FIX for Scaletrains SDL39 Short Circuit

Hello model railroad friends in this video we are fixing an short circuit issue on the newly released Museum Quality Scaletrains EMD SDL39! I give you two options both fairly simple and not "too invasive." I hope I don't have to make many more of these videos! I quick made this video to help out the Scaletrains Community and SAVE MY SDL39!!!

It' a perfect time for them to slow down, introspect, and win back customers' confidence. I am sure they will.

Oh, give you a model that might not be accurate for the railroad you're modeling. Compare Scaletrains Dash 9's to Kato's and you see want I mean.

WOW kind of surprise about this "problem"! Electrical tape is a good, cheap and easy fix thanks for sharing this. Great video. Very well done.

hey Andy, glad you're able to troubleshoot and fix the issue. However, as some others have noted, a $300 loco and, out of the box you've had to (1) fix sloping pilots and (2) fix a short. Shame on ScaleTrains, someone should have road tested these locos before releasing. Has anyone notified ScaleTrains? Unless they meant Museum Quality was to just sit on a shelf and not be run or used. Terry

I've contacted Scaletrains both by email and by phone, no answer. A little disappointed that they have been relatively quiet on this issue. If I can come out and talk about quick fixes you'd think that the manufacturer (Scaletrains) could have said something.

There are way too many shelf collectors out there, it seems most of the manufacturers seem to cater to them first. So maybe indeed 'museum quality' means 'sit in the box in a drawer til the estate sale'.

Instead of electrical tape, try liquid tape, the brush-on rubber alternative. It can always be scraped off later.

Nice tip, however in the close up of the frog, there are chips and chunks missing, what did you do to the frog??

easy fix! but it is now the 2nd issue, It has lost its museum quality tag in my book....and I was going to buy another one, I'll wait to get my first one from my LHS and see first...bummer

I am having issues with the front number boards being significantly dimmer than the back number boards and the cab light refusing to come on? Anyone else having these issues?

Sparks happen depending on the type of switch/power setup used. I have 2 MQ Big Blows and at the club, a single switch does this. The rest do not.

As much as I like scale trains. If the model railroad community continues to accept and fix issues like this, the quality of there product will get worse.

Scale Trains should be totally embarrassed. Locos cost in excess of $300. What production designer would approve something like this. Complete failure.

You're crying over $300 for a locomotive that has all these features. I guess you never bought brass and probably didn't come close to all these features. I know the brass one was at least double of that.

There is another quick fix.A lot cheaper too.Dont buy one.I don't get it? No other brand use this stupid design.So why reinvent something that does not work.Have also had their kit boxcars,and found the axle box in the side frame is too shallow.Scaletrains is not on my menu.

This model is not offered by any other manufacturer. I guess you never owned an Athearn Blue Box , MDC Roundhouse, or Walthers kits.

@@jeremyvehring9259 Yes I have indeed,and all were good and work.Have not seen anyone else use such a shallow axle box combined with short axles.I had to swap out bogies for another brand,as the wheelsets would fall out.They have the benefit if years of technology that works,and yet reinvent it,so it does not work.Sorry,but there is no excuse.No one else uses metal brackets hanging under the trucks,and for a good reason.
