I am running a late 2012 Imac. Never opened the machine to replace the harddrive. I did the same you did : got me a 50 dollar ssd, installed macos on it, and now i am using the internal 1tb drive as my data drive. Runs like this for years and still holds up in 2022!

I have opened up the iMac and replaced the HD to a 1tb SSD and upped the RAM from 2x4gb to 2x8gb. It’s probably faster than it’s ever been and boot up is now only 34 seconds. I bought the SSD from crucial for €115 and the RAM upgrade kit from OWC for $100. It’s a great kit that comes with various tools and new seals for the screen. I got a friend to help me which is advisable. Thanks for making these videos and also for replying to my questions.

Wow! Unbelievable! My 2013 iMac is running as fast as my 2019 iMac! I spent hours trying to work out from Apple and their "assistants' only to go around in circles with complicated procedures to download OS and boot from the SSD. If I tried to install OS from the app store it would just say my computer is up to date. I was about to give up when I came across your video. OMG, what a breath of fresh air! So simple. Thank you so much. The only hitch I had was my lack of knowledge. When I went to clone a prompt poped up saying that the format on the SSD is ExFAT and do I still want to proceed'? The CCC also has a banner advising to do it, and explaining that the APFS would operate 2.5 times faster than ExFAT. I reformatted the SSD to APFS ( by choosing erase in the disc utility and selecting AFPS, the utility erases the ExFAT and automatically installs the Mac APFS.)

So I'll order a 256GB SSD and get that sorted as a bootable drive and they can use the internal 1TB HDD as their storage etc. Thanks for the simple, straightforward instructions 👍🏼

This is by far the best way to speed up Imac and easiest. FYI: I tried install directly on SSD but IMAC couldn't see SSD after rebooting. Instead I did a fresh install on existing hard drive inside Imac. Cloned it to SSD then reboot. Imac sees the SSD and I successfully boot from it. Now the system is amazingly fast on Catalina. Thank you !!!!

Hello there! Excellent video very well explained! I have one question, is there a difference speed/performance wise between using an external portable SSD (which you show in this video and which I intend to do) and replacing the HDD with an internal SSD (i.e. opening the computer which I would like to avoid for a number of reasons)? I don't mind that the external SSD would be visible etc . I only worry about speed and overall performance. Thanks!
@Andytizer
@Andytizer 2 года назад
I would say it's more a time investment to do the internal SSD replacement, it takes longer to take off the screen and re-attach. You'll technically get faster speeds but most casual users will not notice this. Take a look at this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vzhjGV-ULMk.html

SSD as an external drive would run faster and more reliable than a traditional hard drive, however at a relativey high cost. That being said, SSDs are much cheaper these days than they used to be.

Thanks for the great video. I am considering this as my existing hard drive is failing. It has nearly 500gb of data on it and the existing hard drive, like yours is 1TB. Do you advise purchasing a 1TB sdd drive for the new external drive? Thanks
@Andytizer

Yes SSDs need at least 10% free space to work efficiently so if you have 500GB of data a 500GB SSD isn’t enough, 1TB is the way to go.

You can even use this with USB 2.0. I've always used this trick with my old iMac to avoid opening it, and now, with my 2014 mac mini. You get faster boot times (it goes without saying it's better with 3.0 (or thunderbolt if you can afford it)) and faster apps launching. I use Super Dupper to clone the external SSD to the internal HD once a week to have a backup of the system, but you can also use the internal HD for any other thing. A 2014 mac mini is useless due to the super slow HD, but once you boot from an external SSD it's pretty fast. By the way, not every enclosure is the same in terms of speed, sometimes a few bucks make a big difference.

Hi again Andrew. I've succesfully copied these steps and all gone well. I did do one thing different however - I called my target SSD drive 'Samsung SSD' (I was being over-cautious as I didn't want to select the wrong disc during cloning) and have named this to 'Macintosh HD' after the clone process was completed. Althought he SSD now shows as 'Macintosh HD' in disk utility and on the desktop, when I boot holding option key, the disk still shows as 'Samsung SSD'. I'm running my first Time Machine backup now from the new SSD, seems to have accepted the name OK (it's doing a full backup). I've also removed carbon copy from the old HD and the SSD, as it kept giving scary messages about wanting to re-clone.

@Andytizer 3 года назад
Yes the Mac will still sleep just fine, you don’t need to remove it or manually turn it off. Do you have the UASP version of the enclosure
@gilbertominero7717
@gilbertominero7717 3 года назад
@@Andytizer yes, model EC-UASP version, this great news...will set this up today...that was my only concern...if by keeping enclosure on at all times would it damage or have a negative effect on the drive

I ordered the items you recommended on here but now I am wondering about size. I have a late 2015 imac that is terribly slow. Is the 240 enough for the operating system and apps? Or do the apps go on the internal hard drive? Sorry I just don't know much about this. Just wanted to see if I should go up to the 480 before I open the package? Thanks!
@Andytizer
@Andytizer 2 года назад
Size depends on personal usage. You can see on your About This Mac how much you are currently using, and you should double that number for your new drive.

It’s miraculous how fast everything gets with this set up. I did this for my iMac of late 2015. Do I need to worry about longevity of the external SSD as a boot drive?
@Andytizer
@Andytizer 3 года назад
More likely for something else in the iMac 2015 to fail first before the SSD! I have eventually upgraded the internal SSD so that I can sell this particular iMac.

late to the convo here but since the new external drive is now your ONLY hard drive I would take an extra step to purchase another SSD or even spinning disk hard drive to use to back the external SSD up - if it should die for any reason, probably won't, you'll have a backup for safety as long as you remember to regularly backup your computer!!!!

Maybee it is me. How are you getting the new speed when the mac is that old? It is not with usb 3.0 or higher. Got the case(Sabrent 2.5 Inch) and planing to get Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SSD - 1TB to my Mac late 2013. Wil this work? Better speed? better boot performence?

If you switching from HDD to SSD? And then yes, SSD read/write speed is much faster than traditional spinning drives.

Hello, my friend! Thanks for the video - I bought all the things and did everything according to your steps. I even decrypted the SSD... but the new SSD is still not showing up in my options to switch to on the Startup Disk or when I boot into the computer holding the option key, only the original Mac HD. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks!!!

Have a late 2013 21" iMac that is at walking pace at times!!! Got quoted $437 yesterday to upgrade to a 1tb SSD. THis looks like a good option that I think I could master.........was wondering about time machine? Any other advice is greatly appreciated before I try this!!

@Andytizer 3 года назад
What about Time Machine- even if you boot from external SSD you can still make use of another USB Time Machine drive too. Hope that helps! Also consider installing the SSD internally, it's not that hard, I have several videos on my channel showing how to do this too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vzhjGV-ULMk.html

Jan 22,2021 I followed the entire process , Big Sur version not allowed to clon some volumes from the original hard drive , even if you use carbon copy cloner same thing . Showed a warning long notice describing several issues. SSD clon hard drive boot my iMac fast but l don not exactly what is the meaning of that big warning , as a regular person not technician l got confused. For this reason I did not erase the original hard drive . Any suggestion?
