resistors whereas most people when considering using resistors for turn signals are going to run to the parts stores and grab this chunky, gaudy, anodized gold looking ones off the shelf costing them far more than ¢3 per corner of the car whereas a simple relay swap could save them money, time, and introducing a new potential entry point to their wiring harness for moisture. Have fun with the F150 if you ever try the Forscan out 😆 like I said, I’m not sure what year models it works on so as I’m sure you know it might require some research beforehand to verify. Hopefully next time you go to TnT you can make more than one pass and maybe even line up with the right grooves in the track surface 🤞🏼

Gas nowadays is already 15 percent ethanol and the epa wants it 20. If he is knocking it could be poor fuel flow. A dirty injector, partially clogged fuel filter, voltage drop to fuel pump. Hell it even could be fuel slosh. If the fuel system is functioning properly then it's spark. Never count out oil consumption. A poor pcv system can introduce oil into the combustion chamber and since oil is not compressible it increases the compression ratio therefore requires higher octane to prevent detonation. I know you know but you didn't mention the fact he is running meth and that is a great substitute for race gas. He definitely has a fuel issue is my gut reaction.

It doesn't do it when I free rev, so that under load condition makes me think the fuel pump is causing all of it. Relative has f150 ecoboost while back he need alignment done, dealership is only shop to do it, he was charged 2500-3,000 for new electric steering rack plus alignment. Lol Does your car have an Qualfy lsd in front. If not that might be why you ain't getting traction also, lower your tire pressure abit.

@ChristmasCrustacean1
@ChristmasCrustacean1 Год назад
man jafro... why you gotta make me want to buy a LED headlight kit. my headlights still work fine because I bought philips bulbs over a decade ago for a different car and they're still bright examples of the best halogen can offer.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Keep rockin' 'em if you can see! Between glare from oncoming traffic, resistance, and viewing angle, I found my headlight bulbs could no longer compete. If there was traffic in oncoming lanes, my headlights didn't appear to be lighting anything at all from where I was sitting. Those Phillips bulbs were spectacular back in the day.

On ECM Link how do you get AFR EST to match the wideband? Also my WB isn't reading right on ECMlink
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Your first order of business is to correct the voltage offset for whatever kind of of Wideband sensor you're using. That will help the WB gauge and ECMlink match. After that's correct, make sure your global fuel and dead time are correct for your injectors. Only then should you change the VE table. You can adjust the VE cells in the Speed Density tab that represent wherever you are sampling from (the "track" function I showed in the video) to add and remove efficiency (air) wherever you find those AFR values rich or lean. Adding air adds fuel wherever that cell may be because the fuel is calculated based on your global, dead time and air pressure. So adding or removing air via. percentages of volumetric efficiency results in adding or removing fuel. Don't go tuning anything until you get your Wideband to match. I think it's on the tab with all of your inputs. I'm using a known Wideband kit with values for it scraped from the ECMlink forums.

I don't know why Ladies' Night always brought 10,000 rowdy men who break every track rule, brought every race car in town, and less than a dozen women out? lol... That video was tough, but it was a friendly joke! I was always happy to see them, and they were always happy to see me.

What about electric hydraulic pump for the power steering
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
Because I've concluded it's just like riding an escalator on horseback, or setting sail on horseback. I looked at a few universal hydraulic power steering kits, but there's modern electric solutions that do the same thing and are arguably even better because they're incapable of leaking hydraulic fluid. I may do an electric hydraulic pump on my Galant though, because it's All-Wheel Steering is hydraulic, and I plan to repair and rebuild all of that somehow.

@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile Год назад
It will be this fall... The headlights vs short winter days have previously been a real bummer, but they're not anymore. Once it holds all of its oil and has no belt squeal, I'll drive it every day. All of the parts for those permanent repairs are already here. It's extremely streetable, and actually actually rather mousey with the cutout closed despite its cams. It's still cheaper on gas than my F-150 IF I can keep my foot out of it. If I don't, it's about the same. It's every bit as awesome to drive as my truck, but in a completely different and alien way.

I’m surprised you just installed LED headlight bulbs and didn’t care about other drivers and just essentially have your high beams on all the time. Your work is usually really well done. I figured you’d do a retrofit with a LED projector and do it properly. Your headlights with the LED should have failed the state inspection due to terribly blinding other drivers intentionally.
