How to fix a loud tapping / clicking / ticking noise / sound in a 2005 - 2013 Impala dash / dashboard. The issue is a faulty blend door actuator. In this video I show all 3 locations, how to replace it, and I open one up to show how it works. I also show a workaround to fix it without purchasing a replacement actuator. 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013
ACDelco GM Original Equipment Actuator:
amzn.to/35A4vgj
"Amazon's Choice" Actuator (Lower cost, good reviews, but not GM part):
[There are MANY aftermarket brands. This is just one example]
amzn.to/3s36yRl
If needed, this is the distribution actuator (floor, face, defrost) pointed out at 1:10 in the video, but not covered. The dash has to be disassembled to some degree to access it.

If you're unfortunate enough to have your driver's side temp control actuator go bad, I recommend finding a small child to reach in and disconnect the wire harness to stop the clicking and then promptly trade in or sell the vehicle to someone you don't like. Should you decide to go through with the repair, prepare to have your left arm look like an 18th century French-Canadian fur trapper that stumbled upon a den of sleeping wolverines. Pro Tip: When installing the new actuator 90 minutes after starting the project, be sure to reconnect the wire harness first, as the connector can actually become captured behind the newly installed actuator and cause your moment of triumph to become one of despair as you realize you're back at the point you were two hours ago: needing to remove the mounting screws. I also recommend taking a moment to smash the old actuator with a hammer as you imagine it's the face of whoever decided to use plastic gears instead of metal on this part. It will help release your rage and prepare you for installation of the new part.

LOL! This is dead on... My left hand all the way to the elbow is torn up... Death by 1000 cuts 😅. And that connector did get trapped behind the actuator but lucking I hadn't put on the screws yet!
@MrBikedrummer
@MrBikedrummer Год назад
Garbage design with those plastic gears. Many auto manufacturers use these and they are guaranteed to fail. I know the GMs are programmed to actuate these blend door modules every time you open and close the door to regulate air pressure in the cabin. That's to reduce the risk of damaging your ears when a door is slammed shut. That's a lot of wear on the 5 cent crap gears.

You saved me $532.00. That's how much the dealer wanted to replace the easiest one. I paid $225.00 to have them "diagnose" the problem. The service advisor knew what it was but took my money anyway. Fortunately I found this video before I got the call letting me know what the problem was. The 2014 Impala Limited is even easier, as the passenger side blend door activator is held in place with only 2 screws, Both easily accessible without the glovebox in place. Thanks again!

Thank you, thank you. Having had the driver and left hand passenger side actuator replaced by a mechanic .... lots of hundreds of dollars a few years ago, it was depressing to hear the noise again. Your tutorial was very helpful as the sound started when I purposely changed from outside air to recirculated air. Your mention of the right hand passenger side actuator led me to the cause of the sound. I pushed the outside air button and let it click for several minutes until the shutter got back to the proper position and then unplugged the right hand actuator. Time to trade in the car, lots of other things failing. Anyway, thanks for the thorough tutorial and hints about disconnecting it.

Just finished the install of the driver's side actuator and the inner passenger side actuator. Driver's side sucked to do! I'm thankful for this video! Tips for anyone needing to replace the driver's side.... 1. Also remove the plastic trim plate above the gas and brake petals. It makes this WAY easier. 2. Get a LONG 1/4" rachet extension and universal joint. 12"-14" in length with a 5.5mm socket. I couldn't imagine doing it any differently. 3. A forked ended trim removal tool was really handy for taking loose a couple wire harness holders to gain better access. 3. Have jumper wires handy to help align new actuator hole with the old one. I also had luck by hooking up the power before installing screws and turning the heat and down while holding new part over the existing actuator. It eventually fell into place. 5. Don't get the cheapest part, as you do NOT want to have to do this again. I used Dorman brand $20 on Amazon or Rock Auto. Final thoughts: If i was better prepared with the right tools, it would have been much easier. It really sucked with the tools I had. Glad it's done. If it acts up again, I'm selling the damn thing. 😂

Absolutely Superb!!!!! Very detailed and complete. The only thing I would add is how do you figure out which one is Tapping. Well, lower the glove box and start car. Mine starts tapping immediately. Simply put your fingers on the 2 actuators and you can feel or see which one is the trouble maker. If neither on the right are the offender, you know it is the one under steering column.

@@philtripi9937 Unfortunately not. The best option is to use am OEM replacement (not a cheap aftermarket replacement), but even those are known to potentially fail in short order. After watching this and reading these comments I’m laughing but also relived I can do this on my own. This is such an annoying and embarrassing problem, been dealing with it for a month assuming I was bringing it to the shop at some point.

It is definitely annoying! Hopefully it’s one of the passenger side actuators. Those are the easiest to access.

I replaced two actuators from the passenger side thanks to this video. So, thanks for making it 👍🏽. It was a hard job, but nothing compared to changing the actuator on the driver's side. I simply cannot reach it 😢.

Trying to shut down the racket! The two actuators on the glove box side has the left one defective as I can see it and feel the noise. The shaft however will not rotate on the white shaft after the left (behind the glove box) is removed. There is another noise coming deep within....... could it be the one under the steering column or is there another culprit to investigate?
